Thanks for the video, very helpful. I did mine today on a 2010 XC60 with 84,000mi. Much to my surprise, the fluid was very clean, only slightly darker than new fluid. Having seen the fluid on vehicles a few years newer and with much fewer miles I was worried what I would pull out of there. I used an oil extractor which did take some time and I got out about 450ml, but it seemed like I was able to put in closer to 600ml. Overall not too difficult. Next step is Haldex service, I will do a refresher of your video on that service. Thank you for putting these videos together, you do a great service for the Volvo DIY community.
Just watched your angle gear video and you said you needed to extract 50 ml of fluid after filling the rear end. Just wanted to put that in the comments so others know to do it when they change their rear diff fluid. I can't believe how bad the fluid looks after only 34k miles! Gotta do this soon on our S80 AWD. Your videos are so helpful and your attention to detail is great! I love how well you care for your Volvos. Keep up the great work!
Can i use Lucas oil GL-5 SAE 80W axle oil for my 2012 Volvo XC70? Because the original oil i order is not the same it has a different part number and it does not specified if its the gl or sae
Is this the same process for the AWD S80? I have a V6 AWD 2007 and curious if this maintenance will benefit me! Thanks for the videos. Very interesting.
Great video. (I posted something similar on your angle gear videos so looks similar but a little different as ask specific question about angle gear vs rear gear) I’m looking to do this to my Volvo’s in the relatively near future. I've got a 2013 S60 T6 R-Design AWD and a 2015 XC60 T6 AWD. They both have the codes B6304T4 (Engine) and TF-80SC (transmission info). When watching your video on changing the angle gear fluid, you mention removing 50 ml in the rear gear as well. Do you know if extracting 50 ml is required for the rear axle gears in my vehicles as well? How did you figure that out as everyone I asked including 3rd party shops that work on Volvo’s don’t show a maintenance schedule so therefore have no info on how to change the fluid? I’m guessing that mine have the same angle gear as the one you show, but don’t really know. Also, removing 50 ml with a hose connected doesn’t account for amount of oil in the hose, so maybe should remove a little less I would guess. Better to be slightly overfull, then under full, right? Do you know if the rear gear is vented at the top? Was also wondering what made you settle on the mileage as to when to do it? Was it based on years? On a lot of maintenance schedules I’ve seen for rear gears on other brands of vehicles, I’ve read 80,000 km - 95 km (50K- 60K miles) or there about is fine, especially if synthetic oil was used which is what Volvo put in it. I'm also thinking about going with a Red Line gear oil that is an API GL 5+ 75W90 or 75W85. It's a high performance synthetic gear oil and I've run their oils in the past with great success. On something like this the most important thing is to put in an oil that meets the GL5 spec as long as it’s within range as for the weight of oil so I’ve always been told. I know for sure do not put in a GL4 spec oil as that is more for a lot of manual transmissions.
And once again your videos are amazing and greatly appreciated Specially for peops like me My cars since immigration S70 2000 Saab 93 vert Saab 95 2003 SW aero And vent back to Volvo xc70 03 S60 05 2.5T 07 S80 3.2 06 Xc90 v8 currently my Daily 10 Xc60 3.2 my wife’s Daily All of these in 7 years!!! Your videos save tons off money for men that have hands that grow from the right places!!)))
Thanks for your various Video tutorial on Volvo maintenance. You’re doing a great job.keep it up 👍 I’m regularly performing similar jobs and wanted to make a comment o rear differential oil replacement, purely based on my observations. I have done the exact same procedure on my own as well and friends Volvo XC60’s and to my surprise each time I have managed to extract anything between 650ml - 700ml fluid but to fill up the rear diff up to the oil inspection level it took 850ml - 900ml. Is this normal? Each XC60 I worked on hasn’t had any oil leaks from the diff and travelled approximately 150-200k kilometres. I’m wondering whether these cars are under filled in the factory by around 200ml. Food for thoughts…
Could you PLEASE check, for 06 xc70, how much fluid from each (rear, front, and haldex) should be removed at the very end of the corresponding procedures. Thank you!!
Yes, difference is big, but i like older one more. I dont no why? I dont like sou much electonic controller, but XC70 very nice family car. When did you upload some vidoes of Volvo 200?
Great video!! One question - Since you had the rear wheels on a ramp which means the car was not level do you think the oil you added was enough? Thanks again.
Do you still have your SX4 too? My 08 is still going but planning on replacing at some point with a Volvo station wagon. :) Thanks for your videos they are very helpful and detailed.
Hi there. I own S60 3.0 2013 with 172.000km on it. Don't know the service history for previous owners, so really afraid to change it ( I mean jerking problems or something ) Probably no one change it before, What do you think?
Great video. Do you need to remove any fluid once the diff is full to get the correct level? Also does the same procedure apply to 2014 XC90? Thanks from the UK!
rear differential 50ml extract .but i dont see him do that here.he mentions in his angle gear video change 50 ml should be extracted from rear and100 mlfrom angle gear to ge to correct levels
That would expand the fluid (which is why it gets thinner and easier to pump) causing your measurement of fluid coming out to be inaccurate with what you add later. I wouldn't do that.
Hello Again, I noticed in one of your other videos that you extract 50ml after filling the diff? is the essential as some other videos dont show the 50ml extraction, has volvo changed the procedure? Is it possibly due to oil expansion when oil gets hot as Volvo diff does not have a breather unlike a conventional differential? If you could advise that would be appreciated and I have done many jobs and mods from your other videos, all good and very informative, keep the videos coming, anyone with comments would be appreciated, Many Thanks
@@volvosweden Thank you, I can confirm I contacted two Volvo Main Dealerships today in the UK and Vida does show 50ml extraction, Thank you for all your Excellent videos and will keep watching 5Stars this helps us all :)
Thank you very much for the video! I do have one question. I have a drain plug on the differential that you were using to drain and fill....but I also have a drain plug on the other side of the driver side axle..about 9" forward of the drain plug you were using. What is that for? Does that share the same fluid?
@@volvosweden thank you. It is another drain plug. Has a copper ring and everything. I believe it's for the haldex and the "input shaft" for the differential.
Hi Guys, I'm planning to replace the rear axle/differential fluid on my 2011MY XC70 D5. Based on the VIDA it requires 1161620 (GL-5 80W) fluid which is discontinued since a while. The angle/bevel gear is requires 31259380 (GL-5 75W-90). Since the original 1161620 is discontinued the successor is the same as the angle gear oil - 31259380 which is a different viscosity oil. So basically I have two questions: - Is it possible to use oils from other companies with GL-5 80W-90 viscosity in the rear axle? (80w vs 80w-90) or - should I buy GL-5 75W-90 oil and use it both on angle and differential gears? To be honest I don't want to buy Volvo fluids if I can replace them with the same quality on the half price of the OEM fluids. Thank you for the help!
What did you end up buying? Im planning to change the diff oil too, but from what i read if single grade oil is required (80w) it's not advised to use multi grade (80w90 or other with 2 numbers) unless you shorten the change interval. But single grade is harder to find.
I prefer to keep the fluids at the same ambient temperature. Then you can be sure you put back what you took out. Granted the diff oil doesn't increase in volume like transmission fluid. Just my OCD won't let me.
I've got 2 Volvos with the same rear axle. On my S60 when I changed I also jacked the front end to make it more even. On my XC60 I'm about to do I've got to do something a little different as my jack isn't tall enough to reach the jack point, but I'm planning to try to level the best I can. Not sure how much less will go in with it being at an angle, so not sure if it's enough to make a big enough difference but I didn't want to take the chance.
@@volvosweden Haha! Better make sure she doesn't find out. From the look of that fluid, it might not be chocolate chips in the next batch of cookies if she does!
Mr. Murphy man idk. I grew balls to do my v8 awd and my fluid is like NEW Aaaaaaa. $$$$ time prep this that I open the plug and Haldex oil is like new!!!! Maybe cuz im in Fl ????
