In this video, I show two ways on how to replace a front left CV Axle on a 2007 Volvo S40 2.4i.
First: The common procedure to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
Second: The optional procedure to separate the strut from the steering knuckle.
Third (not shown): When the front of the car is lifted and the 2 front wheels are off the ground, a third way can be used to replace the CV axle.
Instead of disconnecting the sway bar link, the outer tie rod end can be removed from the steering knuckle.
Then the strut can be separated from the steering knuckle.
But, if the car is jacked up only on one side and the wheels on the opposite side of the car are on the ground, in that case the sway bar is pushed upwards.
Therefore the sway bar link is pulling the lower control arm and the knuckle in the upper position and it makes the work more difficult to retract the strut from the knuckle clevis attachment.
