Thanks to my day job at Kelley Blue Book, I drive and review lots of cars. Today I’m driving a 2019 Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design. Base price is $46,400, not including destination charges. The S60 is Volvo’s entry to the compact luxury sedan category, competing with cars like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. I’m not a luxury car buyer but if I were the Volvo S60 would rank high on my consideration list. That said, the version I drove in this video was the R-Design and I’m not sure it’d be the right choice for a family sedan.
Just to make sure, I brought my family along for the ride. My wife and daughter have thoughts but my issue with the R-Design is ride comfort, thanks to the R’s stiff sport suspension. Our car also happened to ride on 19-inch wheels, which didn’t help matters. Then again, we all agreed that the 2019 S60 R Design looks great inside and out. Plus, our test car is the S60 T6, whose turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine produces a robust 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Without a doubt the Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design delivers a good time. But am I getting too old for its rough riding ways? Naturally, a drive the aquarium reveals the answer.
And just so the premise is ultra-clear, this is not a comprehensive review but rather a casual look at the 2019 Volvo S60 T6 AWD R-Design, while I live my normal life. Simple. Fun! #MicahDrives

Another great video. Your family is adorable. Also glad you mentioned that the B&W stereo sounded nice. I’ve always wondered if these expensive stereo options are worth it. Reviewers focus so much on the driving aspects of the car, it would be nice to know more about the quality of the infotainment systems, including the audio systems.

Sorry for dropping that late, just discovered this channel. Anyway, indeed infotainment/multimedia are rarely mentioned in reviews. If you haven't checked, you could take a look at savagegeese - he has started doing some measuring on the sound systems as part of his reviews recently. Still - they are notnas relaxing and personal as this, nice job.

Test drove the 2019 S60 R-Design, but bought the Civic Type R. We have a 19 Outback 3.6 Touring. The R replaces our 2003 Odyssey. What a world.

Hey Micah, awesome video! I love how you include family duties with your videos instead of them just being stagnant, motor journalist videos like others usually are on RU-vid. One question related to the beginning gaffe with the peds in the blind spot, have you ever gotten in an accident with a press car? My worst nightmare is messing up a car when I’m test driving it! Bad Drivers of Montana Yes, I have been in an accident but it wasn’t my fault. A woman ran a red light and clipped the rear bumper of a BMW 3 Series diesel I was driving. Otherwise, smooth sailing!

As a Volvo purist, the R-design shit really infuriates. R should not mean Chrome/black mirror covers, “paddles” and all the other extra “lull lull” from the “we could but we don’t parts bin”. The R should be the top of the line, high performance, no bull shit, power house wagon like the 850 T5R, V70I R, V70n R or Polestar V60. And don’t you F*cking dare to put a real R badge on a R-design, that should carry a death penalty here in Sweden and the rest of the civilized world.

Funny how you mention the A-pillar blind spot. Nearly twenty years ago Volvo made a big driver visibility safety push with its Volvo's Safety Concept Car (SCC.) One of the main features of the concept car was see-through A-pillars: Through the use of transparent Plexiglas, the A-pillars were made partially transparent. And by using steel box construction, there was no loss of pillar strength. I guess they decided visibility was not all that important after all. Go figure.

Micah, I think you’d like the A4 better than the Volvo and Mercedes because of its quick/smooth dual clutch transmission and the linear power delivery of the 2.0T. It also has a nearly ideal balance between ride and handling. Beautiful family!

Great review, Micah! By the way- this S60 R-Design has the lowered sport chassis that is an option on the R-Design. If you forgo this option, it has the same suspension setup as the Momentum and Inscription trims.

Micah, as always, your reviews never disappoint. Most reviewers don't include their family. The picture angle is great showing your adorable daughter, Lil, in the back as well as your lovely wife. I liked how you showed how easy it is to install the carseat. Always important to see an occupied carseat in a car and how much foot space she has, considering she was behind the driver. Maybe you'll start "Lil's Backseat Reviews," which would include round buildings and how daddy drives. A positive point to having the backseat fold down buttons on the interior, is if someone in the backseat wants to access something in the trunk while the car is moving.

The Micah Drives I've patiently waited for, thank you Micah 😄. I'm really liking the all new Volvo S60, bummer about the hollow scratchy hard plastic on the console area. I'd think for $55k and a half that the quality would be better. However, I still really like the new S60 and Volvo overall because its esoteric like you said. I do wonder if the hollow sound would be present in the T6 Inscription trim model 🤔. You are a very cool 41 yr old to me Micah.

Great vid, as always and lucky family man. So who is the PSB fan? Loved them since I was in high school along with other great synth bands like New Order, Erasure, Yazoo and thr kings, Depeche Mode. I test drove the Volvo, really nice interior and styling but the steering (too video gamey) and acceleration (as you pointed out) were annoying. Test drove a bunch of other sedans before I chose the new 2018 Mazda6 Signature. A little larger, but incredibly well finished and enjoyable for ~20K less. IMO. Also curious as to how much more you get for your money comparing it to the new Mazda3.

I used to own a 2005 V50. We had the exact same problem with the A- pillar. Constantly had to move my head to make sure nothing was hiding.

The non-linear acceleration of the T6 engine would be very annoying. The T5 Volvo engine is better in that respect. Muzio family road trips are super-adorable, btw. Thanks as always for the Long Beach travelog. 😆😎👍

You can select the inscription model, the suspension will be more comfortable, both V60 and XC60 suits you. Bless your sweet family members.

I have seen a round building before, and I love Sweden. I especially like Sweden for their food, meatballs, and great furniture. The Muzio family in the market for a fast family sedan? You might’ve mentioned something similar in the Kia Stinger video as a possible liftback family hauler. I’ve known family and friends that chose even sportier/rougher, yet slower sedans like the Honda Civic Si, Acura TSX, Base C-class, Subaru Impreza WRX as their day to day family car (when you’re not visiting the grandparents to bring them to lunch and don’t need a three row). But then again, I can’t help be a bit jealous at times of my one friend who chose the marginally bigger Honda Accord V6 sedan, as the midsize passenger space and rear passenger air vents was always a godsend on long traffic-filled trips to the beach.

Can't resist this completely off-topic comment. I was in Moscow several years ago. Outside the city is a gigantic replica of several steel beam tank traps that mark the high water mark of the Nazi invasion in WWII. The Swedish connection? It sits next to the local Ikea parking lot. Says a lot about the introduction of capitalism to what was once the Soviet Union.

I really love this car. I have a 2011 Saab 9-5 so I like Swedish cars but this one has a clean look inside and for the price you can’t really beat it. A lot of the German and Japanese cars have too many buttons that it looks dated and cluttered. I was thinking of a Cadillac ct4 but looks like a Chevy Malibu w a fancy exterior shell.

C C I love the look and space is the V60. It’d be my choice...though the lockable storage of a trunk would be nice since I often drag around a pile of GoPros with me. Regarding on-screen climate controls they work just fine for me. With automatic climate control, after setting the temperature, I rarely need to adjust the system. No complaints here!

I just test drove one of these last week. I think the 4 cylinder sounded like what a 4 cylinder would sound like and I don’t mean that in a good way. I also found every bump to rattle the entire car as my whole body bounced around due to moderate potholes. On the plus side I found the interior tasteful and thoroughly modern. The verdict? For $50k plus there’s better options out there.

My previous generation S60 T6 has the non-linear acceleration. I much prefer the T5 with Polestar chip in my other Volvo. It’s smoother and has better drivability.

There was a dynamic mode. It's like sport. For volvo. You gave analysis of a car that you didn't even drive-in sport. Or in this case dynamic mode. And you're in an S60.

That "technical weave" is known as carbon fiber or possibly in this case, simulated carbon fiber. Hold on, DH replied to me below and I totally missed that I was looking at a quick close up of the metal trim. So then, let's just call it technical weave. LOL Another great video, Micah. Always fun to ride along with the fam.

@@theMLBfan You're right. I did not realize how tight that shot was. Now I can see that it is like an etched weave in the metallic trim. I have actually seen some carbon fiber trim in a Volvo, but your are correct this is not it and it is not an option on this vehicle.

Dulnyavka Ooh. Good question. Turbochargers and superchargers perform the exact same function. They’re essentially fans that pump air into an engine. More air (plus more fuel) means more power. The key difference is what makes them spin. A supercharger is spun by a belt attached to the engine. A turbocharger is spun by a separate fan (compressor) that is driven by the vehicle’s exhaust. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages.

So here's a request, RU-vid is full of car buying tips and negotiating tips, but none from you. I would welcome some practical advice from someone with your experience and sense of humor. Bottom line, so far as I'm concerned, when you go in to buy a new or used car you're just outgunned by people who train obsessively day and night to rip you off. volvo has become very disappointing, since its handover to geely, it only has one engine choice or all their models, only manipulate the power output through turbochargers and superchargers, a perfect recipe for disastrous reliability
