Another rough video of me replacing my Volvo XC60 Thermo fan. The fan had been staying on and flattening the battery before finally not working at all. After trying a replacement control unit, I eventually had to replace the entire housing wth new fans and controller. I did this outside on a rainy day, so that's the water splashes under the bonnet you can see. I'm also in Australia

Getting that fan back in is a tough one!! Definitely want two people, and get that module off for that... Thanks for the video

Hey Joe, yeah as you can see, I lost a bit of bark off my hands getting it back in. I managed myself ok, it just tested my patience. The module certainly needs to come off. Well done if you've completed this. Thanks for the comment mate.

The old lady and I just finished the install on the fan assembly. It was a bit of a pain in backside but by God we got her in there.

Removing the one screw for the transmission cooler, the clips on top like you showed, and removing the air filter box worked best for me.

Thanks for the feedback, hope it helps someone. It’s certainly tight. Was yours the T6 as well?

Hi James, I had the same problem and bought the control unit from ebay which I knew was the problem but it didn't work. Volvo use to sell them separate but take you for a ride by selling the whole assembly. I had no choice and also bought the complete unit.

@@51kfk38 Still perfect mate, all good. I should have done this in the first place rather than chase the controller options. Just waiting for the next 'project' to pop up.

Awesome video. I bought the cooling module first and it didn’t fix my problem with the fans only coming on when starting the car. AC works great driving but idle it gets very warm and the engine gets very hot at idle too. What software are you using to monitor the temperatures on your PC? Thanks for the help. Debating tackling this myself or letting the shop install the part for around $1200 installed with labor.

Sounds like you have the same issue. I'm using VIDA software, running on a virtual machine and a DICE diagnostic usint (from ebay). It's a bit tricky to get set up, but been great for home diagnostics. The swap out/in job is very fiddly, as it's all very tight. My part cost $1200AUD alone, so you seem to have an OK price to have fitted as well (if USD). So long as that is including a proper Volvo part and not a 3rd party one, as if it were me I'd go original with all the muck about I've had with mine. FYI, mine is still running well. Latest project is new battery time!

@@jamessaunders6439 Thank you. Yes, it is a genuine Volvo part with dual fan and control module. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Fingers crossed the replacement works for another 170k miles! ;)

I seem to have run into the same problem and will probably just get the whole unit.

I would recommend it if you want it to last. I wish I had gone that way from the start, but pretty expensive.

Hi. No, it is one of the few parts that just plug and play. No updates or software required. It should just work. Did you use an original Volvo part?

I have 2011 XC60 and ran into the same problem. I decided to let the dealership fix it bc I don’t know how to work on cars. The part cost $600

Hi Ebony. Glad they fixed it for you. Was it a Volvo dealership and was that $600 USD? Mine cost $1200 AUD for the original Volvo part where I am.
