Volvo XC60 blower fan fix _without_ removing entire dash

This is a video on how I fixed, and swapped out the circulation fan, or blower fan for my 2010 Volvo XC60. When these blowers go, they make annoying squeaking sounds at certain speeds, and unless you can live with it, the blower needs to be swapped out.
Watch these other videos before doing this method - you will learn pointers such as putting the fan into "recirc" mode, and CEM removal etc. Great help for how to disassemble parts of the car interior, as well as some watch outs, and the second link is a great alternate way to do this operation. Again YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE DASH. Stop with that silliness ;-)

• 2011 Volvo XC60 Blower...
Special thanks to Duke Motors in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada for the method I used.
Good luck! ;-)

All European cars suffer from the squeaky fan curse. I had a 2005 E320 that squeaked at low speed. I took it out, blew all the dust out of it and lubed the bearing shaft. It did the job for a while. Ended up replacing both the fan and resistor. Made a world of difference

Thank you for your video! I just did this job with your video along with some others and had to express my appreciation, did it just before the -12 weather(I'm in Toronto as well) and couldn't be happier, all your detail is much appreciated and I resorted to your method with the hole and then siliconed it all back up. You're a good guy!!! lol thanks

Wish I could say I was clever enough to come up with that strategy on my own, but it was actually a Volvo mechanic who saw my pleas for help on a Facebook group and was kind enough to walk me through it by video chat. It is a little tricky, and I did guide the bar into the position with my fingers blindly from the passenger side. Shining a flashlight from the blower area showed my assistant where to aim. Hopefully my afterthought of a video helped some people! Wonder why my method didn't work for you!

That was (is) brilliant! I'm thinking one could make a sealed door instead a silicone 'explant', just in case of future fan replacements. I keep seeing Behr parts in repair videos for Volvo. Here it is again. Grateful to know I can save a bundle on parts and still get good quality.

I've got an xc70, but watched just for the fun of it. As for the common 'squeak', my method of repair has been to just run the fan slightly faster or slower so the squeak dissappears. The point is that it should re-center the squirrel cage onto what is likely just a nylon bushing, and eventually make it totally go away. In fact, i think my noise is completely gone now from doing this. Cheers 🍻 👏 ☮️

Thanks a lot for the video! I took the cowl cover off to make some parts of the work easier. I got the confidence from your video! I am going to give Falasa's idea a shot. If that doesn't work I will take the drilling route. Suggestion to others: To remove the wiper blade I used a puller (not the special tool that Volvo suggested but something similar). It's faster that way.
@MrRichardRolando
@MrRichardRolando 3 года назад
Awesome - guaranteed you'll get it either/both way ;-) For the wiper arms you really don't need a puller - just push/pump on it with your hand like in the video - it'll pop off as it works its way up the axle.

In my world necessity is the mother of all inventions. In the cross country Volvo wagon, they removed the access to change the fuel pump, you have to drop the whole rear sub frame plus the gas tank. No way Jose, visit Junk Yard Make some cuts and create a template and make your own access from above just like any other Volvo. Great video, it just makes you wonder if the engineers do some stuff just for service profit. The best rule is always the KISS rule: Keep Simple Stupid!

Thanks for the tip. It might just be less design work on their part to make the access spot. They were technically working for Ford at the time. Be Awesome if someone could make a video similar to this one to cutting a fuel pump access into a P3 XC70....

Success Ijust have replaced blower fan motor on volvo xc60 strait six twin turbo 2011. I did impossible. I cut wall and insolation to come to motor.The trick is press clip on motor and tap on housing in same time to rotate fan to realese. Is not enough to push lock tab down also in same time you have to push up clip on motor. You have to jam flat large screw driver between clip and realease tab,such way that clip is going up on motor and realease tab on housing going down. Is not enough to press tab down by fingers.So to unhook connector on blower motor you have to push it out half way than is enough room to unplug it.Same thing when installing new one .Also when you lock new fan,.lift locking tab up with screw driver.to secure it.Thank you !

Thanks for the video it is very helpful but i have a question. You didn’t have a screw on the backside of the fan?
@MrRichardRolando
@MrRichardRolando Год назад
Strange thing is I believe none of the xc60s had that screw inserted.I know which one you are talking about. It is _supposed_ to be there as added security to hold the cage onto the frame, but neither me nor my mechanics who has replaced quite a few have seen that screw on the xc60. I know it was on the xc70s.

@@MrRichardRolandothank you for your swift reply, you may have saved me from drilling through the firewall to access it. I’ll try to access the tab as you suggested and if i can’t I’ll try @mfalasa’s method. Got my vids confused 🤦🏽‍♂️. One guy said he got to the tab from the passenger side. @mfalasa removed the cluster and stuck a thin flat bar through the venting and accessed the tab that way. I already removed it so it’s worth a try before drilling.

As cronom1 asked Richard, could the whole job be done by removing speedometer cluster, cowling, wiper assembly and then drilling the access port as you did?
@MrRichardRolando
@MrRichardRolando Год назад
Sorry for the late replies all - been busy. Hey Micheal - the speedometer cluster removal will work with the 70, not the 60 - for some strange reason the vent piping is different. So on the 70 you would not need to drill through the engine wall as you can access the tab release. Either way that glovebox and everything in the passenger footwell is coming out LOL

I would use a strong tape to tape the small hole. There's already a large square hole on the left. I don't think a small hole on the right will make a huge difference. What if you need to change the fan again? The silicone is a pain the remove.
@MrRichardRolando
@MrRichardRolando Год назад
Silicone isn't that hard to remove - plus added moisture protection makes it worth it. Cheers! 🙂

Will i be able to get the driver's side screw out through the cut hole? I got to the point where i removed the recirculation housing and passed my borescope over the blower to the driver's side to verify i do have that screw installed. What size hole saw did you use?
@MrRichardRolando
@MrRichardRolando 7 месяцев назад
At 3:30 ;-) 2.5" hole saw. If you mean the screw that apparently holds the two sides of the plastic cage together that is tucked away on the diagrams? Strangely no one that did this method (or any other) had to remove that screw because there isn't one (?) On mine there was a set hole with threads on other side, but no screw in it. My mechanic said they never had to remove one either - so the thought is that they never installed one from the factory for the XC60s? SO you say you _do_ have a screw there?

Just throwing it out there. For all that massive headache and work, why not go to FCP euro and get a continental/VDO (one of a couple oems that Volvo uses) for maybe $15 more? Or hell even just get OE at the dealer. Sure it's a couple hundred bucks more but do you really want to do this job again in the next 10 years?

Hey David - the replacement I ordered is "Made in Germany", so no low-quality part ;-) It'll last 10 years easily... which is longer than I may have this one... unless I decide to take it to 378,000K, like I did my v50 ;-)

"IF" you buy _just_ the fan alone from Volvo, it's $465 Canadian ($95 after market from quality vendor). Then labour on top... dealers can range from $1200 all the way up to $1900. Which is nuts. If you are even remotely handy, and have an afternoon to dedicate to it, this is the way to go ;-)

Drilling into the car?? No way i will ever do that. I just took the dash out. It's not that hard. Took me about 8h to complete the job on my V60 (and i never did it and had to find my way to find all the mountingpoints). Once you can pull the dash to the front, you can reach the screw and remove it. Just be a bit carefull. I think if i have to do it a second time, i will be able to do it in 4h. I just lost so much time to find the one screw of the dash to release it, and that screw was hidden behind the blower tube where the gauges are. You have to bend the blowertube and there was one screw hidden. The rest was pretty common.
