Nice system. Very different from the system at GM where they work at higher speeds like in the new Buick Encore and Cadillac ATS. They just warn the individual of an impending collision, or going out of lane, at speeds in the neighborhood of 35 mph or faster to warn the driver of a potential accident. Not sure which one is more effective or better, but I bet they are both useful to a degree.
The auto industries have used technologies from aircraft Traffic Collision Avoiding Systems (TCAS) systems. It is very hard to avoid the forward and/or front collision because most of the times there are cars around you.
Radar and FLIR or GTFO. And I kinda like Volvo for everything it's done for safety over the years. But in this day and age, even back in 2011 when this was uploaded, Radar assisted controls and FLIR camera systems for avoiding night time hazards, are so much better and not affected by rain like this system. And as Jeremy Clarkson off Top Gear pointed out, it's also really good at finding PAPs in the Bushes, LOL. (PAPs = Paparazzi)
I am wondering how well these systems will function once the car is 20 years old? Also, if the system will ever act up and just randomly brake for things that aren't even there???
These systems are now about 16 years old (launched in 2008), and there are no reports of the system randomly activating brakes etc. So I think we're safe 😉 Usually Volvo know what they're doing when it comes to safety systems.
Thank goodness for an off switch on this system. There are several other manufacturers putting these systems in cars. The solution to those people who have no business being behind the wheel is not any high tech electronic gadget. It's a simple innovation called the "passenger seat." I do not need a computer taking over driving in my car. No thank you.
My lease is up on this car. Very nice. Average mileage. I only had city safety go off once and it was for no reason. Software bug. i was less than pleased. Lucky nobody was behind me. Other than that once incident the car was great. I would highly recommend it to anyone. I am staying with with volvo. XC90 next. No city safety or adaptive cruise control in the 90 though. duh. Way cheaper to buy though now though.
looks like the argument from the Mini car makers, it was a very dangerous car in an accident, and when questioned about this flaw, then just replyed that they had good engines, nice brakes etc and if the person had an accident, it was their own damn fault, problem is sometimes you can be paying attention and another car comes at you, you can control your car but not everybody elses , thats the problem
You're missing the point. They talked about their innovations and how they've caught on, like the 3 point safety belt, so in the future, this feature will be on every car, so that won't be a problem.
You idiot. This ystem would be useless if it worked as planned Then again; it doesn't work as planned. All cars would be a lot more expensive by including all of these useless safety features. I just want a cheap car that drives pretty well, for safety I have eyes and a seat belt.

For anything from the side, including pedestrians or kids, your eyes should have seen that seconds before technology will...In the video they even tell you that it ignores anything from the side.
Same thing when a human slams on the brakes. Are you implying that this is a issue or concern? All drivers, including the ones behind the Volo or rapidly braking person, should be paying attention to the road and respond accordingly. In most scenarios you can see whats happening ahead of a vehicle as long as you are paying attention.

nobody's perfect...not even you! it doesn't take control of the vehicle out of your hands...it helps when something beyond a drivers control. ever seen someone pass out while driving, I have twice...as I drive over 700 miles a week. relax mr. perfection.
yhe but what they dont say is the acident that hapend when showing the xc60 to some news ppl that wer siting in it they tested the stop feature whit a truck in front of them ofc the system faild and they smashed right into the truck ass
but this technology i guess is pretty expensive...so, in the future, we cannot expect this feature to be on all cars soon...maybe after 5 to 6 years...
In my opinion all this technology makes the driver from today, which never has time while driving from A to B, be less concentrated and more self concsious about the vehicle. I never would like to drive a vehicle from which I know it could brake automatically. Maybe the government should rather do idiot-tests with people who want to drive, that might help decreasing the road accidents

something sounds fishy about this entire thing. Volvo claims that it uses a radar to detect objects and pedestrians. however all radar I have worked with or researched can only see steel or some form of a metal object. and to add insult to injury there is a video of another Volvo with this feature ramming a man who wanted to test this feature. in all honesty it pays to put the phone down or stop whatever your doing and pay attention
First up, what are you doing stuck on a railway crossing? You only go on to the tracks if the exit is clear. If the car breaks down on a crossing, that's nothing to do with the safety system, is it? Second, the advice is to get out of the damn car.

It would be a lot easier to have a robot-arm in the car that slaps people in the face when they are not paying attention....hard This type of automation gives people an excuse to do something else than driving...

I will probably never understand why such assistance systems are developed only for partial braking, depending on the speed. This is defective by design, absolutely irrational. People who are afraid of emergency braking should never get into a car, especially not as a driver because this is a basic driving skill.
