Voronoi Texture Cabinet Design - From rough sawn lumber to dovetailed drawers and a cabinet

Hey woodworkers! This is a small cabinet that I designed explicitly to fit under my CNC machine. I wanted to do a crazy texture on the drawer fronts, and settled on this voronoi texture design which I created in Blender. The wood to make this was all "free" from my property, which means it is a softwood fir and pine (that's mostly what we have in the Lake Tahoe area of California). After the front was designed in Blender, I imported the STL into Fusion 360 to generate all the toolpaths. The cabinet itself was designed in Fusion, along with the dovetailed drawers. I used my vertical work table on the Avid CNC to cut the dovetails. This is mostly a CNC woodworking project. Feel free to download a copy of the files and make something similar!

fantastic video. i loved all the CNC usage. the clever offset juggling when jointing the rough face of the drawer fronts was extremely cool.

Thanks! I'm going to do a video all about offsets at some point.

Absolutely killing it! Love the video and the cabinet. I am also learning fusion 360 and trying my best with my little Onefinity CNC. I would really like to see more in depth videos on your work using fusion and your whole process of going from design, tool path creation and execution. Really liked the vertical milled dovetail setup. So slick.

Thanks! Onefinity makes some good looking machines - I wish I had ballscrew accuracy! I did some videos a while back doing a design in Fusion 360 from concept to machining; it didn't seem very popular, so I haven't done it again, but I'll look into doing it again. I've come to realize way more people use Vectric VCarve than Fusion; maybe I should do some tutorials that make Fusion for CNC woodworkers easier. Fusion is way more powerful than anything else out there, so keep up with learning it!

Nice work! I wonder what those drawer fronts would look like with a veneer’d material- almost like a topo map. Thank for sharing!

Thanks Justin! Yeah, it would be cool with some high quality plywood - there's some guy here in Truckee selling some CNC'ed lake designs with that style. They look pretty slick.

Neat drawers! What is a ‘snipe’? Not a term I have heard in this context before.
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Ryan! Snipe is the end of a board being a little thinner. It happens when running wood through a planer. Right at the end of running a board through, the tension rollers release tension on one the front side, causing the board to lift up slightly, and the planer takes a larger cut. It leaves the end of a board slightly thinner than the rest of the board.

Nice idea for the drawer fronts, and what Hendges do you like, I have used the big box store type and not real impressed with them also.

I'm a big fan of anything by Blum. Their under mount drawer hardware is super awesome; I used it on my kitchen cabinets at my old house. They make good door hinges too; they have the ability to tweak the position to make good consistent gaps.

Very nice! Your cnc has nicer furniture under it than many rooms in my house 😂 Would love to learn more about your spray process sometime. Why oil the drawers instead of shellac?
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 6 месяцев назад
Oh yeah, our house furniture is terrible! This was an excuse to practice some new ideas. I have a video about spraying my kitchen cabinets: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ucHLgKUxigI.htmlsi=yvlduIXsSq_mE0yY -- I basically did the same thing here, but I didn't do any staining, and just went straight with the finish. I wanted to avoid the yellow/amber tinting that a lot of finishes would leave on pine. This was half a can of finish that has been sitting for four+ years, and still was fine! I used oil (specifically, boiled linseed oil), because I never use it, and I don't really like it. I just wanted to use it up a bit. I generally prefer to spray the drawers, and use a harder drawer material like maple.

I am baffled as to why your jointer is taking too much off compared to cnc. I use my cnc to square stock all the time especially oversized brisket boards. Can you explain more why cnc is a lighter cut?
@CorbinDunn
@CorbinDunn 4 месяца назад
It's for pieces that have twist; I can shim up each side of the twist and machine the top without losing too much material. On the jointer, you have to hold some part flat, which is picking one of the twisted ends, and then jointing it flat to that side. This ends up taking off more material. If I have time, I'll draw a picture to illustrate. For non-twisted boards, I just find it works more consistent for me, as I never really got very good at face jointing a board.
