I can believe how clean this engine is. No rust or signs of age. Must of been garaged for its entire life. This makes this job so much easier.

Dude, I just did a head job on my 1999 k1500 Suburban and there was one wiring harness that I couldn't find where it terminated. It was the round plug that goes in the back of the compressor. Five minutes into the video and you showed me where it went. I appreciate it sir! Hopefully I'll be firing it up tonight.

Done a fair amount of shade tree years ago but this video inspired me to go for it. Had job done over the weekend probably saved me $700 to $1k. So handy that you mention what tool and what size. Best of all this repair was on "she who must be obeyed's" vehicle. Now I am the hero!

On the distributor you want to take an automatic center punch and punch mark the manifold and post close together, and you're done with timing. No resetting unless you replace. you'll be within a 1/10 degree

Use the felpro "permaseal" intake gasket kit to never have another leak. The factory astic intake gasket is junk and prone to failure. The felpro is a rubber overlay on a steel gasket

... excellent video and very relevant to the issue I'm having with my (Canadian production?) 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe 1500 LT SUV w. 5.7L Vortec engine ... intake manifold is very probably leaking coolant (likely at rear, adjacent to cyl.'s 7 and / or 8) into my crankcase and contaminating my engine oil ... truck may have had DEX-COOL in it when I bought it in 2004, however, that has long since been flushed out and re-filled with good ol' green extended life antifreeze / coolant concentrate (I go with a 70/30 mix, a/f to water) from Lordco ... FYI, I once overheated this truck pulling a 3,500 lb. boat & trailer up the Coquihalla Hwy. and had to install a new (plastic tanked!) radiator ... that o/h event may have also compromised the intake manifold gaskets ... Will, I don't suppose you're located anywhere near Vancouver, Canada? ... if you are, I could easily deliver this SUV to you for said work ... familiarity is everything and I'm convinced you could do this job in your sleep ... Thanks for this! Just did this job last weekend and while it took several hours in total, really wasn't that bad. Used the MS98000T's, which have the metal rings in them as you mentioned in the above video. Downside for me was this was an Express van, so had to discharge the AC system due to metal suction pipe. Thanks again!

Thanks a lot for the video. Game me the courage i needed to undertake this job on my 97 Savana. Took a lot longer than my initial estimate yet it was worth it. I think access issues with these vans makes it little tougher. I also had chance to change serpentile belt and the tentioner.

Thanks for a great tutorial on the lower intake gasket R&R, just finished doing the job on my 1999 Suburban, been chasing a llitte bumble\stumble at idle that was only there after it left open loop, lower intake gaskets were collapsing on the tops of the runners.. Felpro to the rescue! SAD SAD list of repairs going after this rough idle, Spider injection, coil, ignition module, crank sensor, plugs wires cap rotor, new distributor, funny thing is with a clean cap it would run smooth for a day, then it would idle rough again, clean the cap and it would go away for a day max then return. No codes, lower intake gaskets for the win!

next inline is the drop machine now this has many options, however lets say we have a 2000 count bar in place ever every so many seconds it deposits 2000 drops on a belt that then goes through a cooling tunnel, when discharge then goes through all the packaging equipment, from the box erector, bag inserter, filling station, box sealer, running at pretty high speeds, i have been manly setting up the packaging equipment, pretty much where all the mechanical and logic become one hope that helps

Excellent video. I will take issue with the Dexcool thing, though. I've replaced hundreds (if not thousands) of TBI 5.7/5.0 intake gaskets that predate dex coolant. It is my opinion that the problem is more with the crappy nylon backed gaskets rather than the coolant (not to mention lack of maintenance by their owners). Every 5.7 I've fixed with the second design metal backed gasket had no issues even with Dex. Super crappy design either way, with only 4 bolts holding the lower intake on.

Hi Will, first of all, thanks for the great video and instructions! I can't afford to have this job done so I am going to attempt it myself; even though this will be the biggest auto/engine task that I have ever attempted, by far! I NEVER could have even considered doing this job without a great instructional video like this. Anyways, I am curious as to what all I might as well replace - as in valves, sensors, seals, etc. - while I'm elbows deep into the engine?

Understandable each to their own, like I mentioned just my opinion, the hardest part to swallow is lol I shouldn't say swallow and antifreeze in the same sentence, seeing all the issues first hand correlating to complaints filed, lawsuits directed at dexcool more than any other (search it will blow your mind) I chose not to take any more chances yrs ago and stopped recommending, however im not no chemistry expert and still use what the customers prefers, wouldn't use it in my truck just saying
@robinsonsauto

so my main experience with PLC's is using to help trouble shoot along with schematics its nice to bring up logic and see real fast whats stopping what, oh hey this down stream prox sensor thinks it is made stopping the line, failed high, things like that most times i can resolve without however its nice to know, also work along with the programmers during setup, or if a card fails replace it, where i do get into programming is VFD's and such,

That was a almost a great. Video. 8.5. Some people like me yould like to see the things that you thoubht would bore but the vaccume lines is why i needed to see how the were run from passenger side to driver side. I did learn alot but u need to assume the homeowner knows nothing and needs to see every move u make its very intimidating for uour basic homeowner to tackle a job like that. But for a shade tree mechanic. Would probably be perfect. Keep the videos coming

Did the intalke leak water into the engine? I have one that did that. Having a hell of a time getting to run right now. I think there is some water trapped in lifters. I was thinking about draining oil, unplugging coil wire to HEI distributor, and cranking engine over a little while with no oil and no heat to ignition. My intentions - purge lifters of any water that got in there. Do you think this could help with my problem? Thanks.

You said you hooked it up to computer to "further adjust the distributor". I was on the road dead, towed into a small shop, received my second distributor in 20,000 miles...wife drove it home with a new noticeable miss. I have been chasing this miss...,to no avail and here because the valve is tapping and thought maybe the annoying miss is that or possibly an internal intake leak. Thoughts?

Hey thanks for this video only reason I felt I could do this job. everything went well only had a ft lb torq wrench small amount it did was 10lb so I hand tighten the intak then a little tighter then to the final torq. when I turned my tuck off after warming it up coolent came from somewhere right above the lower radiator hose where it connects to the engine. I don't believe it was the lower hose but something above it

I know where you are coming from. Plus, Dexcool is a bit more expensive than green coolant. A lot of my time spent in the business was at various GM dealers from 1998 to 2008, so it was pretty important to them to make sure things stayed 100% factory. Another secret motivation for using Dex in my personal vehicles is that I've got quite a stockpile of Dex (and a lot of other GM branded fluids) from the last job I left in the form of an unauthorized severance package

Long shot but I have a coolant leak on my 98 gmc sierra. Can’t really see where it’s coming from but when the truck is running leak is first visible in the area where the front part of egr tube is connected it runs like right underneath it (fitting and tube are dry so the leak isn’t there) once I turn the engine off the coolant sort of sits there and then little section to between the fitting connection and the manifold. Is like a little cave. Would you have an idea of maybe what components to look for that can be leaking around the area. T.i.A

If I was to replace both the lower and upper intake manifold gaskets would it be safe to assume I follow this video first up until I remove the lower intake assembly (which includes the upper intake?). Then once the lower assembly is removed I then take the upper intake off of that whole unit to replace that gasket and then I proceed to re-install the whole intake? I've seen separate videos's on how to do just the upper gasket but none that cover both. I would think most people change upper and lower at the same time? appreciate any guidance on this- I'm pretty sure I'm blowing antifreeze from both top and bottom......

Ive got 505,000km on my '98 Sierra (310,000mi) As the 2nd owner I know its never had the dreaded intake gasket problem. I wonder, if its because the DexCool was flushed in my truck regularly every 24 months? (the previous owner followed the Heavy Service schedule in the manual) I know theres a majority of DexCool haters out there but theyre fixing engines that have probably never had a coolant flush done in the vehicles lifetime, and they dont know the history of whats been dumped in the rad.

I had a gm dealership work on a different issue and when he gave me my tahoe back, it was broken off, schrader valve and all. the metal was torn and he denied doing anything. Also human interfaces for example the said packaging equipment, timers and moving parts, we run different box sizes that require changes in the program, example i would hate to put 50lbs in a 25lb box or a 25lbs box fills faster the transfer time is faster than on a 50lb if that timer isnt changed you may start transferring the box out of position before its full oops, during the initial set up i created different recipes for each box ran, therefor operator selects box size and off we go
