I like that term 'Modular Sporting Rifle', a perfect use of the proper nomenclature. Many call ARs Modern Sporting Rifles, but they are no longer so modern at about 60 years old, but they are indeed very modular, which is the beauty of the AR platform. A very realistic description.
There's been very little improvement in gas operated semi-automatics beyond the MSR platform that could warrant dropping the "modern" classification. Sure, there's lots of other variants, but, IMHO, none that would take the top of the heap claiming the Stoner design is "outdated" and no longer current... Just a thought, not criticism, mind you. (>;
AR type rifles are much more modern then the bolt or lever action rifle since those designs are over 100 years Old. With the Picatinny rails and all of the changes made since the sixty’s, they are modern sporting rifles.
GREAT video ......I realized WHILE watching that I had my AR-15 Vortex 1-4 PST mounted to far forward with the front of my cantilever on the rail .........THANKS MUCH......and thanks to for the GREAT service I've received from you folks ....ALL of my optics are Vortex. The QUALITY, SERVICE and WARRANTY keep me coming back .......
Just bought tikka t3x in 270 win 2 months wasn't sure on optics but after watching videos and the werrenty is the best in the industry I went with vortex and will always use vortex because of that and the glass is crystal clear thays vortex for all you do
@@VortexOpticsUSA Question, I Just purchased a Ruger precision rifle in 308 and a Vortex Diamondback Tactical First Focal Plane MOA. 6 x 24 x 50mm. I purchased the Pro series 30 mm rings "Height High" and I'm hoping that the scope will fit with these rings and fit the rifle (mainly the height) this was kind of a guess on my part. Thoughts ?
@@VortexOpticsUSA Thank you for your fast response. This is my first Vortex Scope & my first "first focal plane scope" I've always purchased cheap scopes. But this time. I really wanted a nice one. The name brand Vortex came up everywhere. Top ten lists, you tube vids, etc.. Your ratings on Amazon are unbelievable. Finally, after I read your warranty, it was a done deal. Thanks again. :)
Just bought my Mauser M18, I have a dozen guns all iron sights no red dots or holographic (cause my eyes) and this video helped calm my nerves about what I need and how to do it. Very good video! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video... After my first Vortex purchase of a Red Dot, then dealing with their customer service and its excellent staff, Im now the happy owner 2 Red Dots, 2 'pieces of glass' and a Range Finder... and couldn't be happier. Now that a new PRS rifle has arrived, what to mount it with... SO MANY choices, but once I decide, I'll be giving you guys a call to "talk shop". Look forward to it. Take Care and Happy shooting
Absolutely! We appreciate all of the support and if you need any recommendations for your new rig, don't hesitate to reach out. Thanks for being a part of Vortex Nation :)
Good stuff! On the reversing the mount to bring the scope to you, one common issue with that is that the charging handle is right under the scope tail and it be hard to grab to pull back, on ARs anyways, some other rifles with different styles might not have that issue.
I’ve been looking into the Burris P.E.P.R. Scope mount as a way to mount a red-dot above an AR10 rifle for close-up target acquisition. Is this mount a decent choice, or should I hold off for something more “quality”? My thought process is using this rifle for hog hunting, where the primary optic would be a scope at minimum 2.5x10, and that the red dot would be for the hopefully-rare instance of a close-up charging hog.
The german Vortex website tells me that the Vortex Precision Matched Rings can be mounted on a Picantinny-rail but not on a Weaver-rail. The Ruger American Predator has a Weaver-rail but you mounted the Vortex Precision Matched Rings on it. Can you please explain why your german collegues don't recommand that?
yea - watching vortex podcast too much along with meat eater i found myself in a bass pro shop today wanting a new scope and i went straight to the vortex section. Long story short i own a vortex now! i 100 percent do not regret my purchase
I just purchased a Savage Axis 2 Overwatch 308 bolt action. I have ordered the Vortex Diamondback DBK-10027. The rifle came with an EGW one piece picatinny scope rail. What would your recommendations be for rings to mount the scope?
Kind of late to the party but anyway, I've got a savage access to precision rifle. What ring height would you suggest? I have several options at my house. Just curious thanks, Jerry.
I’ve got my first AR on its way, to which I will mount my Strikefire in a cantilever mount that’s currently quad mounted on my AK. I have ordered the new crossfire red dot for my AK. I’m excited to get to do a review on such a new optic on my channel.
So I spent the money on the big dog. Razor HD GEN II. I am mounting it on a Rem 700 308 tac. I got a Warne zero MOA rail. I have the vortex 1.10 rings headed my way. After looking at how big this is. I’m worried that my rings are going to be to short. My stalk is a archangel with some adjustment. It’s kind of a bummer spending this kind of money and you just can’t go to the local sporting goods store and get what you need.
The 1.1" inch height should provide enough clearance for that setup. If your stock does have adjustment, if you run into any issues you can always jump up to the 1.26" inch height, but you should be just fine with what you have!
Excellent video! My current dilemma: A Henry All-Weather 30-30 with Picatinny rail. Yes, a lever gun. how to mount a 30mm scope while being able to still access the hammer....??
I bought a viper PST gen one and I’m putting it on a 20 MOA rail. I know the objective is 50 mm and so that leads me to think I need to go high rings but I’d rather use medium if I can. What do you recommend?
Excellent! For Tikka T3x there should be a pin that acts as a recoil lug on the base (Tikka/Sako optiloc system). I like Mountain Tactical Picatinny Rail that incorporates that strong recoil pin on their base.
Hi Vortex Team. I purchased a Tikka T3X CTR that comes with 0MOA rail standard. Planning to purchase the Strike Eagle 5-25x56 scope. Which rings must I get to clear the ocular lens bell? I’m keeping the 0MOA standard rail for now as I don’t plan to shoot further than 1000m for now.
What is best position of the rings if the cross-bar doesn't exactly fit the picatinny slot? Toward the back of the pic or toward the front? I would think toward the back, since they sort-of act like a recoil lug for the scope helping eliminate the movement potential of the scope when firing heavy loads like 300 winmag.
The most typical and problematic concern is a scope height which will support a muscularly relaxed stockweld where the entire weight of head can rest on the stock while yielding perfect sight alignment. Unless this condition is achieved consistent sight alignment will not be possible resulting in angular error which increases with distance.
I purchased a DBK-RIM 2-7 x35 Rimfire V-plex Vortex Diamondback riflescope. I would like to mount it on to my .22 bolt action Marlin Glenfield Model 25. What rings would you suggest?
Bergara HMR, just ordered a Viper PST G2, which rings should I use? Should I use locktite on the rings? Or some other thread locker? I assume they don't need lapped. Any input would be appreciated, I'm new to this.
It frustrates the he'll out of me that modern plastic stocks don't come with plastic adjustable cheek pieces! Very few come with a comb high enough (and I've never found one too high). On a wooden gun I'd rather the comb be too high so I could take the excess off myself and re-oil/revarnish. If you want an integrated cheek piece you basically have to go to a chassis. Very frustrating.
Great video. Very informative. I just bought a Remington 700 26 inch barrel in 300 Win Mag. I have little to no long distance shooting experience but that is the goal behind buying this rifle. I would start with just long distance targets until I got confident enough to hunt long distance without risk of injuring an animal that I do not kill. I am thinking I want a scope with a high magnification around 20 but anything up to 25+ would work and no less than 16 power. I would like to keep the price around $700 for the scope, rings and mounting plate but willing to go a little higher if there is a scope that will better serve my purpose. Any set up(s) you can suggest? I see mounting plates saying 0 MOA, 2 MOA, 4 MOA. I understand MOA when adjusting my scope when sighting my rifle in but not on the mounting plate. What is the difference between the 0, 2, 4 MOA plates?
In case you didn't figure it out, or to inform viewers: A 20 MOA base is generally used for shooting 500 - 1000 + yards depending on the scope and caliber (At 100 yards, one MOA is about 1" [slightly more] )The scope mount cants downward at 20 MOA, which will allow you to zero your gun at a greater distance. This prevents your scope from reaching the limit of elevation adjustment. I would recommend zeroing a rifle with a 20 MOA rail at 200 yards Good luck
Hello Vortex Optics, I just purchase a Springfield Armory Socom 16 and want to buy your Vortex Venom Red Dot. The question I have is concerning the mounting of the scope. should it be mounted on the picatinny rail or buy a scope mount and mounted it the way Springfield Armory has it on their Socom 16 QCB. Please advise.
When you finally got to the American predator all you talked about was the already installed rail. Need info on scope ring heights for your 56mm optics with 34mm tubes on that setup. I know all about the rail.
@@VortexOpticsUSA called tech support when they opened today. Top notch! He suggested 1.1 or 1.26 depending on whether I wanted to add flip caps or not. I went with the taller ones.
Hey Ryan, I have purchased a Tompson Center Encore barrel from MGM in 6.5 PRC. I also ordered a Talley 20 MOA picanny rail for the base. I have now purchased the Strike Eagle 4x24x50 MM to mount on top. What size or set of rings do you recommend for this set up? Thks
Just need to confirm medium height precision matched Vortex rings are appropriate for mounting a Viper Gen II 5-25x50 SFP. Will be with a 20 MOA Picatinny rail by EGW mounted on a Bergara HMR Pro (6.5 Creedmoor). Thanks
It took me a sec to really understand why one (invariably) needs a cantilever type mount on an AR-15. Notice on the AR-15 with cantilever mount, and the Ruger American with standard mount, in BOTH CASES, the rear ring is just at the front of the trigger guard. Thus, scope APPEARS to be mounted farther forward, but as a matter of length of pull, you need that cantilever just to put the scope in the same relative position as the scope on the Ruger American without cantilever.
@@Soli_Deo_Gloria_. A properly balanced and certified clean bench will indeed maintain a particle free environment in the work zone.... if that is what you meant.
I have a .308 Ruger American with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 with a 30mm main tube. What rings and mounts should i install? I currently have the Vortex Tactical 30mm High Rings but it seems that the scope is sitting way to high above the barrel. I would prefer installing a single uni base to help eliminate the need to properly balance/position the 2 sets of rings on the scope.
For that setup, we would recommend getting a 1-piece Picatinny rail and a set of our 30 mm Pro Series Rings - High. If you need a rail, check out www.egwguns.com
@@russellcummings5804 Whether you need a long action or a short action rail would depend on the caliber you are shooting. What is your Winchester XPR chambered in? Whether you need a 20 MOA or 0 MOA rail would depend on your application. What are you mainly going to be using this setup for?
Great video. Huge vortex fan. I’m currently attempting to figure out if I would need a special scope and or special mount to compensate for the recoil on a Henry lever action rifle in caliber 45-70. Could you give me some clarification?
Hey David - are you sure it is not a Weaver style rail? The Precision Matched Rings will only work on true Picatinny specs whereas the Pro Series will work on both Weaver and Picatinny style rails.
Iam in my 60s, so my eyes aren't what they used to be. So i need to put a scope on my Browning BL .22 .What scope and scope mount would you advise me to put... Thanks for any suggestions.
On a gun like that you'll want something with a nice, forgiving eyebox and good eye relief to make up for the fact that it will probably have to sit up a bit higher than is ideal just due to the design of the receiver and the stock of the rifle, so we'd recommend checking out something like our Crossfire II 2-7x32 Rimfire, or the Viper HS 2.5-10x44, the Viper being the better of the two by quite a great deal, but also a fair bit more expensive.
I bought a crossfire ll 4-12x50 scope ....and got VPR-1H High mounts not knowing scopes had specific mounts for specific models. I got them because i liked them ....rifle is a win M70 30-06..... Question is...will that affect performance ? I doubt it will but id like to make sure before i sight it in ...Thanks in advance ...
Purchased a Tikka t3x Varmint that still needs to be picked up. Was wondering if the PMR at 1.45 will be correct with using your Vortex Strike Eagle 5x25x56? Curious about the clearance of objective lens with a defender flip cap?
@@VortexOpticsUSA for this rifle there are none of these will fit. this rifle has only factory mount parts, this is the Sako A5 (Romans 5) model 338 wines mag Finland. thank you for your interest in my problem My optiks is it 34 mm tube 5-25-56 Cabelas neither Picatinny or Weaver match what I'm looking for so far
@@zdzichzcan2808 gotcha - our rings will require either a Weaver base or a Picatinny rail to mount to, so unfortunately we do not have an option for your setup.
I'm trying to mount a Diamondback tactical 4-16x44 scope on a mini 14 tactical. With the stock fully forward, I can't get a usable eye relief. What rings can I use to move the scope back far enough to solve the problem?
The best solution would be to get a mounting solution that would allow you to mount it over the receiver. Even if you got a cantilever mount and reversed it it would still not provide enough eye relief for you to use it properly.
I have a remington 700 SPS in . 308and i want to mount the Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50FFP MRAD and EGW 20moa base. What set of Vortex rings height do you recommend ?
Hi Guys, I just purchased the Vortex Viper PST Gen II 5-25 x 50 and plan to mount it on my Tikka T3x TAC A1. Can you let me know what high quality set of rings would best suit this application and give me the most out of the scope? Note: I don’t intend to shoot past 1000yrds. P.S keep up the great work, these vlogs are extremely informative 👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback and good words - we really appreciate it. The best mount for that scope/gun combo is the Precision Matched Rings in the 1.45" height to clear the hand guard. You can find them at: vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-precision-matched-rings-30mm-riflescope-145
Hey! I just purchased a Savage Axis 2 Precision rifle and I plan on purchasing your Vortex Venom 5x25 56mm scope. What rings would you recommend for this rig?
What height rings would you recommend for a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 30mm tube mounted on my hunting rifle Savage Axis II .270 win (with accutrigger) Planning on using the Talley or leupold two piece style rings.
I have an M1A socom cqb and want to run the crossfire 2 on it. I have the attachment to extend the length of the rail system to allow more scope options. However, I have no idea what scope ring mount to get. I was looking at the cantilever scope mount 3mm. Will this work?
A question from the admin or any 1 on this channel is if a sope has 120 moa's top to bottom then some experts says that to utilize all moa's u must have a 60 moa base So now how to find in millimeter or in inches that my scope base has 60 moa's Those experts also says that from rifle top (where the rail, ring base then rings r attached for scope) to the scope base u must have at least 1.5 inches gap or distance or height Any video reference or answer here
Hey there - great question! That would depend on where you fall on the internal travel of the optic. You never want to be directly on the bottom of the travel of an optic as that can add lots of stress to the internals of the optic. MOA is an angular measurement, so it's not necessarily as just simply measuring it. I would recommend checking with the rail manufacturer or the rifle manufacturer to see what comes on their setup.
@@VortexOpticsUSA yes the rail makers or scope ring or base makers would definitely have that answer, good guidelines My main aim is extreme long range so some experts also says that those adjustable scope bases which have 300 moa's they r good and will answer the question u r looking for but other experts says that the adjustable scope bases should b used in a manner where they can b tightly locked after selecting the specific moa before firing the round other wise it has no use, what's ur take on that and any video on that as well?
@@AsifKhan-xs2qi We don't have a video discussing that, but most extreme long range shooters are using an adjustable base. I would check out some videos discussing ELR setups here on RU-vid!

I have a Ruger Precision Rifle 22 WMR with a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56 EBR-7C MRAD FFP Riflescope . What kind of scope rings do I need to mount this scope?
For a Ruger American chambered in.308 with a Vortex Viper PST II 5-25x50 first focal plane scope are the low rings too low to clear the defender flip caps and the bolt action handle? I'll be using the EGW picatinny rail. Any thoughts on EGW HD rail (.35" high) verses standard rail (.40" high)? Also, vortex precision match or pro rings?
@Vortex Optics What cantilever would you recommend for a Rise Armament 1121XR 6.5 Creedmoor, topped with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 riflescope? What are the main differences between each of the cantilever mount options? And lastly, I might want to get into long range shooting sometime in the future, but do I really need to spend the extra $$$ on getting a precision cantilever? Or could a Sport/Pro cantilever be steady, sufficient, or reliable enough for the lower kick of a 6.5? (I also plan to use this gun hunting as well, so I prefer to keep it on the lighter side when possible.)
The pro cantilever would be perfect. All of them are plenty reliable and steady for a 6.5, the main thing you get as you upgrade from sport to pro to precision is the overall quality and precision tolerances that go into making the mounts themselves. For someone looking for the ultimate in precision machined rings that are perfectly matched to one another, the precision cantilever mount can't be beaten. That build quality does help it in reliability on heavy recoiling guns, or in harsh uses, but it's unlikely you'll be testing those limits with what you describe. The Pro is a great choice as well, plenty durable and reliable and at about half the cost. Many of us here use all three depending on the situation. For your particular application, the Pro seems perfect.
I'm getting a Mossberg Patriot Predator 6.5 Creedmoor and a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x50 Adjustable Objective Rifle Scope. What would be the preferred height from the Keystone Scope rings- 1.275, .990 or .850? I'm really looking at getting this right the first time without getting the wrong rings. Thanks!
It would depend on how they do their measurements and what type of rail system you are using. If they measure from the top of the rail to the center of the ring the .990 should work fine.
You would obviously save weight going that route. The biggest disadvantage to going with rings that go directly to the receiver is you lose the flexibility of setting the proper eye relief. With a 1-piece rail and rings, you can move the rings on the rail and slide the scope in the rings as needed to find the proper eye relief and keep the rings centered on the scope tube body. With 2 rings that attach directly to the receiver, the only adjustment you have is sliding the scope forward or aft.
I am mounting my Viper PST gen 2 5-25x50 FFP to an ar10 with 20moa built in to the upper receiver rail. I need to know what the minimum centerline height I would need to ensure clearance with the standard full length pic handguard from the objective bell.
For an AR platform you would want to go with a cantilever style mount that would get you up to the proper height and offset the optic enough to where you could get the proper eye relief. Something like our 30 mm Pro Extended Cantilever Mount would be a great option for that setup.

Good day sir. What is the difference between vertically split rings and horizobtally split rings? Also...what type and height rings would you recommand for a CZ 557 Ranger with a pic rail over the reciever.
Hey there - the difference is where they are putting pressure. Horizontally split rings are much friendlier on scope tube bodies and will be much easier to mount as they don't pull the optic to a different direction like vertically split rings will. What optic are you looking to mount on your CZ?
@@VortexOpticsUSA One more if you don't mind? I'm thinking that I might possibly go for the Vortex Viper 2 gen PST 1-6 LPVO instead. Would the earlier advice regarding the 30 mm medium rings still apply?
