The Pork and Pickle and the Jive are clear standouts for my tastes. Very articulate. Then I'll vote for the Mozztronics pedal, it had a certain warmth and it's winter outside 😊
Ok- Jean, again, what a ton of work, and a great series. Thanks for doing this. I listened three times, including a full blind listening on the third pass, just to ensure my choices were my choices. Its really great you did 3 types of settings, as some pedals really had something special in the low or high gain settings. I felt the majority of the pedals couldn't do mid-gain well enough to jump out of the mix, they were just round fuzzballs. I couldn't come up with a top 3, only 2 really stood out to me, in no particular order Substance Bass overdrive- it had a special character in each of the 3 settings B85 germanium- had those pointy mids that grab you and can cut thru the mix Interestingly, i found both the Eden glowplug and EBS multidrive to have the same fuzz emphasis thruout all three settings, nothing special when compared. Lastly, my favorite out of all your tests was the Tronheim Skarbass one, there is something special and magical about that compressor, and how it handles the low end separately. It sits so well in the mix, in all of your test settings.
So compare to the Eden, the tube emulation on the EBS works as expected then! The substance and B85 do sound great as stand alone overdrive, yes! Sorry about the SkarBassOne. It would have ruled if the shootout was for metal and modern rock!!!
I agree with the comment about none of them really sounding good in the mid-gain setting. Jellyfish was the only one that sounded halfway decent in this setting.
@abouc yep, the thing is that when the pedals receive a “fat signal” coming from the bass, they tend to sound like they’re about to explode! But I love how we can hear the character of the drive when pushed hard. So yeah, perhaps not the most useful setting, but cool nonetheless. Also, pay attention to how much of the clean signal can be heard in some cases even within the chaos… 😉
My favs were the Tritonlab Overdrive, Kasleder FX Jellyfish & JPTRFX Jive Reel Satchurator. However I will be buying a Mozztronics BOD-2 to support an Aussie builder and it will pair well with my Ibanez Phat Hed.
The clean tones are so well done in these videos that it's hard to hear any of these pedals as an improvement. At mid gain on the Epiphone the EBS, Eden, and Jellyfish sounded pretty cool. I think everywhere else I preferred the clean.
Great videos! Has been fun to follow. 1) Nobels ODR-B 2) Deep Phoria 3) Pork &Pickle Wish I could find a Nobels ODR-B at a reasonable price. It would be on the board immediately.
So weird that the Nobels has such a high selling price second hand. I mean, it sounds great, but it does have questionable quality details. Though, come to think of it, that never stoped a Russian green muff from costing 400-500€ in Reverb… Perhaps I already said it to you, but I got my ODR-B brand new around 40-50€ from a shop here in Spain that for years wasn’t able to sell it… I also own the compressor and the Fuzz (that sounds very very good on bass) both bought even cheaper brand new. I acquired the Nobels chorus too, but sold it immediately. Very noisy and “bah” on bass, disappointing. Oh, and the ODR-B is based on the original ODR-1 and the guys from Nobels told me you could get similar drive tones from the mini, around 80€ here in Europe. So there you have it, an alternative. Thanks for voting!!!
It's a lot more difficult to pick now. Love that you went for different bass loops that in the previous videos! My winners are - glowplug - b85 germanium - jellyfish But sadly neither of those will fit my pedalboard right now 😢
oh I missed previous votings somehow =0 for my taste it's: in low gain: FTELETTRONICA SUBSTANCE (but MOZZTRONICS BOD-2 and WAY HUGE PORK & PICKLE super close) in mid gain: B85 AUDIO GERMANIUM OVERDRIVE (but three that I liked from low gain were so cool too) hi gain: at first FTELETTRONICA SUBSTANCE (but then those other two right after again, also EBS-multidrive and then JIVE and JELLYFISH were also so awesome) bonus: FTELETTRONICA SUBSTANCE 100% (EBS multidrive also sounds nicely again) over all I'd chose these three as my favorites: 1.FTELETTRONICA SUBSTANCE 2.WAY HUGE PORK & PICKLE 3.MOZZTRONICS BOD-2
I agree with others, thanks for the hard work, and a great series! I felt like the EBS still held its own in this video, but my top three from this video: 1) Jive Reel 2) Jellyfish 3) Tritonlab FET ... and they were actually pretty close for me.
1. Kasleder Jellyfish - great all around, beautiful aesthetics, stays true to clean bass tone. Killed it on all styles. 2. EBS Multidrive - simple, straightforward, sounded good on all styles, seemed to stay really clear even with lots of gain. A huge plus to me. 3. Mozztronics BOD-2 - looks amazing, sounded great on all styles, got a little farty with tons of gain but not as bad as some of the others. Huge plus with the mid sweep and dry/wet. Special mention: the Nobels ODR-B. Sounded good on all styles. But I don't want to like it because they are unicorns now and way too expensive! Haha Great video!
I listened to all the series of shootouts. In this one, all sounded great to me. So, it is very difficult to choose 3. But here it goes, for what I do, which ones would I pick: WAY HUGE PORK & PICKLE B85 AUDIO GERMANIUM OVERDRIVE JPTRFX JIVE REEL SATURATOR Great videos!
Oh, this is hard... TLDR: 1) Eden Glowplug 2) FTElettronica Substance 3) Nobels ODR-B For me, the Eden might be the winner, it always produced a nice and thick sound in all examples. The FTElettronica Substance has a special voice that's always recognizeable and works for different gain settings, and it always cuts right through, so that's my 2nd vote. Nobels and EBS were a tie for delivering great sounds and being very flexible with little bulk. I'm picking the Nobels as my 3rd vote because both Nobels and me are from Hamburg :)
Oh, I have to add two more which didn't make it to the list: In your other videos, I really liked the Lusithand Ground & Pound, and the very short but very tasty demo of the Earthquaker Blumes!
@VeitLehmann awesome! The Blumes came out just as I finished editing the first four parts of this shootout (but I am already thinking about a part 2… 😈). And the ground and pound will be included in another shootout based on Rats and derivatives.
TX Pedals Deep phoria, B85 Germanium overdive (overall the B85 wins if yoiu like that breakup) and FT Elettronica Substance (although not the FT for high gain). Thanks for the epic video! Appreciated. Hamstead Subspace is the best I have found for this type of drive YMMV
Holy hell, these are some great sounding pedals! It was hard to choose, but I landed on these 3 for my top 3. 1 - Eden Glowplug 2 - Nobels ODR-B 3 - Mozztronics BOD-2 PS. My wallet is starting to sound like an old door when I open it… 😅
1 Way Huge 2 Kasleder 3 B85 The EBS is for me out if this contest. It's so good that it stands on my boards for 15 years. But these 3 ones lead me to Gas. But we had here some serious challengers as the Substance and the deep phoria... And I'm looking now to the wonderful Blumes...
1. Kasleder FX Jellyfish 2. Eden Glowplug 3. EBS MultiDrive ...folllowed (very close) by the B85. Voilà! (This demo also makes me realize that I shouldn't have sold the Pork&Pickle...)
😅 funny you should mention that because I was this close to selling it. Glad I didn’t in the end cause I am using it right now on my board. Thanks for voting!
The Eden Glo-Plug is great used with class D bass amps...gives them a warm tube like tone instead of that sterile tone..works really well with my Eden Terra Nova 226 class D 225w bass head or with most class D bass amps...even my class A Warwick WA300 or EBS Magni 500 1 x 15" combo sound much better once you've found the right settings for the Glo-Plug...
It feels weird cuz my favourites were all grouped together, but consistently accross all the riffs, it was 1) Deep-Phoria 2) Bass King 3) Tritonlab fet
No I don’t have to keep the same instrument. And if I would I’d probably have comments saying that I should change basses to hear how the pedals react accordingly. Each bass illustrates a style, that’s the idea.😉
1) Kasleder Jellyfish 2) Nobels ODR-B 3) JPTRFX Jive Great shootout with strong contenders, loved the "on the house" bonus groove. Wish you were my bass crazy uncle to jam out with. Cheers
Listening through Yamaha HS-5 monitors, These were the best in each: - Low Gain Drive: Nobels, Triton FET & Jellyfish - Mid Gain Fat N Fuzz: Triton, Deep-Phoria, & JellyFish. - High Gain full sound: Triton, Nobels, & B85 Germanium Drive. I guess my winner is the Triton FET Drive - very wide range of drives, & sounded the best. Jellyfish was close 2nd in my books, in high gain sound it was good, but i felt the b85 was a bit fuller sounding. Nobels is in a way also tied in 2nd, but i was surprised it wasn't all that for mid gain (perhaps a bit too subby with the semi hollow & flats?).
