Vox made an all tube 100-watt amp head from 2007-2009.... how cool! This one needed some love, so let's fix it up. Please support our channel via our Reverb store. reverb.com/sho...
These amps are extremely underrated. I love mine. Blows my mind that you can pick these up for under 500 bucks, but people want you to shell out $1,000 for an ac30.
Ive been through a fender supersonic 60 head, a orange rockerverb 50 head , a Marshall JCM900 SLX , snd and a mesa boogie duel rectifier, and i keep coming back to this amp. Its my sound . Just so you all know , on the gain side of the amp you have to have the foot switch plugged in with the reverb off on the foot switch , and then the reverb on the amp acts like another presence or something that adds sparkle. Also run the master volume up super high , and use the channel volume for actual volume. I have everything dimed , except the bass and it breaths fire. Use a EQ in the loop for a lead boost and you will have the best ever in my opinion. These amps do it all. The clean side is similar to a AC30 but not exactly, but very usable clean , and the gain side. Wow.
You won't notice the bright switch at high volumes, aparently the bright cap is a mod found on Master Volume Marshalls I would love to see what a Hot Mod V2 would do to an AC100 (something I'm considering doing to my own AC100) - people need to start experimenting with 100w amps other than a Marshall
@@DeadKoby yep, but my channel 2 is a lot more open and defined now, close to a Marshall JCM800. Fat switch makes it hot rodded. Channel 1 is still close to the old ac50. Next step is to turn the cut and presence controls into the poweramp where they should be.
Im picking up an ac100cph tomorrow and the clean isnt working they replaced the tubes it worked and then stopped again but the gain side works fine Im hoping it was just another bad tube but we will see channel 1 has incredibly low volume
I recently purchased a 2007 Vox AC100 CPH and I plan on using it for bass. Channel 2 is very sensitive, high gain and will over drive with the gain barely up, Im wondering if I could change out a preamp tube or tubes and get a little less distortion? Or a mod to make it cleaner? There are 4 preamp tubes, I assume one is driving the Reverb but I havent looked in to it so I may be wrong. The Reverb can is shot so I removed the wires and can, Im not going to be using it for now anyway. Ideas?
i have this amp, crapped out a few years ago. it was pretty good til it died. amp tech quoted me almost $500 to fix it. that's more than i paid... i wouldn't recommend this amp to be honest though.
Sounds like your amp tech wasn't willing to "pick through it" Vox-Korg techs usually just change out a broken board if needed.... that's the lazy way. I fixed a NightTrain by Vox, and I had to pick over the board for an hour or so to find a 25 cent part that failed.
Nice when all you end up having to do is a little cosmetic touch-up, isn't it? The loose chassis bolts and dinged tolex would cause some suspicion, though. Kids (OK, not just kids) don't take real good care of expensive gear, do they? Anyway, nice job sprucing it up! :-)
Thank you. Turns out the switches in the FX-loop circuit were dirty, and when I went to test it out, the amp cut out altogether. Nothing a little contact cleaner can't cure. I'm overall satisfied with the final result. It'll go on Reverb too, as it's overkill for the places I play. If I was playing Cleveland's Agora Theater, I'd LOVE to have this thing behind me.
I just bought one for $350 and plan on using it for bass, I figure if it doesnt work out I can use it for guitar or sell it. Korg doesnt want to put out a Vox bass amp because they dont want them competing with their Ashdown bass amps :/
