@@balkhazzargaming5373 Yeah, this is an unfortunate flaw I'm noticing on my first watch through of Critical role. I hear they get a lot better. But when it gets into a deep dialogue or heavy planning, and I notice the first signs of them spinning their wheels or trying to milk an NPC for something. I have to sigh a bit as i know it's definitely going to drag on longer than it needs to. I mean, i like the show enough to sit through over 90 episodes. But let's not pretend that everything they do is some sort of genius or good play. A lot of the audience is right there with Travis when the rest of the group starts to ramble, overact, or filibuster each other over a plan.

VM loves shady deals as much as they hate doors.

The gnomes are both the most important and most unappreciated members by far. They constantly pull their friends out of trouble, one is the most charismatic creature alive, and the other the strongest living connection to Saren Rea. The couples are seemingly always on a double date pushing the group into fight after fight and if Grog wasnt addicted to violence he'd probably be with either Pike or Scanlan.

Travis started brainstorming about a drowned man and was asking about half orcs at one point, marisha just lights up at the mention of the cobalt soul, Laura starts wanting to cast more spells and loves being pike... True love for Clerics, and gods know that without us, there would be no HP for all the trigger happy party members. Looking at even Vox Machina, without a Cleric combat has three phases: 1: Wooo look at my Damage! 2: Hes, not going down? Wait, he is hitting back?! 3: HOLY SHIT EVERYONE IS DEAD! WHO HAS A POTION?!

terrorblades This is kinda what happened to my group on Saturday night. Got in over our heads, we have NO cleric (Died a loooong time ago, player Rage Quit the class and rolled a wiz who promptly died anyways.) and the only thing that kept him alive, as well as our Bard was my Barbarian being like "OH SHIT!" and force-feeding them potions Grog style. My group gave me shit every game "WHY DOES THE TANK HAVE SO MANY POTIONS?!" Now you fuckers see why, and they don't question it at all anymore. I REALLY do miss our Cleric though *sigh*

It actually isn't as they have a limited amount of time to get there and kill Hotis before he is restored and comes after them again and next time his attack would be even harder to detect and bigger.

@@archie4president330 - do they know that, though? From the information they'd gotten via Matt, a couple months could have been long enough for Hotis to have already reformed. Taking a couple extra *days* to go talk to Zahra (a Tiefling Warlock who would certainly know Infernal, and who can read all languages) would have been smart. And to go collect Pike, who directly told them to tell her before going to Hell. Pike can cast Tongues, solving the entire language problem for 1 hour (3rd lvl, non-concentration, can be cast on another person). www.dnd-spells.com/spell/tongues Many cleric spells are directly designed to counter the threat of fiends, which is exactly why Matt (as Pike) told them not to go to Hell without her. They didn't even prepare at all for how physically hot it would be in Hell, or any other challenges to survival. They didn't find anything about the physical conditions there, but you can assume it's hot. Liam still hasn't mentioned setting Vax's Deathwalker's Ward to fire resist (from lightning before the Kraken battle).

@@Peter_Cordes that's a fair point. I do think that they still had a long time (pretty sure he's still got a whole to go when they find him) but no doubt bringing pike or Zara would be a good idea. From a metagaming standpoint they can't tho- that's probably why.

But yes there are real-life out-of-character constraints, and Matt can't play unlimited numbers of extra party members when their players aren't there. I was suggesting that if they wanted to talk to anyone about language and other things about the Hells, Zahra would be the one to *talk* to. Not bring her. And they should have at least talked to Pike, whether or not they brought her. But if they did, Matt already said Laura + Liam could play her character when Ashley can't skype in. If they chose not to bring her, Pike could have done a Feast and saved Keyleth's spell slot. And cast Tongues before they left.

Lilith actually is one and would attract even more attention. At least Vax's alter self went away after an hour and there would be no white tiefling to be found, even if they searched their rooms.

The feeling of the party gasping in fear, cheering loudly or laughing hysterically at descriptions, voices, or actions is certainly the most rewarding thing you can experience as a DM. Even something as simple as impersonating a barmaid (I'm a male) and reacting perfectly when the rogue rolls really high on a slight of hand check to slap her ass and make it look like it was somebody else can be all it takes to crack the party.

My proudest moment as a DM was when the party was just chilling out in one of the members' hometown and I surprised them with an attack on the village (long story, but it came from a mistake they made) and they had these genuinely horrified reactions at how I described the state of the village (there were about 100 people in the village and they only managed to save 11). It's just _so_ rewarding to get those honest reactions from players at the story you're telling.

@@EvieCorwell I think my proudest moment was when I made a whole city in my world, described it to my players and one of them just said: "This is amazing, I am going to take this city you built and put it in the game I DM for my other friend group." That was honestly one of the nicest things to hear. Also because I was very proud of the city I worked hours on to build.

Famous D&D characters like Mordenkainen and Elminster have done so on several occasions without much in the way of reprecussions. But it requires a lot of care, a lot of carefull reading and a lot of fine print reading. Demons on the other hand are completely unreasonable rampaging monsters. The only way to get something from a demon is to bind it, to break it down and dominate it. You cannot bargain with a demon, because it doesn't care for what you can offer.

The reason they went without her is the same reason they fought the Briarwoods without her: They can't really afford to wait until Ashley can come back to do big plot stuff that takes more than one episode. The kraken fight, for example, wasn't really a big thing. It was only one battle and that was that. This is more involved stuff, and Ashley is a busy lady.

In previous editions of D&D, some planes of Hell restricted levels of Divine spellcasting. The Abyss would restrict spells the deeper you went, until the 100th layer, where there are only 1st level spells available.

Yeah, unfortunately Taliesen isn't as smart or sharp as the character he's improvising, so discrepancies like this are inevitable. As is the nature of improvisational roleplay, no one plays their character perfectly all the time.

I kind of figured that was the kraken. At one point, he saved Vax whilst inside the beast and unconscious by actually giving him a roll for a death save instead of automatically failing him from damage from the acid of the kraken.

Not for me. Because death talks about the end of a character that can be replaced in the narrative, like Sam did with Scanlan and Taryon. The retirement talks about the entire campaign coming to an end.

Alex TheGreat Matt let's them cast spells as a bonus action up to level 2 and cure wounds is actually better than healing word for yourself.

Actually CaredonCousland, Matt lets them cast spells that have a casting time of a bonus action up to 2nd level. If spells already take an action, they still take an action. The normal rules for spellcasting are weird... if you want to cast two spells in one turn, the spell you cast as your action MUST be a cantrip, but your bonus action can be any level. That is a little confusing sometimes, and now really useful for such a large group of players, so Matthew simply made it so you can cast action spells at any level you like, but then the bonus action spell must be at most 2nd level.

Actually taking a potion is an Action. Bonus Action is a homebrew rule that Matt uses (which honestly makes potions way too powerful but it's his rule).

Yeah my comment is more just about the path of devils and arch devils, rather than specifically Lemures. I just misunderstood the role of the Lemure, I thought it was a tortured being/soul that was eventually corrupted and then granted minor powers in servitude, that then as it did more for the senior devils and owners was granted more power

Gian de Guia Laura played Jester in a one shot shortly after the slayers take. I think Laura had a liking for Zarah as a character and made Jester a less serious version of her for the one shot and she must have liked playing her as Laura played Jester in several one shots before making her a part of the mighty nine.

First of all I imagine Matt would have Allura be to busy now what with running emon, so I doubt he would have her go. Second Allura is actually fairly low level so hell probably isn’t a safe place for her.

@@Ginric99 well, kerrik was only lvl 7 fight raishan. And allura was one of the original people that was sent thordak to the fire plane. So...

I’m pretty sure Allura is a 15th level wizard, giving her spells up to 8th level. That’s pretty powerful.

@@williamtaboriii2175 Not just pretty powerful, literally one of the most powerful spellcasters in the world. Anything 15th level and up are essentially described as multiversal heroes in the rules

Depends on if Matts Setting is based on older settings than 4th Edition. Before that, Tieflings had all kinds of different looks and colors. And for a White Tiefling : Annah - of - Shadows, one of the PCs from Planescape Torment looks like that. By the way, since the group played Pathfinder before, in there you have a shitload of different Tiefling Designs.

@@RabenmundK he has a trackrecord of not using the books origin for monsters and creatures, so different colors of tiefling can be more common. And since Lilith specifically said that she was hunted for the color of her skin since she was rare, and he didn't correct her, that is how it is in his setting.

@Quinn They also have some odd sort of hierarchy and didn't consider family members free to leave iirc.

@@true_plays_games I didn't say it was a conscious character choice on Marisha's part, I said I liked that it happened.

I love that about Keyleth, most times you can see that little decision in Marisha when she decides to up the awkwardness because it is what Keyleth would do.

Imagine how much more entertaining this campaign would of been if Marisha didn't need to be the focus of most of the episodes and someone else's backstory got the spotlight more. She is consistently ranked the least favorite character not counting tiberius for obvious reasons.
