So, back in the 70s, they built a battery for Voyager out of spent fuel from a nuclear power plant that has been power it for over 47 years and millions of miles under the harshest conditions in the universe without needing to be charged. And yet they can't seem to make a battery for an electric car that can go more than 600 miles, in good weather, without needing to be recharged.
They hold back the most effective technology because it wouldn't make as much money for manufacturers and retail [and taxes for gov]. While it would save US a ton of money, it wouldn't bring in the kind of money they want. Efficiency and quality is bad for business, but it also holds them back as well. They're willing to make that sacrifice for more cash NOW.
@them12biggates26 They stated that the solar panels were ineffective by the time they got to Saturn - too far from the Sun to work anymore. That's one of the reasons they are surprised it's still working. And even at minimal power, 47 years is a long time.
