This Virtual Reading Group Extra with Dr. Shannon Chamberlain and Christy Lynn Horpedahl is a brief conversation about about Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, Part II and David Hume's Essay VI, "Of the Study of History," from his Essays, Moral, Political, and Literary.
In the second part of Wolf Hall, Cardinal Wolsey's fall is brought about by his failure to obtain the king's divorce. Cromwell is haunted by this and other losses. Hume's essay discusses what history is and who should read it (more ladies, please). Chamberlain and Horpedahl discuss the differences between history, philosophy, stories, and poetry; the difference between "knowing" the end and experiencing without the benefits of knowledge; and more.
