Surprising Duramax Diesel Catch Can Drain After 2000 Miles 3.0

This is in response to my prior video of the initial draining of the catch can. That was after just under 1000 miles and this time around, I ran the engine hard in 110 degree weather across the desert to see just how much oil this catch can would save from my engine ingesting it and burning.

I’m draining mine this week. Have about 3k miles with heavy towing in the heat. Will report back soon.

So now you need to take the cooler off and inspect it for oil again. This will prove whether that catch can is doing its job.
@Miguel-fh7bv

if that’s true then runvse just made money from our stupidity to buy it ! 😂

understandable idea, however the stock cooler is in place right now, the ppe charge air cooler removed did have some oil in it. The issue with that is, the charge air cooler was in place before the catch can was installed. So the results will not give what you are after. side note, the outlet from the can is very lightly coated with oil.
@sierracat
@sierracat 2 месяца назад
@@DemonWorksWell, that's not the results that there should be... should be no oil on the outlet side of the can if it's really doing what it's supposed to.

@@sierracatThat is exactly my thoughts. I think I am going to cancel my catch can after reading oil got through the can.

I'm waiting for input/results from others in the real world. Depending on those, I may purchase one but thus far it isn't looking very promising. And it doesn't seem to catch much oil... which makes sense if your not using any or low between oil changes, as no oil is being lost/consumed.

Any concern for cold weather issues with one of these catch cans if sitting outside long term then running?

I could be way off here. But it seems that a lot of these upgrades out there. Catch can. Fuel filter. Oil pan. Transmission pan. Rear differential cover. Seems like a high amount of cost for minimal benefit. Maybe I missed something. I’ve been looking at all upgrades for my 1500 at4. But it’s becoming really hard to justify this stuff. Especially once you factor in labor to have them installed.

The value is up to you as an individual. I bought everything you mentioned and more, and I’ve had a blast doing all the work myself. I’ve made it my truck and I’m very happy with that. I don’t know if there’s long term value in that, but I never buy upgrades for my vehicle with the intent of getting the money back. That’s a zero sum game, you won’t ever win. End result is I’m happy, and that’s all that matters in life.

@@Gameplayer70 I hear you. No disagreement on your position. Trucks are investments and the main factor is cost of ownership. I try to play that out to the best of my ability. I’m trying to get to where you are. Because you are right, happiness is all that matters.

As far as not getting as much oil in the can as Run VSE did, you can see in their video that there is no cross section connecting the hoses. You mentioned this was for a PSI spike or something, but could this be affecting collection vs having two independent hoses?

One thing I've noticed right away on the iDash is that Boost pressure now goes into the negatives (no more than -4.0 I've seen, usually -1 -2) when decelerating/letting foot off accelerator. Before CCV can, this would go to zero. Question is this acceptable? Bad? Anyone else seeing this?
@Gameplayer70
@Gameplayer70 2 месяца назад
Like you said I think you just got a tight engine. Have you noticed oil usage where you have to add oil between changes? I replaced my oil pan at 500 miles and I’m at about 4200 now and I haven’t noticed any change in level on my dipstick despite a small leak. I just recently got my catch can and got it installed. Great kit, but even with the clamp pliers that was still a total pain. It’s very tight under the firewall, I do not want to do that again lol.

Is that a N/A motor that runs on 83 octane, a high compression motor that must run on 91/93 octane, or a motor that came from the factory with a turbo or supercharger on it? High compression and engines with power adder usually benefit the most from an oil catch can. A stock low compression n/a motor will see very little blow by unless it has really bad piston rings and/or valve stem seals.

just did the s&b air box, ppe cooler, ppe turbo inlet, stillen scoop and vse catch can last week. love the extra air/turbo noise. with just a little 3,000lbs behind the truck and the worst i saw was ~25 above ambient even pulling 2-3 mile grades in northeast iowa at 25 psi sustained. 35k on the truck and i have never had to add oil between 5k mile changes. don’t anticipate it catching much, but every drop kept out of the dpf equals extends its life. a few hundred bucks is worth it.

So I just got mine delivered today, went to install it and found a sensor on my heater core line closest to the catch can mounting location. When I put the can in place it literally sits on top of the sensor pushing it down. In your install video I didn't see a sensor there. I reached out to VSE to see what their suggestions are, but if I want to keep it, my best bet is to turn that sensor 90 degrees on the heater core hose but I dont know the risks of doing so.

Any accumulation collected is better than it coating the cooler. Like most of the PPE improvements, they’ll pay off in the long run.

I have the 2020 1500 3.0, and mine has what I believe is the glow plug igniter mounted to the same bolt that the catch can mounts to which has its own bracket that looks like it’s going to be in the way. There’s also a black hose with an in-line sensor in the same location. I contacted VSE and they said it should fit without any modification. Has anyone else had to work around these items?

The one I’m hoping to release in about a month. Google: 3.0 duramax oil catch can. I made a post about it in the AT4 and Silveradosierra forums.
@Gameplayer70
@Gameplayer70 2 месяца назад
Until PPE releases there’s and it can be tested it’s really hard to say. There’s some differences in design philosophies between the two though. VSE states that they put the can where it is to keep it warm and to keep the hoses short for performance. PPE meanwhile is routing that’s out by the headlight, so it is cooler and the houses are a lot longer. Hard to say which will work better, but a lot of engineering going into both.

VSE is the only one available right now, o I cannot comment on my opinion at this time.

@@Gameplayer70 check out the one I created and will be selling in the near future. I engineered my kit to use hardline and AN fittings for longevity. Oil catch can has a dip stick to check fluid level, can screws off to easily remove containments and clean it, along with putting the oil catch can in an easy to access location. Google: 3.0 duramax oil catch can. It should show up on the AT4 and Silveradosierra forum.

Why arnt you running it from oil change to oil change instead of 1k miles, then 2k miles? If you run it at 7500 miles off the dash you would see real results. I do agree with the comment above, draining the innercooler to see if any oil made it past the catch can. I just installed mine and changed the oil, so I will run it a full 7500 miles to see what a deleted, LM2 gets.
@Gameplayer70
@Gameplayer70 2 месяца назад
He’s just trying to see results because it’s what people want to know. I just installed mine, and I’ve got about 800 miles to oil change. I’ll drain it then and then leave it alone until next change unless I see something in the site glass. I do 5k oil changes.
@DemonWorks
@DemonWorks 2 месяца назад
I'm just sharing results. If we look at the info provided from both companies making these available, they both showed an awful lot of oil in their cans. My results are showing nowhere near what any described. At the same time, I have seen people state theirs fills up rather quickly, so a 7500 mile interval would be bad if mine was to fill up quickly. Obviously, this engine yields no oil issues. The stock intercooler was just installed, however the ppe one pulled off did have some oil in it, more than this can did. However, we cannot go by that since this can was installed when the charge air cooler was already installed.
