It needs a s20 gearbox from a 1.5 LSI which has way shorter gears and makes the engine feel way more lively. That's the setup I have right now. At least keeps you in the power band (above 5500rpm) when you shift at the redline

its usually the OEM calipers from a acura TL/ dc2 integra type R. single pots but much larger and they have oem Fitment / great for a lightweight car. however the subs and amps in this car likley not helping that d16. b18a/b non vtec dual cams are so much more fun then these.

D16Y8 has just 127bhp with some bolt on mods, obd1 conversion and chip tuning around 15-20bhp is possible to gain. Shorter box would be beneficial as well. I managed to get 140bhp with just exhaust mods, move rev limiter to 7800rpm and some extra fuel added to engine map. Back in time it was quite nippy car to move around but nowadays the only way to make nice power out of that is set of vitara pistons with forged conrods and wuhan war whistle attached to exhaust manifold. Long live underrated D series!

One of the slowest cars I've watched you drive I think! Good for a beginner I would think, not enough power to get in to much trouble. Sounds pretty good. Closer gearing and a K-swap would do wonders.

In my honest opinion as long as the owner is happy then I'm all for it. The car might not be fast compared to others but it can also be a good base to get the skill. So many people are new and have to much power under them, and then it goes all wrong. This is a fun base and with time he can upgrade this, then this part there, and so forth.

100% that's exactly the point, this was my base track car to learn to carry speed through turns and get your racing lines. I own faster cars, but this one just makes you work for every hp 😂😅

It looks like it kicks in from 5500rpm, but not as strong as other ones seen here. Unfortunately when you upshift you seem to fall out of it each time.

That's the D16Y8 with it's long gearing for you. The D16Z6 has shorter gearing and afaik earlier VTEC switchover. So it feels a lot better.

You can definetley hear the VTEC but cannot feel it in the D16. Had one was I was 18years old. Very reliable and not enough power to get into much trouble lol.

The engine just does't want to rev up! Probably due to a very poor ECU calibration! It needs an overall update to calibration tables 😎

Del sol chassis is a tad heavier than an eg hatch of the same year despite being a 2 seater. These d series engines are great but they need to be paired with a closer ratio gear box. This is totally a momentum car and needs to be driven that way.

-Putting on lighter and correct size wheels ( I think 195/50 r15 is the best, I like OEM wheels) -Taking out subwoofers before track day (pretty heavy) -Stock air box without resonator chamber (or Integra Type-R air box is better but more expensive) With these small changes it could be a totally different car. The engine sounds great! You can also get better gear ratio with D13 EG Civic transmission.

Tuning them is a lot more work than B series, especially if you go for an NA build. You *can* build a pretty fast NA D16, it just takes more effort & money than a B series would. But it has been done and is well documented - most prefer the OBD 1 engines (Z6, etc.) over the more 'modern' ones (Y8, etc.) as they have better cranks can that endure higher RPMs than the 'newer' D16 engines do, and have better flowing heads.

2003 called... ok that being said, i miss my del sol man. its such a good car. its all the good of a 90s civic but the top comes off, but none of the drawbacks of a ragtop. and even with the top stowed you still get a TON of trunk space. i used to love that you can roll the back window down in the rain and get fresh air without getting wet. also at 6'2 i fit in it quite well without changing the seat. so much more spacious than even my nc miata.

Hahaha wauw this takes me back 14 years ago when I bought my Del Sol after my first car. It had a 4 speed automatic, I thought that had bad ratios but the manual is even worse 😂. I remember the thing went like 110kmph in second gear. Driving 95 and using kick down the auto would shift to second gear which felt insane for me at that time hahaha

I think the timing of the VTEC is really off by this car. Normally a d16y6 doesn't fall out of VTEC and for its 125 normally HP it does go. What i'm also thinking is that the weight of the stereo system is keeping the car much slower as it should be.

Vtec is only in intake side of the cams, not the exhaust side. Considered as vtec-e more focused on economical cam profile rather than power

They are not the same. Vtec-e engine is around 110hp and this one should be 125hp though I really wonder if this one really has full power

VTEC-e is even a bit more than just different intake cam profiles. Those engines switch between a 12 and 16 valve setup, depending on the situation. But as far as I know, only D15 engines were equipped with VTEC-e. D16's had the 'proper' SOHC VTEC, and (most) B-series had the *real* big boy VTEC for both cams.

I had a eg sedan with d16z6, I believe it's the same engine, but my rev limit was 8000, and I was able to keep the vtec all the time. However, this del sol is losing vtec every time you switch the gear so it always the gap beetween gears. Actually it's a really good engine, you can put d16a8 pistons, tune ecu and you'll get 150-160 hp on high octane fuel which is quite good for this little car. Also, it's funny that it looks like a car from need for speed underground.

I love my obd1 d16y8 civic, with the p28's more aggresive fueling and 8100 limiter, and some coilovers, and intake and exhaust, that car is quite fun in the local low speed twisties. But I would like to get a b engine one day when I start rallying for some extra power. If you do decide you love the d series enough to dump money into a skunk 2 intake and tb like I did, you will really hear (and maybe feel) the vtec crossover.

Yah, D-series. Had a del sol myself, need to roof in place for best chassis stiffness if there was ever any. Roof off was best in parking lot speeds. Thank, well enjoyed. Oh and those subwoofer and audio setup didn't help on those hill climb sections. Best when driven solo b4 a meal or after a 🚽 session. Fun car otherwise.

Del Slo! That gap between 2nd and 3rd gear is brutal man!! Still, no roof, loads of noise and revs, it's gonna be fun anyway. Also Rockford Fosgate... haven't heard that name in many years, cool to see someone in 2024 with a decent sound system in a car, it's kinda gone out of fashion.

D16 vtec engines and DOHC are not too bad, just most people compare them with the best engines possible, so it doesnt sand out so well. A turbo does wonders. Got a d16z6 which is pretty similar, and stock engine can do more than 200hp

Delsols are pretty cool but they're quite heavy for the size, I think they're even heavier than the mk1 MR2 aw11 which themselves were rather heavy for their size. Cool folding roof mechanism adds quite a bit of weight + that sound system. Needs a K swap to get it to boogie ^^ Still a pretty cool car, getting quite rare and surprisingly this guy showed restraint on power instead favouring supporting mods as priority. Fun little cruiser.

the solenoid is active from 5500rpm. the gearing requires one that opens around 5000.

I always loved the styling of the Del Sol. Honda built them as 'competition' for the MX5 and if they had gone down the NSX route of mid engine and rear wheel drive, they could have had a car that was a drivers dream, but they went the 'safe' route and delivered just another meh front engine front wheel drive cookie cutter. Sad, sad shame.😥😥

Indeed, a mid engined, RWD conversion is the way to go for the Del Sol, I've seen a few done before, completely changes the car, the way it should've been built by Honda.

can the exhaust back pressure effect vtec and how it delivers? shouldnt have to be flogged like that right? vtec was only activated from 6000 onward it should start around 4 or 5

This vid was full of commentary & suspense. I was like "any minute now......... any second now..........wait............. Have I missed it!?!?! I ain't gonna lie, that car is cool. Stick a K20 (or better) in it and I bet because it'll be light (I'm assuming), it'll be a right track weapon.

I'm working to get my S2000 track car ready for this year and my Top Secret Supra I finished rebuilding last year, each have their own playlist with Multiple progress videos.
