Inflation depreciates idle money. I'm in a privileged position to be able to save almost 65% of our net household income, as I placed it on safer investments. The key for us was not spending beyond our means. If you invest and have other sources of income outside of dividends then you will be able to live off dividends. Got north of $520K in my portfolio as I bought a lot of dividend stocks before, I'm buying more now, and I will buy more when it drops further.

The main problem is that most folks don’t care about anything other than football, Basketball and Music etc. They find it normal to take credit card debt which will cost them 20% per year but considers it risky to invest their money and make 10% or more per month. Learning to avoid high interest debt while also learning how to put your money to work for you by investing is a very powerful combo.

Starting out with a professional that knows the ropes of the choppy but profitable market is the best way to achieve getting a well structured portfolio. That’s why I have been working with 'Martha Alonso Hara" because in financial dealings one has to be prudent. Most traders enter and exit with a quick 10% profit which is not bad in general opinion but why not make more of the opportunities presented?.

Don't try to time the market. Even if you time it correctly, how would you know when to put it back in? The goal is not to beat the market (by trying to time it) but to 'be' the market. Accept the ups and downs with the realization that there is a very very high percentage that it will go up in the long term future. One year does not matter or even 5-10 years. This is simple, buy it and hold it till you retire and then when you need it, sell it in small increments for your living expenses. Read the Little Book of Common Sense Investing by the Vanguard founder John Bogle (the company that sells VTSAX). That little book will change your live if you apply its common sense principles.

Ok, so moral argument aside (not dismissing it, its compelling on its own)... why does Vanguard cost 3x what Fidelity does, if its running "at cost"? Is it just incredibly inefficiently run organization? And one that is always way behind on things like buying fractional shares, automating ETF purchases, etc? I'm a Fidelity user, and open to hearing why its actually better for me, not just theoretically better by underlying philosophy... but I'm just not seeing it in the bottom line for me the customer. I get the hesitation on the zero fee funds for their loss leader trade-offs, but the comparable returns of their paid fund to vanguard at 1/3 of the cost is hard to deny. What am I missing, other than liking Bogle and the underlying concept?

VTSAX 5YR = 49.58% (EX Ratio .04)... Clearly not the greatest fund although not a bad fund... ETF's are typically always a better bet than an Index Fund due to many reasons if your self-directed investing and don't want to purchase individual stocks. Unfortunately, for 401k or other retirement accounts, 403b, etc., (company sponsored), your typically limited to Mutual Funds/Index funds which have a lower yield due their nature of lower risk/reward...
