So, genetic mutations are an addition of the "biotech" expansion. The basic game has no genes or mutations. The basic game is focused on keeping your colony alive, expansions add more factors, such as genes, ideology, powers...

When I discovered Rimworld, I had already been a big fan of Prison Architect which has similar style and gameplay but way simpler. There’s also a lot more chaotic videos of it to watch if you still haven’t grasped the gist

Hey Xero for more a "in depth" review of vanilla Rimworld I recommend the video of Sseth. This video from Reggie has a lot of new content from the expantions so it looks more complicated that it is in the base game. For example all of the genes and mutations is from the expantions.

I remember in Tynan Sylvester's (Rimworld's creator) book on Game design, he mostly described Rimworld as less of a game...more of a story creator/scenario creator. Inspired by dwarf fortress...and i can't agree more...half of the fun is to pick Randy Random (Ai storyteller) and roll with the WACKY punches it throws at you :) The curve is steep (a lil harder than Warhammer 3) but it's WELL worth it. I'll recommend watchin more videos...for now ;)

as people may have pointed out, our boi Sseth already has a video on Rimworld, that was very old though, he reviewed it when the game hit version 1.0, but it still an in-depth review of the game, it is a great introduction to this massive storyteller game and there are fk tons of mods, you can just watch it for yourself and no need to put it on a reaction. I also recommend Ambiguousamphibian's channel if you want to see more rimworld scenarios like this.

To answer your questions. One of the DLCs, Biotech, introduces a genetics system and Reggie gave all of his starting characters terrible genetics with little positive ones, including ones added by mods. The game handles conflicting genes by having it be random which ones surface. Normally the benefit of taking bad genetics is needing less food. On the contrary good genetics make then require more food and at a far faster rate too. Even with the DLC this is not required as one of the presets is a normal human. Characters can "bond" with animals. Animals can only have one bonded human. If their bonded human dies, the animal goes berserk and starts attacking the nearest person. It's very possible and if anything encouraged to play the game more normally, but most people have fun dicking around and doing weird things.

The simplest goal in RimWorld is to leave the planet, as it is the only event in the game that will actually end the game, its the 9,999,999 other goals that you find, get found by or make up that make the end goal of leaving the planet one you will most likely never complete. Also recently they added a new DLC that adds Lovecraftian style events and monsters to the game, so thus even more goals for you to complete.

You used to be able to train rats in older versions, but don't worry, there's a mod that brings that back.

Several dlcs and mods are involved in this. That's why it's extra complex and chaotic. Not to say unmodded, no dlc rimworld isn't chaotic.

Yeah the big thing of rimworld is it lets you do basically anything you want and with mods it doesnt matter how bad or geneva convention shattering it is

For Gene-modding, GENERALLY (there's a few that simply have no benefit whatsoever and are just purely negative) a negative trait reduces metabolism (less hunger) or might reduce complexity. Since a genome has a limit on how complex or high/low the metabolism can be. Good genes generally make you much hungrier or add substantial amounts of complexity, so counter-balancing them with negative genes can allow you to create a somewhat balanced creature with very powerful abilities that would normally be too strong to work. however that's from an expansion (Biotech) the core game doesn't do that. the 4 current expansions are: Royalty (Adds a system for nobility as well as psychic powers (orginally the psychic powers were tied to nobility (and getting powers without an appropriate level title would cause the Empire to go to war with you) but they were later uncoupled from it, with tribal societies able to develop pskers naturally while other other types can find tech solutions to psyker abilities, though you can still join the Empire to as a method of psyker advancement). Ideology: Adds psuedo-religous mechanics but functionally it's just additional ways of tweaking how the game works (also added official slavery mechanics) (i.e. if you wanted to do a cannibal play through instead of being forced to recruit just cannibals (as non-cannibals would generally go insane and be largely useless from all the negative moodlets associated with cannibalism they would be under unless you managed them very carefully), you can just make an Ideology that accepts cannibalism (which works similar to having the cannibal personality trait though depending on the setting you won't nessecarily get any mood bonuses from it without the trait if they merely don't care about cannibalism) and spread it to new recruits that don't already follow it. There's both static ideologies which never change from when they're created and Fluid Ideology which start weaker but can earn points through various actions, that allow you to tweak and customize them over time. It's fairly complex but there's also a Lite option that adds most of the other ideology mechanics but everyone follows an ideology the same as vanilla settings, so you can experiment with some of the rituals/leadership positions/slavery/favorite colors/relics etc, without a lot of the potential headaches the full ideology system can bring). Biotech: adds gene modding, robots, and the ability to have children (along with an education system to raise them with). (animals can breed in the base game, but "human" reproduction requires Biotech). Anomaly: Adds eldritch horror stuff, as well as psuedo-magical upgrade system similar to Bio-tech, but based on studying eldritch bullshit and then using it to augment people.

If you want a kind of entertaining introduction to rimworld i high suggest the review sseth did on the game. The video you watched is mainly about a Rimworld DLC called Biotech and some other mods, the base game doesn't have genes and stuff. The DLCS for this game are worth every penny tbh

It'd be pretty cool if you react to some Half Life Lore like how you react to Warhammer Lore, if you do decide to react to some HL lore, I’d recommend the Templin Institute since they make quick and concise lnfo dumps, making them a good start, and for more deep dives, I’d recommend the YT Channel Skyrrion, lore about the 7 Hour War, Combine, Gordon Freeman, heck might as well do Portal Lore as well since they’re connected with one another.

Wtf is this game?

Rimworld has a few dlcs. Ideology: Is all about religion Biotech: Introduced genetics into the game. Along with making robots n mechs. And furries. And vampiree Royalty: Where you can be a king. And focused on psyonic powers. Anomoly: If you like SCP and lovecraftian stuff. This is the dlc for you. Rimworld: Theres many ways to play it. I won't spoil it so you can experience it for yourself. But theres.. Alot of great ways to play. And god. Theres so many mods on the workshop. Warhammer Fantasy & 40k total conversion mods. Star Wars. Star Trek. Lord of the Rings. I once saw a harry potter mod. And some mods were even included into the base game itself, and were paid for their contributions for their hard work. But seriously check our Ssethzeentachs video for rimworld. Its a pretty good reprepsentation of Rimworld. But its a seriously fun experience by itself. But best to play it first before the dlcs and mods.

Sseth here on YT has a video of base game rimworld before most of the dlcs came out, just as memey as Reggies. But is pretty good representation of what Rimworlds like. Rimworld for a time was outlawed in Australia for being too violent and encouraging people to commit the worst war crimes against humanity. And they had actual government play testers play Rimworld. And with the dlcs. It only expands the war crimes you can commit.
