Dear students and dear staff,
Last year, the first Festival of Lights took place on the VU Campus square in front of the debate centre 3D. I remember looking over the crowd at all the candles that were lit in the dark, it was such a moving and beautiful gathering. The Festival of Light was fueled by ancient stories and wisdom traditions such as Hanukkah, Diwali, as well as Christmas. Traditions that inspire us to emphasize connection and community. Yet this year we had to celebrate the Festival of Lights very differently.
Looking back on 2020, I can only conclude that this year has been tough on all of us. For the past ten months our education, teaching, work and campus lives were disrupted. And we all had to figure out how to reshape our studies, our jobs and our lives. Members of our community, students as well as staff struggle with isolation, Covid-19 and missing out on daily routines.
Therefore, we recorded a Festival of Lights video message for you. A message with many familiar faces. I’m sure you will recognize some. These are voices from within our own community, expressing that we miss each other, recognizing the struggle many of us face and showing us the resilience that lives among us.
With this Festival of Lights, we show who we are together as VU community.
