Vulcan XH558 - Surfing the 'Waddo Wave'. 

I too remember an airshow with a Vulcan in England somewhere, when the pilot lit up and went vertical the sheer power of the moment brought tears to my eyes.

@xoio For the first time in ten flights since the completion of her restoration, there was a technical problem which prevented XH558 taking off. The problem was a fault on a voltage regulator on the alternator on No.3 engine. Instead XH558 demonstrated an aborted take off at full power on a wet runway, which provided spectators with not only the sound but also the spectacular sight of the Vulcan in the midst of a huge plume of spray in the sunshine.

You're right, her first post restoration flight was on 18/10/07; too late for her to participate in any airshow appearances that year. 2008 was her first year back on the airshow circuit. The 'fast taxi' was an intentionally aborted take off to entertain the crowd, instead of her flying display which was cancelled due to a technical fault which couldn't be quickly repaired, making her temporarily unsafe to fly. I hope this explains the situation. Steve.

I think the point was, that a lot of people had paid a lot of money to see the aircraft perform. Also that the operators were trying to get sponsorship and funding. What it did was totally safe,properly planned,not what was expected but better than nothing.

Joe, Thanks for your comments and I'm glad that you enjoyed this. I also saw the flight with the Lancaster the day before and think I have some film of it somewhere, which i'll have to search out and post. It must have been great to see the Vulcan fly over Grantham. Lets hope we see it many more times this year and who knows, in years to come if they can get the wing modification funded and done. Expo 86 I saw the Concorde do a couple of low fly-overs of the city, you may be mixing the two up, as they were both quad-engine delta-winged beauties.

The Avro Vulcan B2 aircraft is former military,now privately owned The operators policy is not to fly the aircraft with any kind of fault.It was a prime display item that the crowd expected to see flying. The fault couldn't be rectified on the day. The captain and crew therefore elected to do an intentional aborted take off and run along the runway purely to entertain the crowd.It flew today at RAF Fairford where there was another B2 - the very impressive US B2 Spirit 'stealth' bomber.

Thank god she's cleard to fly till 2015!

Beautiful birds. I remember seeing one doing a very slow and low flyby over the city of Vancouver back in the 80's. I think it was participating in the Abbottsford Air Show at the time or it may have been during Expo 86. Bloody impressive and awe inspiring sight.

Love the way the video captured the sheer disappointment in everyone as the engines were throttled back at 1:10.
