I wanted to thank each and everyone of you for the support and encouragement! Without you, the videos would have stopped after the 1915 fiasco. I can’t say how much the VW community means to me!
Mike Hammer thank you Mike for your support! I wouldn’t have pushed through without the VW community pushing me along. It takes each one of us to make the community better!
Hey I just wanted to tell you what a GREAT job on your build ! ! It always amazes me how we can buy a butt load of parts and pieces and put them all together and it "lives" ! ! These engines are all "learning experiences " so your spun bearing engine is ancient history bro ! ! I am glad you picked yourself up and built this "beast " , it runs good and looks good 👍 KEEP BUILDING BRO 😎 👍
Thank you, I appreciate that. It takes quite a bit of time even off camera to ensure these parts all work together properly, several mock ups, etc. It’s one thing to slap it all together but it’s another to ensure everything is proper and within spec. Everything is a learning experience, no one knows everything and I’ve stated that several times in my videos.
I want to thank you for your videos especially having your son assist with your builds. I’m just getting back into VW after 50 years since my first 1965 beetle my dad got me when I graduated from high school in 1972. I was hooked from the beginning but life took me in many directions since then. I just purchased a 1967 VW deluxe bus with a fresh 1915 in it. I will be referring to your videos for guidance since I feel yours are the best I have seen. Thanks again and keep posting.
I appreciate the kind words and also thank you for being here and taking the time to comment. Glad to hear VW’s have found their way back in your life. We all have things happen in life that take us away from this or that, priorities suck sometimes lol There are other great, more experienced people out there that could potentially help you more if needed, just reach out and I’m sure most would be willing to help. I’m not an expert, just a guy recording his experiences and ways of doing things.
Hi buddy I agree with you your bug is cool, I think 2 litre is a good size and we’ll I think I would like to make the same motor you have, if you can assist me on your components used ,carbs, Distrubitor . What is a good compression ratio and why cam size , fk8 is that similar to Engle 110 and was told exceeding more than half inch lift reduces life also have you had any experience with the total seal rings also called no gap , or what video’s address my questions thanks Harry
I love your channel bra, I have 67 I'm about to tackle a 76×92 with mine with an engle 125 I will probably ask you for some pointers on the way an hey that bad boy sounds awesome an I'm right next to you in ga lol keep up the good wrk
Thanks man, I appreciate it! If you’re going to do 92’s run the thick wall 92’s and not the regular ones. Or just make the jump to 94’s and be done imo. 🤙
I haven’t used Engle lifters yet. I’ve had good luck with lifters from Scat, CB Performance and AA Performance. I’ve mostly used Scat lifters as that’s what the local shop mostly sells. I’d use any of those 3 anytime though.
I have a tip for you - The crank shims fit perfectly in a tape container. I buy the 33 + electrical tape which happens to come in a container. I measure all mine then label the container as to which size is in which.
Hi Gary I watched all the engine build videos I didn’t comment on all of them, they were really good, brings me back to my old VW days when I did a lot of engine stuff, but never took them as far as you did, I still have the Manx Buggy but sold the Baja to buy the 53 truck, oh did you send me any of your stickers, I would really like to get one up on the 55 truck board
Good afternoon sir! I appreciate the kind words and support. I try to do the best that I can with what I have. I’m not perfect and we all make plenty of mistakes along the way. I have your envelope sitting here just haven’t had time to drop it in the mail yet. Sorry for the delay but I’ll get it out soon!
I have a 1915 now and I am wanting to go bigger. I was thinking 2332 but from your video's I don't think I want thin spots in my case. The 74mm crank looks a bit safer for me to go than the 84mm I was thinking about. Was 139 more cc's worth all the work or do you think I should go farther. Is there a crank available between 74 & 84?
Personally I’d go with an 82mm crank, that would give you a 2276. The main reason I went with the 74 stroke is because I had basically new pistons and didn’t want to but another set. There are A and B pistons. A is for the non stroked engines like my 2054 and your 1915. B pistons are stroker pistons which are for the larger strokes cranks. Depends on the case and what rods you have will depend on how much you’ll need to clearance out.
@@VWJawbreaker This motor was build 10 years ago and was a stock H VW case align bored, bored to 94's, drilled for full flow, rebuilt stock rods with a counterbalanced crank. 041 heads with 40 intake 35.5 exhaust valves and dual Empi 40's. It's bolted to an 091 transaxle in a rail frame. Would the 82mm crank need to have more clearance in the case than the 74mm crank?
@@trevorallan1340 yes, you’ll need more clearance even for the 74 crank most likely. The way the rod bolts are on the stock rods will require a little more work with the case than aftermarket rods also.
Nice job, love the videos. Very helpful. Question: On the block off plate for the fuel pump on top of the case, what is the line you have coming off of that plate for and where does the line lead too?
Hi Randy. Appreciate the kind words. The hose on the fuel block off plate is a breather hose that goes to a breather box on the firewall. Larger engines, higher hp engines benefit from a breather box but not all engines need one.
Great and informative Video. Break in sounded so smooth. Love to have an engine that size to travel across America and the complete distance of Route 66. Quick Question, do you use standard oil or multi grade? Again Awesome Video!👍. BigW:-)
Big W Adventures thanks Big W, I’m lucky to have such great support like yourself to keep me pushing forward. Still tuning the engine but the mpg isn’t horrible and I have room to improve! I run Valvoline VR1 oil either 10w30 or 20w50 depending on the engine. The VR1 has high zinc content that our engines need to live a long life. The main key is zinc for our oils, not so much the oil weight.
Hi Gary we just got our 1641cc running for our 2nd sandrail our first is a 1915cc efi turbo I was very happy to hear your 2054cc roar to life its must have been a spectacular feeling to hear it run in person especially knowing its your hard work
G'day Kevin here from Australia. What a monumental occasion congratulations. Hey did you ever get the paper plane that I launched from my backyard here in Australia with words of encouragement written on it. ✌ Peace guys
Nice Work. That motor sounds great! I get a lot of inspiration watching your videos. Super impressed with your drive, dedication and logical approach to what your doing. I need to step up my game now and get out in the garage to finish my 2017cc build then swap out my new motor and transaxle in to my 56. But dang it's cold out there this time of year. Can't waite for the ride along video. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences. We all learn from watching your stuff.
Rob Sannes thank you Rob for the support and encouragement! The way I see it, if I can help 1 person then these videos were worth the effort. Not to mention how cool the VW community is and being apart of that is also a perk. Stay warm and get the engine finished up!
Don't let it get you down I've been there many times some times you just maybe RC cars would be fun. Please keep your channel Its nice to see you people working with their father
JC Quick thanks JC. I couldn’t do it without the support of the VW community and every one of you down at Triangle. Sometimes things happen and you just have to push on. I’m glad I did and Levi learned some lessons as well and that’s good for a kid his age.
Walter Christen thank you Walter. Several people have asked why I don’t have more subs and to be honest, I don’t have an answer for that. Things happen the way they are supposed to.
I really appreciate that! It’s not about me, it’s about the community and helping everyone keep their VW’s on the road. I’m not a know it all, just someone who’s dumb enough to record themselves and put it on the internet. However together as a team we are stronger and more knowledgeable.
antbarrimont yep. If I pulled the spring the plunger would slide out. Ended up finding stock springs that were not as stiff as the new ones and dropped the oil weight down. Now she’s idling around 15psi and around 50 when cruising.
Thank you, in this videos you did show the most important things new builders need to know about building a 74mm stroker. It people let you putting the info out there for the vw lovers that help them all. This tips for building a vw are very important.
wayne alexander I’m glad you liked the videos. I’ve never claimed to be an expert, in just sharing my experience with others, the good and the bad. Together we can learn from each other and keep these cars on the road longer. Thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate you stopping by.
Well done on bouncing back and getting it going. I am sure that sound of it coming to life and then settling on down to an idle was worth the pain. Would be interesting to see what sort of time and $$ you have in the 2054. Cheers, Steve, Sydney Australia
porsche356a yes sir Steve, you are correct! The anxiety of the cam break in is a rush and a major stress moment all wrapped into one. Seeing the oil pressure, temps, no leaks and no unusual noises sure sitters the mind real quick. As for the money into this build, I did get some parts for a killer deal which enabled me to build it to begin with, so the total cost isn’t as bad.... besides the new case and crank of course. Knowing me I’d hate to know the final cost lol
Great job brother!! She sounds wonderful! I knew you had disappointment in your eyes, when the 1915 burped along the way. But I knew you had it in you to keep moving forward!! Me personally, well I would have went downhill briefly. But you kept pushing!! But these are the type of things that happen, when we are in the car culture. The VW community is one of the best I’ve ever lived through. My whole life has been VW. Briefly when stepping into the muscle car world, the people weren’t as friendly for some reason I’m not sure why. You did this brother, and you did it on your own. I’m very happy with your outcome!! I can’t wait to do the ride along in the next video. And hopefully if I can make it to the bug jam next year maybe I will get a ride in jawbreaker!! Keep up the good work my friend, you are really doing a good job. And just for reference, I change the fuel filter on my last beetle alongside the transmission where I had a mounted. And I also forgot to take the vice grips off. Could not figure out why the car wouldn’t run. 🙄😂
Slades VW Beetle I did not do this on my own. If it weren’t for awesome people like you I would have thrown in the towel. I do agree whole heartedly that the VW community is the beat out there. This is the exact reason why I post my experiences to help the community along.
VWJawbreaker That was nice of you to say that. We’re always here to help motivate each other, and be there when one needs help or gets some bad luck. Your channel is a great asset to the whole community! It truly is!
Slades VW Beetle and I appreciate the kind words greatly. Just remember, all of us together make the community what it is. That includes your channel as well. We’ve all learned something new thanks to you.
VWJawbreaker that’s really nice of you, I’m a small channel, just having fun. Sometimes it’s not very much fun when things go wrong I know that feeling too well. I cannot wait to see the ride along in your car, she’s going to roar!!! This is been the best for me belonging to a VW community. There’s none other like it. Keep up the fun my friend!
Slades VW Beetle regardless of being a small or large channel, it’s up to the person to make it what it is. I’ve been doing vids for over 2 years and only recently did I start to grow a little. I’m not stressing over things I can’t control, just happy to help a few along the way and connect with some great people. Still tweaking the car after this engine, definitely have more vids to come.
Jaden Weaver thank you. It’s the expandable wire loom from amazon.... they have it in different color combos as well. It protects and dresses it up a bit.
Jonathan L I appreciate the support Johnathan! I’d love to have a camper but the bug fit the bill and budget at the time. She’s grown on me quite a bit since then 😁
Vintage Speed VW dang it man, sorry to hear that. Hope for the best but keep me posted either way. I’m really hoping to make it out even if I just hang back and watch.
@@vwbtl9 I personally haven’t done side by side comparisons however the theory is the sump adds more volume of oil but doesn’t really help with cooling. Reason being there is more volume still being heated up by the engine. An external oil cooler in addition to the stock oil cooler is the best way to cool it down. That’s after you make sure the engine is tuned and running properly and all tins are in place.
@@VWJawbreaker so you would not recommend mounting it for cooling only? i dont do hard turns i only accelerate on straight lines but on turns i go slowly
Somebody got some boots! The toesies police will be pleased. Engine break in really gets the adrenaline going, great stuff man. Gotta ask- is that a Schrader valve on the oil line? What's it for? Regarding encouragement during this build- watching you power through adversity is the most encouraging thing of all. Thanks for sticking with it! We all occupy a great little corner of the YouTubiverse.
Haptic Garage I count have done this without the fellow RU-vid encouragement that’s for sure! It’s so nice to know people have our backs and best interest at heart. What Schaffer valve are you referring to? I don’t have one on the oil system.
@@VWJawbreaker yup, the encouragement is great. I saw something installed in the line at the remote filter mount I didn't recognize. Pressure regulator? Flux capacitor? Dohickey Thingamabobber?
