There is a trick I used many years ago when I was changing a VW Bug clutch! Once the engine was on the floor, I jacked up the drivers side real high, removed the tire and just pulled the engine out the wheelwell. The shroud easily clears the brake drum if you slide it out sideways!
20 some odd years ago, I restored old bugs and buses for a living. I pulled dozens of motors. Quit doing so around 1998. 21 years after my last VW, I got a '61 ragtop. Watching your video helped me remember everything I need to do to pull the motor. THANKS for that. It was fun and entertaining. Might I suggest you quit using pliers on your battery cables? Proper tool for the job and all.
I hadn’t pulled a vw motor in years. I found your vid and thought... this might do me some good! It did! Thanks for that! Best part was the engine to trans bolts weren’t even tight so it made the job easy😂. Thanks for the vid!
Nice fun video... well done. A piece of cardboard to set the engine on is helpful and it makes it easier to drag the engine out from under. Thanks fellow VW enthusiasts... you have a great family and friends.
Very good video a Buddy of mine showed me that. Using the bottom of a old Shopping cart frame. Is a excellent way of rolling a VW motor around your garage an its also a perfect. Height for removing and installing the motor i a car By raising and lowering the back of the Bug once he was riding in my Jeep with me and saw a old. Shopping cart on the side of a highway we were on he made me turn around and drive back to the spot so he could cut the top portion off and set a motor on that. Would fit under a workbench he built. In his garage for that purpose. Keep in mind that guy has owned 27 Bugs in his lifetime and a few Buses and in his defense he told me he has always found abandoned Shopping Carts though his travels and wouldn’t ever take one from a grocery store all he uses is the very bottom part that. Has the 4 wheels on it I used his to pull a motor on a 71. And it worked great It was many years ago i did that work but I remember. That i had to use the bumper on the Bug as a jack point which of course isnt designed to do that but with some wheel chocks and a few wood blocks i was able to pull the motor by myself pretty easily BTW i thought it was also. Really cool to see your kids participating in the video and the work I was a Woodworker for over 20 years and i tried to teach. My son at a young age. A lot about the trade he is now 26 years old and has become a pretty good Craftsman although he chose to have a career in the computer industry
Great job, guys! So cool that your daughter is helping. What a great bonding experience. She will cherish these memories forever. My daughter who is about the same age is helping me with our '68 Karman Ghia which she will have the privilege to drive when done.
Great video! Reminds me of when I was a kid helping my dad with his ‘70 VW bus. I just got a ‘65 beetle recently from my grandpa and I gotta remove the engine for an overhaul. So this video helped! Thanks!
Great work on the video, the lighting and the shots were just right, it must have taken a lot of time to prepare each shot and then to edit the video, thank you this really helps. And just to piss everybody off: use more pliers to remove battery cables.
Great video. Sure, there are always the know-it-alls that have to chime in on other ways you could have done it, but you did it, and you got some good time in with your daughter and friends. Hats off to you! I'm pulling my motor this weekend and now plan to enlist support from my son. :) Have a great weekend and keep up the good work!
@@timykgb the motor pull on my 70 went well, but I couldn't wait for my son to get home so I just did it myself. I keep threatening to make him come help me. :) I posted a video on my channel if you're interested.
I gonna have to pull my engine out soon , my 1200cc has a rod knock 😓 Im getting a rebuild engine for it. Thnx for the video , this helpen out a lot. Looks like a easy job to me.
I pulled my engine to rebuild it on my last Bug, I'm about to pull it on the one I'm picking up next week. I'm going to do a restoration in my garage. BTW next video needs more pliers and make the music louder ;-)
Hey, good video guys, I enjoyed it. Took a whole family of efforts I see. I also did it the dummy way lol... I had to edit out the mistake from my video... car wasn't high enough, then fall off the stands as I was trying to squeeze the engine out... at least I can laugh about it now lol
It’s easier if you don’t have the car up so high when pulling the engine. Once the engine is away from the transmission and on the ground, then jack up the car at the “Y”, which is the area just before where the transmission cradle starts to divide. And all those boards are unstable.
I've found that it's more practical to lift that sucker up just about as high as you can in the rear so that when you drop the motor it slides out from under it with ease. You can see they got hung up for just a second on the tin and almost couldn't quite pull it out even at that angle. Otherwise you start to pull tin, alternator/doghouse, rear bumper, etc etc just to clear the motor to pull it out all the way. Everyone I know who wrenches on these vw's at home with their DIY jack stands and floor jack does it the same.
I worked with two guys who (with practice) could remove this engine in 1/2 hour. Found out later the reason for all the practice. They "borrowed" a newer bug after hours from a dealer. Had it off the lot and back again, with serial number removed, crappie engine. They changed the serial number to match theirs. Never got caught.
nice work. hope to see a safer floor jack some day! cheap tools are cheap cause they will fail and hurt ya. never fun. a few extra bucks can go a long way with functionality and safety of tools.
Excellent video. Funny, most of the U-Tube videos showing how to remove a vw engine, never shows the disconnecting of the heater cables. Having taken out a few engines in my time, I know this is a necessary step.
Fantastic video! Love the music :) and thanks for posting. Why are you pulling the engine out? Also, how hard is it to pull the engine out from the transmission? Do you definitely need 3 guys to do that part, or more?
I'm learning to pull my first motor from this video. My VW mechanic does it by himself all the time. One can do it but I'm sure its much easier with two. As seen in the video its a balancing act. Drop some, then pull some. Drop some then pull some. Do that until its clear to drop all the way.
The record for a VW beetle engine pull is 1 min. 4 sec. A driving, running beetle, remove engine, pull 1 meter away from vehicle, reinstall and drive away
They are doing it backwards you pull motor back with car lower then jack car up with motor on blocks and you don’t have the motor wobbling all over the place. Use a wider board on jack that holds the motor and heat exchanger pipes
Ya'll were doing so well, .... till the girl left, then it was like a bunch of monkeys with a football! 😱🤪🤣👍✌ Removing and installing a VW engine is an easy one person job! Still ya gotter down! 🤣👍✌
Thanks Tony. They’re in a pretty awkward spot and it’s hard to get a camera in there. If you have a better shot of both top bolts feel free to post it. Otherwise there are diagrams online giving you the location.
yea, it is hard to get a camera, wrench or hand in there. i kind of know where they are suppose to be, but was looking for a video showing them for a friend that don't know where they are... thanks
The music though. As a musician, I cannot overstate how painful this video is. I don’t know if I can finish it. 15-20 seconds of bad music, on a never-ending loop. Louder than the person talking. Seriously, you might as well have added screaming babies over this. I made it to the 5 minute mark and now I have to take a break and drink something alcoholic.
Really, pliers for the battery cable? The yellow wire to the solenoid and choke stays. Get a real jack, stands are letting car move. This is embarrassing, especially since you've already had it out for the new clutch.
I’m sorry, but I couldn’t even finish watching this because that noise was too annoying to deal with. I’ll have to look for another video to help me with my project. Do you have a link to a similar video without the elevator aggravation music?
