VW Bus Shifter Bushing Replacement

I recently replaced the bushing on the front shift rod on my 1974 VW Bus. After inspecting the shift rod, I discovered that my bushing was missing completely! I hope this video helps anyone who may be thinking about tackling this job. Mahalo for watching!

Actually… an impact driver works excellent for stuck bolts. But use common sense and patience. Short, light bursts, both directions; loosen, tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen… gradually increase the force and time as you focus more on loosening the bolt. Bam! Mission accomplished

Thanks for sharing! Excellent job. Very helpful to have your experience as a reference. At 12:21 time …is there a cap on the open shift rod at the front end of the bus? (on the end you cleaned super well)

No, there is no cap that I'm aware of. I wonder if there was originally? It seems like a good idea to keep water and other things out of there. Good question!

I just looked at my 72 bus and it doesn't look like your setup, can't see a hole for a coupler. Bentley manual says, on 72 models only, the flexible coupling is installed on a seperate extension rod that is bolted to the end of the rear shift rod.

Awesome, thank you for the great feedback. I'm glad you found the video helpful...and I hope you are able to get shifting improvement by replacing yours. I was just glad I didn't have to replace the rear one, as that involves dropping the engine. I figure I'll do that the next time I have to remove the engine for any reason. Liked your video. I have found after dousing bolts with penetrating oil, use a 1/4” drive to listen.

Just got my 74 Safré Custom Camper Riviera going. Going to be towing my 65 ghia with the van down to the beach to camp for a few days. Park the 74 van and set up the side tent and then cruise around town in the ghia.

Need to do this job on my '78. Gears are really hit-and-miss. All good though. As I was watching I was contemplating digging an inspection pit. :-) Think I'll be spending a bit of time under my Bay.
