Thanks for watching our VW California Detachable Tow bar Review - We add a Westfalia detachable tow bar to our 2019 Volkswagen California Beach.
We decided, in order to be able to use a tow bar mounted bike rack, to Retro fit the Westfalia Detachable tow bar to our 2019 VW California Beach T6.
The Westfalia Tow Bar is the same system as the OEM system that Volkswagen would fit themselves if you ordered direct from the factory. We decided after taking delivery of our California Campervan that a tow bar would be a good idea for a bike rack (see separate video), therefore we opted to have the tow bar retro fitted by a specialist.
The quality and versatility of the installation is great, hopefully this video will help you make a decision if you are looking to do the same.

Top tip from many years of using these tow bars. When storing the detachable part, wrap the greasy ball lock section in a food bag or similar. It will stop the ball lock getting gritty when stored, and prevent the inside of the black storage bag getting greasy and sliming up the rest of the tow bar.

I never understood why the California had the bike rack up on the tailgate it's very awkward lifting bikes up to it.The towbar mounted bike rack is just so much easier and you won't do your back in putting bikes on it.

Hi Steve, no we didn't fit ourselves. I had a towbar technician install it for me at home. It took him about three hours and he had all the kit required to program so all the software works properly. Hi there, thanks for watching. I had a local specialist fit it at my home. He did a great job, using the genuine parts and cost around £650 fitted.

Did he program the the van that a tow bar at has been fitted? I think I might have to go your route with the bike rack aswell as I have made a box for two e-bikes I don’t want on display and I don’t think the Mrs will be able to lift it onto a Vw bike rack.

@@MrAirborne144 Yep, when you engage reverse with the hitch in use, when something is plugged into the bar electrics/socket it knows to deactivate the rear parking sensors. The much easier access to a lower bike rack was a key factor in us switching to to the towbar mounted setup.

I watch all your stuff for information and inspiration! I am probably the worst California owner in the world as I have had it nearly 3 years and I have done less than 10000 miles. I did take it to Arnhem for the 75th anniversary of market garden.... a bridge to far... fame and that is where I got over-taken by on old lady on an e-bike... I got to get one of them! And that is how I have ended up getting a new bike rack system!

@@MrAirborne144 🤣🤣🤣we had a similar thing in the Loire valley this summer, overtaken by a pensioner on an e-bike with a dog as a passenger in a basket, funny and humiliating in equal measure. Hope you enjoy the videos and Thanks for watching ! JT
