This is a basic tour around our 1979 VW Type 2 late bay camper van in baby blue. It’s an original Devon conversion. The interior is all original. It’s a pop top camper with a 2 litre air cooled ‘pancake’ engine.
We have fitted a 180 watt solar panel to the roof which charges a 100Ah 12v gel deep cycle leisure battery which powers the fridge and a couple of USB and cigarette lighter sockets. Another leisure battery in the engine bay powers the interior lights, radio and water tap, and this charges off the alternator though a traditional split charge system.

That was a very good video. Thank you. We’re about 20% into a full renovation of a 77 2ltr and we like looking at videos such as this to give us continuing motivation and ideas for the interior.

Fantastic van you have there, I miss my 1974 VW T2 camper. It was the best vehicle out of all the other stuff I've had.

Ok, this will do for a while. 😃 I genuinely miss your backpacking videos: not much talking or product placement, very relaxing and sometimes encouraging. Maybe film an overnighter with this beautiful van sometime :)

It just pushes up and stays there Mat. It was refurbished and fitted with new canvas 3 years ago by a company in the north east called ‘proud to pop’. They did a good job.

@@SummitandCamp Hi the pop top canvas looks great. I have just bought a van and was concerned that the pop top didn't 'click' to stay open. Your advice is reassuring. I have just taken it for a drive and we did some hills and it struggled - do you have any advice of how to drive it up hill? Thanks

Just take a good run up ! Ours is a 2 litre so it’s got plenty of punch. Some of the smaller engines can be a bit underpowered. If that’s the case then upgrading the ignition coil, carbs, air cleaner and using premium fuel might help.

how id the mpg on the 2.0 litre? Lovely van!

It’s v thirsty. Less than 20mpg I’d say. It also had a large single carb with a long inlet manifold so I’m sure the efficiency could be improved with a different carb set up.
