OLD BOSCH condensers were silver in color had a deeply stamped number in them the new Bosch has is Gold coated color and has a weekly stamped number on them. The quality is not even close to the old bosch to the new.
FYI like Oreilly Auto parts has points and condensers. But most of the crap you buy wont even last a minute. or will fail at any time. Some people are having bad out of the box points and condensers. FYI. they have them but not bosch So I cant rely on the crap from the parts stores. The empi distributor or pointless pickup is as good as any other brand IMO. I also carry a spare set of points and condenser or pointless module in my car just in case it fails.
An expert in old Beetle engine one time he told me to not roll the condenser green cable like a twist spiral shape. This makes the current goes in a different way and the condenser last few month. I listen to him and never have that problem again
I had the old bosch condensers with twisted wire for years and never had issues. Your lucky. IMO get a pointless and problem solved . I have 6 air cooled and no more issues.
condenser is a common problem. That is why I go pointless now. I have had a pointless fail. but not as often as the condenser. When the pointless fails it just stops working or starts backfiring. The Empi ones are not terrible and pretty cheap. all have random failures Petronix or compufire or empi are all the same IMO. think they just rebox them
you have to match your coil you do not just put a condenser in it they are rater in mfd's a certain value fits you eng not just any cond wrong one will cause all sorts tbl
@Mikefngarage I have a condenser hack for those who need it. I splice TWO condensers together and it seems to work to get me by until I can get to a parts store to replace it. Have you ever tried this or heard of this?
yea thanks for guys who just want to reference that good point. I had to put the other stuff in that video just because so many people need to know that stuff as well.
these condensers are rated in mfd's your cond must match the coil if its wrong it cause the points to pit f in doubt check factory manual for correct part # this a quick test witheng at idle speed pull a sparkwire off insert screw driver in wire hold close to eng hw far will it jump over 1/2 inch is good 1/8 is bad ------wrong condenser another test check points if they are pitting wrong condeser
@@Mikefngarage I purchased a Bosch Condenser a few days ago from Auto One home In Australia. The body of the condenser is silver and it has made in Turkey on the box. It has a decently thick gauge wire as well. The Bosch points I got from Autobahn say made in Russia. There was a Chinese gold electroplate one on there that failed.
Interesting.. Good condensers are incredibly cheap and readily available. Not a lot of qualitative issues since they are just foil electrostatic devices. I’d be much more concerned about your car burning to the ground. Get the fuel filter out of your engine compartment! No barbs on the ends, plastic and sitting next to the distributor leaking tremendous amounts of static electricity. #1 Cause of engine fires!
have you tried measuring the cap with an esr and capacity tester? im curious what size this cap is. i do this test alone by locking the rubber cap of the HV calbe close to ground and rotating the alternator with a spanner.
no only the spark test and it is pretty accurate. Most of these new condensers are inferior quality compared to the old bosch ones. you can use a spanner to turn the motor over with the key on to test very easy like you say with hv cable off close to ground.
That’s exactly how my Fiat 500 has its fuel filter. The battery is right next to the fuel filler cap under the bonnet too. Don’t think safety was of prime importance when it was made 😳.
I have heard of more than 30k cars with fuel filter in that position and never had an engine fire. All carb cars had plastic fuel filters ine engine compartment back in the day. No issues. all in your head.
@@Mikefngarage My fuel filter is in the same spot too. I just purchased a nice alloy clamp and aluminum body filter to replace the Ryco plastic one. More for better looks than anything else.
Spark color. buddy Gotta listen. But honestly I dont go there anymore Points and condensers off the shelf are seriously crap. you could also go compufire. But I have seen just as many bad ones of theirs as empi at half the price.
