VW has finally launched the production version of the all electric ID.3 hatchback and seems like it'll be a great EV... just not one that anybody in the US can buy.

VW is not realy the "batch-production" manufacturer. Americans just buy other everyday cars as Europeans. If VW would want to make a competitive offer on the US marked, the car would have to be built in Mexico, USA or Canada and massproduced. There is just not the demand in the USA. Yet there is hope, as if you have looked at the rear hatch, the taillights are not fixed to the hatch as it would be the reasonable way to place them for a European car! The gone so far to cut out parts of the hatch, for apparently no good reason, just to make it uglier. I'm pretty sure the only reason you would do it is to please USA-car provisions. So Maybe they did it to be prepared just in case the Golf-class of cars suddenly catches on in the USA . From my European perspective, I think the taillights realy belong fixed to the hatch...and the cutouts in the hatch look weird! So IMHO this part was designed with the USA in mind.

This will be a very solid and quiet car. I would be interested in Canada at 41,000 CDN after tax, Federal and provincial rebates. The ID Crozz will be more expensive and less efficient, and the base Model 3 here in Canada is $53,600 out the door.
@leafskickass1
@leafskickass1 5 лет назад
$41000 plus tax is $46330 for the base model with the shortest range. Probably freight/delivery fee on top of that. There is no way average Canadian will be buying this car, way too expensive! Definitely out of my price range, too bad cause I like this car.
@glenf4115
@glenf4115 5 лет назад
@@leafskickass1 Assume the car would be $45,000 to qualify for the federal EV grant, and you live in BC. 45K x 12% tax - 5K federal grant, - 3K provincial grant, -5K down payment, -10K trade-in: 45,000 * 1.12 - 5000 - 3000 - 5000 - 10000 = $27,400 If you drive 13K km per year and pay on average 11 cents per kWh and charged 100% at home, borrowed the 27,400 at 4.25% and paid it off over the life of the car (10 years) including $2,725 in electricity, $4,000 maintenance and $6,223 interest it would cost you $336.24 per month. Assuming you currently have a BMW 328i that is paid off and you drive 13K per year, your maintenance + Fuel per month would be the same, around $300 per month. If you drive a large SUV like an X5 35i and it is paid off, the average cost is around $400 per month.

How are EVs going to take off if they only sell them in a few states and cars like the ID3 aren't even sold here? The ID3 is the VW I'm interested in, not the crossover.

I'm not really saying that VW is making the wrong move here... from a business/financial standpoint, excluding the ID.3 hatchback from their US lineup and bringing over a crossover instead is the right call. It's just personally disappointing because I happen to like cars/hatchbacks and don't have much love for crossovers or SUVs.
@DanFrederiksen
@DanFrederiksen 5 лет назад
Model 3 is kinda doing ok. But ID3 might be subject to 10% import so unless they make it in USA it's protetty understandable. That said, I'm European, I have high disdain for murican obese mindlessness and I don't care about the stagnant thinking ID3. Forced into an old working class hatchback format is a celebration of their obtuseness. I'd never buy one over a base 3. That said, Tesla should make a Model 2 post haste. Similar to 3, just leaner and cheaper. Model 3 is just better than S, 2 could be similarly more spritely. It's important for Tesla to not leave a gap for the mindless old garde to push their junk.

Given a choice, I would drive a sports car or compact sedan any day for my daily driving. Only when I need the carrying capacity would I willingly drive a van or SUV. So... no ID.3 for North America? Instead we get another space-wasting bloody SUV? To say I'm disappointed doesn't get close to what I'm feeling. Piss on it. If I would have to be stuck with an SUV, I'll stick with ICE. At least I can still get a good-handling hot hatch. I'd just rather be going electric.
@joebloggs5629

Don’t worry, it’ll come with time (& charging stations) - I drive a hot hatch (VW) and see no real reason to jump ship straight away, in just about everything the first generation/s are to pay off the production costs

Considering the US is one of the countries that polute the most per capita, all this dieselgate whuuuhoo shit is BS. If any of you watch car racing and have heard of a 24 hours race called Le Mans, Audi a VW company brand, won it many years in a row, some years ago they gave up this race to focus on Formel E. What is Formel E, well E for electric, get it? So why did they do that, just for fun, or as part of a electric car development programme? It won’t take long for a giant like the VW to catch up to Tesla.

Americans like vehicles with more storage space. Hence the reason why the production version of the ID Crozz is coming to the USA. They've already begun to modify the VW factories in Chattanooga, Tennessee and PUebla, Mexico to accommodate production of this new vehicle. A reason why the ID.3 is limited to Europe for now is the very limited supply of battery packs until some time in 2021.
@AlexVenz
@AlexVenz 5 лет назад
If it was just about storage space, then hatchbacks, wagons, and minivans should be more popular than they currently are.

Thanks for this vid, actually i would love to see the VW ID 3 in the US as well but i guess they had their reasons, the most exciting feature for me is the augmented reality HUD, it will change the way we look at tachometers i think, hence why the ID 3 has such a small tachometer. Interest in the US electric car maker was repeatedly said giants like Apple or Google. But according to a new article by Manager Magazine, it could be the Volkswagen Group, which helps the deficient US car maker.

@AlexVenz
@AlexVenz 4 года назад
I thought that was odd as well. Probably a move by the bean counters.
@AOTanoos22
@AOTanoos22 4 года назад
Win-Win situation, most of the braking power will be done by the front disc brakes or by recuperation. Rear brakes tend to rust or corrode because they get barely used on small and light EV's. So using a drum brake is cheaper for the costumer and the brand because it basically needs no maintenance and is cheaper for the brand to produce and the customer to buy.
@AlexVenz
@AlexVenz 4 года назад
I wouldn't exactly call the ID.3 light given that, according to Road & Track, it's heavier than a standard range Model 3. Also, many cars have slightly rear-biased braking for stability reasons (though, the fronts are still doing most of the work from an energy conversion standpoint) and the rears get used for both stability control and simulating a limited slip diff in an open diff RWD configuration (if VW is doing that).
@useaol
@useaol 4 года назад
@@AlexVenzMaybe they can get away with doing that due to most of the braking could be accomplished by regen? Leaving the drums to do a eLSD diff like you mentioned? Would love to know their decisions on doing so. Weight? Cost? Friction (pads vs shoes)? Less hardware for emergency brakes?
@AOTanoos22
@AOTanoos22 4 года назад
Alex Venz I have to partially disagree, the Model 3 is light as well but with 1720kg the ID 3 is still a relatively light car for EV's. No road production car has rear-biased breaking systems. In every car the front brakes are at least the same size as the rear ones or bigger than the rear brakes, no car has bigger rear brakes than front ones, it's simple physics since when you drive (not in reverse) and brake the weight of the car will be pushed to the front and the front brakes will do most of the Work. Yes the rear brakes get used for stability control etc. but you really don't need more braking performance than what drum brakes can offer giving the recuperation system on EV's, I guess we will see how they will perform though.

Self fulfilling prophecy. When all you make are CUVs of course your market data shows all people buy are CUVs. Mean while Tesla dominates with sedans. Because people don't by sedans. Or something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The fact that VW is not willing to offer choice in the US tells me they are not serious in that market.
