Changing the timing belt on my Mk1 Jetta GLi was even easier - no power steering and no A/C to contend with. Absolutely one of the easiest timing belts to change in the industy. Worst part for me was removing the hex bolts on the pulleys. Almost 40 years of rust will do that. I replaced mine with new ones. Changing the timing belt on my brother's 2005 Honda Civic was a PITA. You had to remove the motor mount and support the engine, as the mount runs through the timing belt cover. Why Honda WHY? BTW - I like your method of marking the timing belt - that ensures you have the proper cog spacing when you slide the new belt on. I'm going to do that next time around. Great video as always Oli - Cheers!

Oh wow, yes that would make it super easy! The my 2003 Jetta is similar to the Honda; one has to remove the motor mount to change the belt...this is why I have a timing belt still in a box and an unchecked task of "Jetta timing belt" on my list haha. Thank you for the kind words :)

Just about to do this on my friend's '97 1.3 it does not have that timing disc but oddly the PS/AC belts disconnected. Thank you Oli for your informative video! Dave SA

Another awesome DIY. I've only done a few 4cyl belts over the years and I'd for sure need this video to get me through :D

I'm surprised you didn't do the water pump. Whenever I had the timing belt done I was always sold a water pump since everything was apart. Nice job. Happy Holidays.
@Tristanwendt
@Tristanwendt 7 месяцев назад
The water pump on these doesn’t run off the timing belt like on a lot of other cars. The water pumps are easy to get at without removing too many things.
@walterbutscher8438
@walterbutscher8438 7 месяцев назад
@Tristanwendt I am aware this is not my first vw just makes sense since you are right there with all the covers and belts of it just makes sense. Why would you put it all back together and risk a water pump failure when everything is buttoned up and put together just to tear everything down again. Just a suggestion or a curiosity. Whenever I did a timing belt it just made sense to do the water pump it's a 30 dollar part.

I agree that it would have been smart to do at the same time. Normally I would do it at the same time, especially because of how old all of these parts are now.

Hi Oli, Thanks again for a great video, I finally know what the top marking is thanks to you. I did send the information a while back (a year or less) regarding the the book I have. Did you receive it?

What if the last owner of the car didn’t replace the belt soon enough and it broke ? Impossible to transfer the 3 points/marks onto the new belt. Can you crank it into TDC , put a new belt on and then adjust the timing ? Thanks for your time.
@OlisGarage
@OlisGarage 5 месяцев назад
Then just put everything to TDC and slip on a new belt. Then look at my timing video to get the distributor set perfectly.

What engine? And maybe. It should be riding in the middle of all pulleys.

Hello oli, when I go to tension my belt it always skip out of time slightly. Any way to fix this ?
@OlisGarage
@OlisGarage 14 дней назад
@@zachhannum6498 how do you mean it skips out of time? Yes things will turn ever so slightly. As long as the crank and cam are set, then the distributor gets adjusted later

@@OlisGarageSo currently my flywheel dot is lined up, cam is lined up with valve cover. When I go to tension the belt the dot on the flywheel either moves forward a little or back a little which no longer lines up with the mark. 1982 Rabbit Pickup 1.7L
@OlisGarage
@OlisGarage 14 дней назад
@@zachhannum6498 is it a tooth off? Or less? If it’s a tooth off, then readjust the belt. If it’s less than a tooth off, then that is just the slight slop/error in the system and there is nothing to be done.

Hey Oli, great video as always. At the start you said this was applicable for vehicles with a 1.8 or 2.0L engine, does that mean the process would be different for my 1984 1.6? You also said these aren't interference engines, is that just for the 1.8 and 2.0 or also the 1.6? Thanks man!

Do you by chance know the engine code? Funny enough, we never got the smaller displacement engines in the USA so my knowledge kind of stops with those. But I have a mk1 repair book from Germany that I can look in!

@@OlisGarage Sorry forgot to mention it's also a mk2, but maybe they're the same, like the 1.8s. My engine code is EZ, but I'm pretty sure they didn't make mk1s with the EZ
