This is my 5 day build of a Volkswagen transporter T5 van Kombi bed. There are many Kombi bed option already available, but there were a couple of things that annoyed me with the designs so I decided to build my own... in 5 days 👍

what a range of nice projects you keep yourself busy with! Technic lego, walking robots, 3D printing and now a VW van... I slept on the backseat of a (non-camper) T5 once, it was (Dutch) summer, but still it was a really cold metal box, so i didnt sleep very well. curtains/isolation would make a difference.

Very nice solution and build! I recommend drilling some holes into the plywood otherwise the mattress will pick up moisture.

Thanks. I was going to have the plywood slotted to reduce weight but the cost was prohibitive. I haven’t noticed any moisture yet.. other conversions I’ve seen have solid bases. Have you experienced moisture with this setup? Presumably because the base can’t breath.

Fantastic build. I've always wanted to build a custom 3/4 width bed that doesn't need to hold passengers while driving.

Lovely work by any chance could you provide dimensions/ plan for the feet and what company you used to get them? also what is the height from floor to underside of tubing is it 600mm?

All made by myself. I think dimension is about 600 but can’t remember for sure.

Hey mate. Great work. Do you think it would be possible to use an existing combi bed and make it slide in itself twice. So you could reduce the size of it when in transit and put the rear seats further back? My thoughts were to cut frame and put in a second sliding rail with the legs on so that all slided forward when using the bed? Obviously it's just a thought and I am not a metal guy so thought I'd ask yourself you clearly has ALOT of skills 👍 any advice greatly received. Mark

Hi, I'm fine with it but no it's not high enough for sitting. You'd need to lower the frame and loses packing space underneath

Cut some holes in the ply bed base, to reduce weight and ventilate the mattress to prevent invisible mould growth. Could you have used aluminium to reduce weight or is it too pricey?

Could have used aluminium to reduce weight but also it’s harder to weld so I went with steel. I would like to make an aluminium version though. I didn’t add slots to the bed ply to reduce cost.

Hi Matt Really nice design on your bed system, I’m looking at a similar project, but using 8020 type extruded aluminium to reduce the frame weight, do you know what weight your design is please, and do you think the 8020 is worth using in place of box section Great channel 👊🏻

Hi. Thanks. Well 8020 is very strong. You might find 6020 is enough. I really don’t remember what weight mine is but I have considered doing one with Alu extrusion to save weight.

Hi Matt lI really like the design and particularly the wider leg position utilising space- I'm wondering whether its possible to do something similar but for a LWB using sliders on both sides giving the option of a double bed over the seats leaving space at the rear or sliding all the way back enabling the seats to be left up. Does that sound impossible or doable?

I’m not sure you could slide in both directions as the fix down points are right at the back of the van.

I don’t remember the name but they have three on the range, made for folding bed. They fold two thirds of the way down.

Looks really good. You should really put som carriage boltss under the mattress instead of a normal hex bolt.

No it comes with a fold about two thirds of the length.
