In this video we take you through the process of fitting an unbranded pop top roof to a T5 van as part of our camper van conversion series.
Our roof was supplied by Caledonia Campers - but the same roof is available from a number of outlets and on e-bay - and consisted of everything required to complete the installation including:
- Main fibreglass roof panel - ready carpeted on the inside with scissor hinges, all hardware and canvas with front window fitted
- Front (over cabin) roof brace
- Rear strengthening bar
- Side strengthening bars x 2
- Plastic canvas attachment pieces
- Fibreglass front trim piece
- Fibreglass side trim pieces x 2
- All hardware to complete
The video covers the complete process from start to finish and is presented for information only.
Please note that my roof came without any instructions and that I have completed the installation based on my learned experience of how best to do this in order to make it easier for anyone else considering the process with the same/similar roof.
It’s an involved process - and not for the faint hearted - but if approached methodically, like most tasks in the conversion can be completed by anyone with even modest skills. Just take your time, be safe, measure twice and take your time. You could save a lot of money and end up with a great pop top as I believe I have.
Best Wishes
N

Hahaha. The more holes you cut, the easier it gets and the more you want to cut! Stay safe. N

We are wondering to buy a t5 to convert to a camper with the wifey, but with the rules here in Finland we have to havea 120 wide bed. And if we install that, the kitchonery have to be so small. But if we get a roof top for your price it wouldnt be any problems. It would cost 7-10k£ to have a top roof in Finland.😢

It would certainly be cheaper and easier in the U.K.! Best wishes. N

Awesome video! How is it holding up now? Do you loose a lot of heat when it's down, can you insulate it? And what is it like when up and it's a bit windy?

Many thanks. We’ve just toured the North Highlands and it was great! The black van as doesn’t look as good as the lighter colours from the outside but it’s much more practical attracting heat and keeping out light. It handles the wind very well but I do tend to drop it on very windy nights. A real bargain at this price and enjoyed doing it myself. May have felt different if the starting point was a £60k van but no regrets!

where did you buy the roof? and could you please send me a link of the site? thanks!

Hi, we bought the roof on-line through an advert on FB marketplace. The company was called kilted campers but I can’t find a link to them any more. Our roof is unbranded however - and is sold by lots of different independent companies via marketplace and E-bay. If you find a link share it with me and I’ll confirm if it’s the same roof. Best wishes. N

My hinges look identical to yours but don't line up with any holes is there a measurement from rear end of roof ?
@highergroundlifestyle
@highergroundlifestyle Год назад
Nick, I put a diagram in the video of all the dimensions I recorded. By my reckoning, on a SWB the roof sits 450mm back from the front window and 250mm forward of the inside of the rear doors. This dimension is 370mm on a LWB. Can’t be sure we have the same roof of course! I’d measure the distance between all the holes on the scissor hinges off the van and see which two are the same distance apart as the existing holes in the roof. That’s probably the safest start! Cheers. N

Where can I get the plastic strips to fit canvas to roof can I use any plastic ?
@highergroundlifestyle

Nick, any kind of plastic extrusion will work - as long as it’s robust enough to be drilled and able to be moulded to shape for the ribbed section using a little heat. Your local DIY store or specialists plastics supplier should be able to help. Cheers. N
