I like it better than the X7. Tics all the boxes with less pretense. Never cared much for Touareg (We call it a “Tour Egg” in the southern USA-sorry) until this model year. Very impressive effort from VW. I hope they keep innovating.

The new Touareg looks stunning especially with the impressive R-Line exterior package! Overall the Touareg is the best looking SUV in its class!🔝 The structure of the “Innovision Cockpit” seems to be very logical and self-explaining even if there are sadly no buttons left for the climate control.👍 Thank you VW for offering big and befitting engines like the V6 petrol/diesel, V8 diesel(! - later) and for not using fake exhaust pipes at this beautiful SUV.🙏👏

Great video! Still don't like the new Touareg face with too much chrome. That noise at 5:22, diesel ready for the farms :( At 9:22 we can also see how all-TFT isnt great for sun glares and readability. At 12:22 the unit is already laggy to show seat adjustments :( 13:48... Are the 4 wheel height adjustable independently?? Or SYNC should just read AUTO. Can't wait for the TFSI and PHEV powertrains

Beautiful interior. Would have given it 10/10 if it wasn’t for the steering wheel! Cmon VW. A beautiful innovative interior design ruined by a 2015 Tiguan steering wheel!

That engine I agree is not the best a little too noisy and doesn't sound smooth, i think the plugin hybrid will fare better in terms of quite ride. Great review!!

Love VW. Hope the Touareg comes to India. Btw the Holiday Inn at ~27 min is where I had stayed 5 yrs back. I recall gaping at the new Skoda Octavia at the showroom on that street, right next to the hotel! ✌🏾

I really like it. Turbo lag interests me, I have found if you are used to driving a petrol motor you may have problems with turbo lag. If on the other hand you are an experienced driver of turbo powered diesels there is a way of using throttle to eliminate the lag you are experiencing. This vehicle could be the odd one, but I don't think so . I'll be ordering one.

Lorna Watters turbo lag occurs when there is insufficient boost produced by the turbo charger. To spool it faster, you need to increase the pressure of the exhaust gases.. Which only happens at higher engine speeds. So, in this scenario, when setting off from standstill, since there is no clutch to slip in a torque converter and you won't be building the rpm by stepping on the brake and throttle at the same time, there is no way to avoid turbo lag. That's just a fact the rules of physics dictate. While driving in the city, no one will build revs and try to launch an suv at every stop light.. So, this lag will persist.

Great review AJ. The Touareg 3 looks more imposing - and bigger than a 2016 Short Wheel Base Tiguan Mk2 - including a much bigger and more imposing grill! Shame about AJ's test car's 'laggy' engine. Thanks for all the interesting info.

After the arteon (at least from the exterior) vw designed this new touareg really greatly. It is the first vw that has a beautiful and modern interior design. However, besides the fact that it can be loaded with a lot of technologies almost all of them are optional and configuring a touareg with at least some of them (not full extra) will make it more expensive than a Q7. Also the position of the central air vents down from the big screen is an ergonomic fault. At least for me. I hope that this design language will be carried over to the future models

One question: does the rear window go all the way down? Also, has VW abandoned the true off-road variant of this car altogether? It originally was a rock climbing beast with mid and rear lockers. Finally, I think this car should have the standard "knob" dash and leave the wide display as a option. I don't like asymmetrical.

Nice review although some repetition that wasn’t really required but not that much of an issue, this new Touareg is very very nice, almost preferable to the Q7 in some respects. The dashboard looks fantastic but as with all touch based systems it comes with pluses and minuses, the rest of the interior is great. Motor sounds a little disappointing, I would hope that gets addressed as the lag is horrendous. Styling I like, much much better than the out going model that was getting pretty stale. Over all it’s an excellent effort, I’d wait for the V8, wouldn’t consider the hybrid even slightly, the V6 petrol might possibly be a starter just as long as the consumption wasn’t huge, could live with average of 11-13 litres per hundred.

Rear end is perfect, the best looking of all the siblings (Cayenne, Bentayga, Q7, Touareg, Urus). The front has way too much chrome, as usually with VW. But the front looks a ton better in the R-Design in combination with the Black Style package (black parts instead of chrome).

AJ, as always great job! But let me make one remark. A significant delay at start 30:31 (turbo lag as you describe it) has been done intentionaly by manufacturer in order to prolong a gearbox service life. Otherwise an enormous torque of V6 Diesel engine at low rpm can simply kill your gearbox and break down some other stuff (сrankshaft) very easily.

The engine kinda reminds me of the one used in the AUDI A4 a year or two ago which also had a giant lag in the low gears... caused a colleague of mine to almost get into an accident because the car wouldn't want to go over the crossing

Left foot on brake - build up revs, release break - turbo lag solved from a stand still. Otherwise it’s just the character of the engine - can’t be that bad as it’s used in A6 50 TDI etc

Yankeefr78 Yankeefr78 thanks for the feedback. I think these two are very different suvs designed to do different things. The disco is certainly more capable off-road. Plus, you can get that optionally with 7 seats. It's also larger and has more space inside. However, on-road mannerisms of the touareg is much better. it feels more composed around corners than the disco. they are both comfortable with air suspension. The disco feels bigger and has a higher seating position. It's also a bit more tricky to drive in traffic, no rear axle steering either. The touareg is a good option, but this engine was a bit disappointing. The disco had a better engine. Depends on which one you pick though

Great review AJ! I can't believe I'm going to say this but, I like the up and coming VW Atlas cross sport design more than the Touareg. The cross sport just seems to be sharper and more unique. The 3rd gen Touareg is quite conservative. Although, that 2L TSI PHEV sounds like a more reasonable system than the 3.6L PHEV that the Cross sport is going to come with. Seems kind of odd putting a huge 3.6L engine in a PHEV system. (However, VW says the 3.6L PHEV can do 40km on electric only. ) Those LED matrix lights are incredible. Wow, I'm not sure why NA governments are dragging their feet in approving these over here.

The Atlas and the Touareg are in 2 different categories to me. I prefer the conservativeness in the Touareg with the V8 or the 3.0 V6 TFSI motor. Just my preference. Atlas is just way too big for what I would want and to me, is not as practical as the Touareg.

I have a current Touareg 3.0TDI as well as the latest v6 Amarok....what a difference between the 2, even though they have the same engine and transmission. Amarok goes like a Lamborghini, Touareg goes like a Trabbant Amarok v6 is fast, linear and very responsive on throttle....very satisfying...a pleasure to drive with paddle shift. Touareg is the complete opposite, though luxurious, its frustrating to drive under low power, not enough low-end response - turbo lag....etc...so very disappointing.....and so very dangerous to drive, when you need power to move ITS NOT THERE. Commentator said it all with latest car.....easy to fall in love with the car but the overriding problem is power delivery....same old problem...hope petrol version is better. TOUAREG A CAR WITH AN IDENTITY CRISIS VW SHOULD KEEP THE PURPOSE OF THE TOUAREG SIMPLE.....KEEP IT ON ROAD....LOOSE 200KG....PADDLE SHIFT ....LINEAR ACCELERATION....let it compete with its rivals VW

Autogefühl leather was used for seats of carriage riders back in the days because it was cheaper then cloth and easier to keep clean, so you pay more to be seated like a low class citizen... (I like carriages no offense to anyone riding them now :D )

The delay in acceleration observed is not turbo lag, it is gearing.. you can see the gears switch down slowly and down again, before it takes of. Quite the error for a journalist to make, I think

Great review. Loving the Austrian countryside, absolutely stunning view. Sadly we here in America no longer get the Touareg. Instead we get the Atlas. Not to say the Atlas is ugly or anything. For some reason I seem to like the Touareg more. Curious, which one do you folks enjoy more?

That night vision camera is awesome. So useful, especially in places with lots of deer or kangaroos. Too bad VW chose to stop bringing the Touareg to the states with this generation.

Awesome review and location! This is a nice car but the concept of the front grill horizontal blades to be in line with the parallel blades of the headlights, is a failure itself, cos at any slight shock of these plastic elements the continuity between the grill and the lights horizontal feeling will be lost! and the car face will look very ugly very soon after buying it, it reminds me of the Renault 12 same concept lights and grill and how rarely we were seeing a perfect "Renault 12 calandre" Lol :)))

A great review for a very nice car. I don’t understand why VW still giving TDI engines to car journalists. The engine sounds awful. On top of that, the world still didn’t forget the TDI scandal. Also, why piano black trim used in an Off-Roader. This material only exists to collect dust and scratches like a magnet.

GPO I personally care about the environment and I consider my self a normal person 😄. I know this issue because of some political background is exploded a bit more than it should be but it is still considered as a scandal.

Ahmed Abd El-Moaty well co2 is food for the trees. Should we try to put out all active volcanos in the world too? A small gas/petrol car is more eco friendly than a tesla.

GPO I understand your point of view. I know battery or even leather production could be very pollutant as well, but cheating still a big mistake even if I know that most companies are doing such things because of how hard the competition is nowadays.VW itself is rapidly pushing toward electric car because of the TDI bad image. It makes sense to launch a new beautiful car with a hybrid engine. This TDI engine sounds like a Tank. In my opinion, it is not fitting this beautiful car at all.
