I'm new to all this. This video has been very helpful but a bit too technical for me. I'm trying to figure what is the best tire and engine combination for a 6 rib trans. Do I keep it 14 stock tires or 15 will work best? Big and Small nut?
The Germans had it all figured out. Pre '67 had 4.37 final. Fan speed is the factor since no benefit from front end air flow. Stock is rock in my world.
Well those old trans were just too low of gears for freeway use. Car was originally built for city driving so 4.37 is outdated. I upgrade them to the 412. Early split case was 4.37 with .82 4th and they do OK on the freeway about the same or better than 412 89
Hey Mike, Very informative video. Here in Australia it's very hard to get a good transmission. I've been burnt once. But I've also been quoted up to $12,000 Aus for a 63 bug box. It's certainly is nuts. So thanks for sharing ✌️ from Melbourne Australia.
im frm mlaysia ..i put bug transmission to my early bus with original reduction gear box. My cant go more 55 60 mph ...after ur this video i understand why..thanks buddy
Question for you Mike, if I have a 73 Super Beetle, I want to put a Freeway Flyer in it. but I have 135R15 in the front which shouldn't make a difference, the rear has 145R15. should I still try to put in a 3.88 ring and pinion? or should I look at something else? Thanks for your help.
I got most of my transmission internals from Weddle Industries.. Not cheap, but have had 0 problems. 3.88 r&p .77 4th. Billet side covers, Rhino case on a Big nut GRB bus.Great info on the transmissions, thank you Mike.
I have a '69 Italian Spec Single Cab. I am running a 1914 in it with the stock trans. I installed General Grabber 27 x 8.50 R14 LT tires on it. They are noticeably taller tires and I can run it at 100km/h on the clock which is about 62 Mp/h with no problem. I've had it to 110 km/h and it is not screaming, but I only max it out at the 62 mp/h range. The tires helped out a lot. I get a mini rub on the tires when I am fully locked left or right and only when in reverse.
You need not swap ring and pinion here because this trans is already in the rear. The swap is often done on front wheel drive to be used in rear mount.configuration.
The problem with Chinese stuff is it's a lottery. Quality Control is not always great and their sales are based on manufacturing output volume. So even if maybe 10 or 15 percent of their output is not up to scratch they are still making a profit. I've bought a lot of Chinese stuff for my bug over the years and never really had an issue, but others have a different experience. Its a gamble.
yea for sure. Pulling a trans is a bit of work. best to know what your getting. I gamble too and sometimes it pays. sometimes not. but everyone should know what they are paying for.
Good info, Mike. I keep hearing Berg say 'don't over gear your VW, you'll cook the heads!' Taking leverage away from the engine and all that, but I guess everyone has different experiences. My Westy has a 3.88 Rancho with 1.26 boxes and .82 fourth; cruises nice with that combo.
I have had that before but the 3.44 or 3.88 .77 is really good too. all have plenty of air flow. Remember you had late bugs with 3.88 89 dog house and no issues with running hot. Just dont go 3.44 with 89 in a bug that would be a problem. I have no overheat or running hot with 3.44 89 which is a little higher than the 3.88 82. Get 22mpg highway in a splitty that way. runs super cool too.
This is very informative and a little over my head. I bought a hull of a 69 bay that had the original tranny in it, I purchased a 1600 dual port that is punched to 1914. The fellow who built my engine has several decades of vw experience and he said the transmission was in good shape. The original wheels are 14 inches and I kept them. Top speed for it is 50 to 55 before the engine begins to sing. Would taller tires help? Again, thanks for all you do.
Yes Get some of those off road style ones it will be a huge improvement. Even if you dont like the look it will improve drivability. Check the links in the description. Compared to doing a trans upgrade. If you want to go that direction check KCR in Riverside.
Those chineese R&P, i had 3 sets in my bug transmission!! All had a really bad wining/wine. Transmission guy was blaming me for having uherane mounts at the end. But lucky he found a nos RP set in Germany put that in and no wining noise at all. So be careful guys. They work fine but wine like hell
'58 bus running a 1776 with the original split case trans. 205/75R15 tires as tall as i can go. Happiest at 50mph, and screaming at 55. How could I get to 65mph max?
Mike as always very informative and learned a lot from this post! Thanks Matt 58 Dove blue SingleCab. I need to ask you more info, next time I see you at OCTO. Great videos as always.
