I would also highly recommend pulling the oil pan. Alot of the time the guide material will find its way into the oil pickup tube and could restrict oil flow to the pump.

Much respect, MacGyver!! No helper... puts battery on brake pedal. 9:28 - The satisfying moment of pulling off that lower-engine cover!! For those of you who haven't done this yet: Follow Vijuel's lead and label things, ESPECIALLY THE ENGINE/TRANNY BOLTS! Good video shots of the chain - there's a little sag in there at the TOP. I was concerned about that but my engine runs better than it ever has. I don't know if adjusting the cam sprockets a bit would take the sag out but screw up the timing. I just left well-enough alone. Got lucky with the tranny. Tried once, no joy, second time it slid right on. (Ave Maria). Wish we could have crowd-sourced you a new clutch while you were in there. Nice, nice work.

When removing the axle flange bolts, it's best to stick an old but tough screw driver in the rotor slots above the caliper so the rotor locks up and wont turn when you break the bolts loose! Saves you from having to block the brake pedal.

My 2001 GTI has 110k miles. Not looking forward to doing this when its due. I thought about doing the clutch at the same time since it is such a big job. Access is tight and thinking also about pulling the entire engine out might be easier to access the transmission.
@MrWoowootila

Thats a good point. I could bring it to a shop and have it evacuated and then take the front end off. Maybe replace the dryer and a/c clutch pulley bearing, and a/c hoses while I am in there. Hopefully I only have to pull the transmission once in the life of the car.

Yo, I have a question. I have a 12 valve vr6 and I’m doing the timing chain on it but on the middle shaft where the two sprockets meet why is my Top Dead Center, Mark pointing up opposed to yours pointing down I am so confused right now and I wanna know the difference between the two motors if they are
@Vijuel
@Vijuel Месяц назад
@user-th5mp3bw5p same motor. The 24valve is noticeably different. As far as the direction of the pointer, if I recall, it can point either direction opposite to itself, but I'm not 100% on that. If that's how it was when you opened it up, I would just reverse engineer it ad it was if you didn't have an issue before.

What work did you need to do with the throttle body during this job? Was it removed from the intake manifold or were the two removed as one assembly? If the two were separated, did you clean the butterfly valve? Did the throttle body need to be mapped after the car was put back together? Also, since the whole job was done almost 4 years ago, can you give us an update on how reliable the car has been, specifically regarding the maintenance you performed? Good work. I need to do the same to my GTI.
@Vijuel
@Vijuel 4 года назад
i believe it was in one piece. the car ran fine till last winter i had an oil pressure problem and stopped driving it after one night i got the light turn on. it was sitting since then and i started driving my other jetta. just a few days ago i started it up and it had no oil pressure light. so ultimately, it had no timing chain issues since i did this job. i started the car again because i'm moving out of state and have to do something with it. i wanted to take it with me and make it my daily driver again but it will cost too much for an auto transporter so i will have to get rid of it asap within a few days. maybe give it away to someone... other than that, it's a 20 year old car so a lot of other stuff is worn on it, a/c, heater, suspension, brake system.. nothing critical, but just old at this point with new england weather and use.

@luisc5214

The VR6 is such a bullet proof engine though honestly and worth it for the power and exhaust note. The only thing that really REALLY sucks about working on the is the timing chain..... and the occasional thermostat housing and crack pipe and water pump going out after 150k or so miles.

@@Vijuel how can you tell your timing is off ?
@Vijuel
@Vijuel 2 года назад
@@vrtxs1938 if the timing is off you will have all types of problems, back firing, stutters and it will not run correctly. what starts to fail is the timing chain guides and it will start to make clacking and ticking noise out of the engine. it may cause your chain to jump from lack of tension and hamstring the cars performance right away and possibly permanently damage your engine. the trick is to catch the warning signs before any of that happens and do a timing chain job to replace the system.

Is it true that the 24v VR6 has a better designed tensioner/timing chain system than the 12v VR6? I've heard rumors that you can usually get more miles out of the 24v motor before having to replace and work on the timing chain. If anyone has any info on this, please comment.
@Vijuel

the chains are usually solid. the guides go out and are the main problem in these systems. not sure about quality between the 2. would be safe to have regular maintenance after 80k

Does it make sense to replace the sprockets too? Is that amazon link for the chain a good replacement? Have you had any issues? Because most chain kits are $200 so ive seen.
@Vijuel
@Vijuel 7 лет назад
no need to change cam sprockets. you should change the clutch tho, while your in there. the amazon link is just to get you there. i believe i got the parts from rockauto.com and ecstuning.com . havent had a problem since i did this. eventually i will have to check the top timing chain guide rail, which can be checked and replaced by just removing the top half of the cover. but no issues as of yet.
@TheGalactus900
@TheGalactus900 7 лет назад
okay. i just replaced the clutch 400 miles ago, and i didnt do the chains while i was in there.. stupid me. So now its time to do them.. Thanks for the video! No amazon timing chains for me though haha

Hate my VR6. Took it to the shop to habe cam shadt positioning sensor changed. They changed it with no fix. Timing was off still. Put old back in. I dont have thousands to fix the damn thing. They said they wont work on the tensioner pulley because they are none for breaking and have to pull the engine out. I only watched a portion of this video and its beyond me and my time to do.
@Vijuel
@Vijuel 5 лет назад
the guides are known to break regardless, they are plastic. yes it is kind of a big job if time, space, tools and experience is an issue. it is not a big deal to do if you have a decent combination of all those tho. the tensioner pulley if you are referring to the serpentine belt is simple to change... if my vr6 makes it to this next summer season i will try to open her up again and refresh all the guides to the timing. a chain drives it, not a belt, so the chance of the chain breaking is slim, but the guides will need occasional service.

how many miles on car when timing chain went out ? looking at a 2001 jetta vr6 nice body leather interior bad timing chain but they re asking $ 1000.00 for it little high in price. great video very helpful
@Vijuel
@Vijuel 7 лет назад
dunno yolo if the timing is bad, it may not be worth it, as the engine may have been damaged. the chain doesn't really break, it's all the guides that break because of what they're made of. should be replaced at 80- 120k to avoid permanent damage

@Vijuel
@Vijuel 7 лет назад
If the car runs as is without timing issues, it may be worth it. Just make sure you service it before adding any more miles to it. But those guides are guaranteed to be brittle and ready to break at the 100k point. This is the 12valve vr6 sohc
