Umm, I think many people lust after i30n , it’s in a different price class than the others, but offers real, world manual gearbox fun. Even covered by factory warranty for track use.
@@evilspiritchild Since 1974, dear Luís! The VW Golf is the model that set the pace in the C segment. Eight generations leading the way and creating the benchmarks for everyone else. GTI, GTD, VR6, V6, TDI, 1.8T 20V, V5, 16V, G 60, R32, TSI, e-Golf, GTE… 4-motion, DSG… Look it up ! Have a nice weekend !
Thing with Megane is that I never really liked the looks before this model which actually is pretty cool. Then again the Hyundai also looks really good in a much more understated way. And then comes the matter of price, which is probably the Hyundai's trump card in the segment.
I have the Megane RS (Cup version), and they are a great drive. I do get annoyed when reviewers bang on about the ride being super-stiff though...because it just isn't!
superflea72 indeed. Im s fresh owner of a 300trophy edc, and its is just awesome. Stiffness isnt really that big of a deal. I owned a mk7gti with dcc and it does as much as no difference to your driving confort. After all, almost everyone who likes their golf’s look mint, put on some h&r, eibach, vogtland springs which makes the car as “stiff” as a cup chassie on megane. Lol
@@SNapRicardo I work in a Hyundai main dealership. We have not seen ANY 'common' problems with the i30N yet, just a few isolated problems which happen with any brand of vehicle.
Most buyers will buy these brand new with warranties, I cant see reliability been a isue here. Yes second hand I can understand but I wouldnt easily buy a hot hatch because of the way people abuse them.
For all you French car haters. Stop going on about reliability!!!! The bottom line is that Renault outperforms VW in the reliability charts too. Just look at carwows most reliable cars. Time to put those old misconceptions where they belong. In the past
@@danielburgin28 you sir are a prime example of sticking to the old misconceptions. Renault and all the other french manufacturers have upped their game tremendously in the last few years. Just look at the cars Renault had in the early 2000's and the ones we have now. A world of difference. Same goes for PSA. We could carry on criticising the french cars until the end of time. The truth is they are still french owned. What do we have that is still British owned? Diddly squat that's what!!!
I've owned several french cars over the past few years which have all had issues. I've owned a Swedish car with a french engine that had issues. I've worked in car hire and seen plenty of Peugeot and Renaults have issues. The Peugeot interiors aren't bad, but the Renault ones look very dated. These are not baseless accusations.
@@danielburgin28 let's agree to disagree. I have owned and driven many french cars in recent years too. Some not available in the UK. Latest Espace, Renault Talisman, Koleos, Kadjar even a Laguna coupé Monaco go. All fantastic cars with a ton more character than their German rivals too and even more reliable now.
Great review. I normally find Fifth Gear's videos to be annoying as there's too much bickering and banter and not enough car action but Jason and Karun are a great pair. Entertaining but still focused on the cars.
I’ve gone from A35 to the trophy and I’m not disappointed I love the point and shoot steering it’s so pint point I love the cup chassis feels more ruff and ready no body roll race set up 👌🏾
Christian Wold yeah there meant to be good cars maybe the build quality 10 years ago was a lot better but I had a long list of problems that was the same across the forums people experiencing so many problems it’s to much to list! Plus it’s the A35 AMG to be honest its not really AMG its hasn’t got the power stuff like S3 where annihilating me 🤣 embarrassing a five-year-old Audi but it’s all on line there in black and white there are just an overpriced Renault. On to the trophy RS Complete different machine it’s more race focused set up for a track you have to enjoy and be a good driver to drive the trophy in the Mercedes was a bit boring with all the driver AIDS 4 matic anybody can drive them fast because it does the work for you put both on the track The RS Will destroy it The only advantage the A35 will have is if it’s wet
@@archer7716 It's not, as long as it's an honest, genuine reason. A couple of guys above said they'd chose the Golf because because they are only going to drive to work. (not intending to smoke anyone from the lights given half a chance when it's quiet then?) VW's are stylish cars, but I'd feel a little silly getting minced by an R, then watching it disappear into the distance while glancing sadly at the badge on my steering wheel. Then after, the 7k extra you paid sinks in while you sit in your kitchen. Still could be worse, you could have a GTD and find a letter telling you to come in to the dealers for a free 'tune up', just for emissions reasons, probably struggle to beat a milk float after that. lol
"Little pop on the exhaust but no were as grunty as the other two" what are you'se on about? I bought an i30n and its only short of setting off car alarms when you let off past 4500rpm. In the real world with real people, price plays a massive point and thats where the i30n is winning over the rest. When i bought my i30n it was €39k. The throphy megane was €54k and the golf tcr was €62k. Id rather have the i30n and €23k spare. Its a very nice car to commute to work in.
I agree with you on sound. I have a GTI and even with Akrapovic exhaust it sounds worse then i30N. That engine just has a better note. But overall I like the golf more, it is just a matter of preferance.
The Hyundai i30N is already a cult car in Australia. People who had lesser, earlier Hyundai cars like the Getz. They stay with the brand because of amazing reliability, affordability, reasonable running costs so why go get a Euro car which are not setup for our country, cost more to buy and operate and questionable reliability.
Well, because I’m just a normal everyday joe, I’ll take the i30N over everything else, since it’s cheaper by quite a margin, supposedly more reliable (by how much money you put in case of a breakdown), and still a very capable for track use
i30N best imo, golf looks great but it’s just common and mud so many golfs kicking about. Barely see any i30Ns and they look so different from the non sport i30. Renault is cool but personal preference I don’t like the back end
ARentz07 I agree, the 7.5 performance pack is a great car for the road and I’d go for that over the TCR, the Megane would be best on the track which leaves the TCR nowhere
It has taken this long to see how tough, and truly changed the i30 now is, a true sports car, w/the N line Hyundai hatch backs..?.! The U.S. spec Veloster N line hatch came out over a year ago, and has been kicking ass in track matches. Beating the Golf R, Civic Si, and other fast hatches, on RU-vid. 2018-2019 Hyundai Veloster N-line.
For me i30 N is the winner the Best car for the money. I dont quite sure why typer R didn't appear in this test. It is clearly faster on this track then Megane
@@martinandersson5278 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dQ9mFuqdOZ0.html in this test you have Megane RS but this is the same track plus Big difference in time. I do not understand the logic behind the politics in Renault. RS trophy is unusable on the road. Trophy R has no back seats no 4 stearing plus its expensive. If i would choose I would go with simple RS
@@Angelos42 well man good for you. It is always the matter of perspective for JP is too stiff on the road. You can argue about it all Day but ultimately if you are ok with it its only what matters
AdiL Sure, it is a bit stiff, but nothing beyond what you’d expect from such a car. There are a LOT of regular cars that are way less comfortable on average roads.
If testing the TCR which is top of the range should have compared with the M4RS Throphy with the Sport package ( recaro + lightweight Mag wheels and Brembo composite ) .... would have been more equal.. also should have tested the Civic type R which is I believe equal first with the megane and is such a great car.....
I’d go for the i30 over it’s rivals for sure. I’ve seen brand new ones in dealers for £24k with the performance pack with a 5 year warranty and even a track warranty! I specced a golf gti with everything the i30n has on the configurator and it was over £10k more expensive....i30n all day!! Coming from a mk5 edition 30 owner
Cos they'll resort to talking about that when beaten on the track. Anything than admit it's inferior, in any way. Die hard fanboys, the fact that VWs still sell even after the emissions scandal tells you all you need to know,
@@robinmarples5198 It's a personal thing, but I tend to agree. Lets face it though, people buy those cars to race on the road to smoke others from the lights etc, as well as the track.......If your mate beats you to the next roundabout on the bypass you gonna sound a bit lame saying your gear lever feels cheaper than mine, and I don't like seats the're too hard. That's something Goldilocks would say lol
@@LivingLifeSlower Well I don't think so, at least I don't want to buy a car just to spend money and time on fixing it instead of actually driving it...and VAG' reliability is something pretty much open to debate
If that was me i take the i30 N because car's are not juste a lap time record but how much can get you smile! And she do the hard work with a little prince and 5 years warranty Compare megane Rs trohy with lightweight veloster the results will not be same
Personally think these two had preconceived notions about the Hyundai and were a bit sniffy about it. Okay the Renault was faster, but would you be confident that it wouldn't be down the garage every few months for mindless repairs. Hyundai interior is better hands down. Watch Steve Sutcliffe's review for Evo magazine.
You did not understand the purpose of the video. It s about upgraded hot hatchbacks on the basic one. Golf gti '' tcr '', megane rs '' trophy '' and I30n '' performance ''. The focus St exists in just 1 declination, the st
@@robinmarples5198 No. Not at all the Focus ST is perfectly capable of fighting the likes of i30N, GTi TCR and Megane RS..maybe not the Trophy. Infact in most race tracks the Focus ST is faster than TCR and Megane RS and i30N.
@@1989rs500 of course but that not the reason why it's not in the comparo. Listen the video carefully from the start you will understand... If not I will explain
@@1989rs500 the st is not an upgrade of an upgrade, if Ford makes an st s or an st r or an st something with upgrades it would be in the test. They just testing upgrade models. Tcr, trophy, n perf and not the basic one. The st is the basic form of the model not an amélioration. So it s not here
You could make the i30N even a better performer and you wouldn't reach the horendous price tag of that VW. It's just the image that makes them so expensive. Sadly.
They need to get a group together and do their test, 1 by all drivers rotating, 2 separate, no cars doing laps at the same time. In the end set all times, and prices, where they can compare abilities and prices. So, one may be better, but is it x% better 1 on road (technology, ride, seats, etc) and on track (same), for x% price difference.
If I30N in my country(SA) had a fair price would sell like hot cakes, unfortunately it's too expensive because of its 7yr warranty, it sell on price of mk7 R, though it looks like rigid car that can endure hard driving compared to golfs and meganes, Ford st
These comparisons with a slight differences wouldnt or shouldnt change anyones choices. Most people I know will rather make personal and irrational and emotional choices when chosing a car. Like its colour wheels sound system or 0-100km as if they keep dragging their cars 24/7...
Whoops Jason, you braked too hard at the finish, or maybe should of eased off around the course, VW aren't gonna be happy with you....his face says it all. lol
i30N with an ecu tune and you have the better more powerful car...and money to spare for a set of nice wheels. The new Megane is a disappointment to drive. If you want a Renault, get a Megane III RS Trophy. It’s still the better and more fun chassis.
In the real world, id get an N over the Megane much better build quality or save 10k and get a golf R which in Britain will be faster than everything here all year round.
Yes was thinking same... comparing new and near new competitors vs the now retiring Golf. I like all the cars but quality on VW does it for me... still the essence of a true hot hatch it needs to be a high quality comfortable daily. That is why I drive one. Though will be replacing with upcoming mk8 Golf R
OK I HAVENT been on the up and up the last year or so ....TIFF NEEDELL IS GONE!?!?!?!? THAT AGEISM RIGHT THERE....THAT'S WHY UK DISCOVERY GOT RID O HIM. I loved Tiff & Jason going at it. What a joke.
This is the correct matchup the top model of the Megane is the Trophy-R that one can be compared with the clubsport s. Hyundai doesn't have a track focus car like the R and S models of Renault and VW.
