This was published 2011 but the date, was around 2003-4 ish maybe earlier, cause i remember that era, and around that time i was an up and coming artiste myself. The young dude with the deep bass voice Calico, had a major buzz then, especially among the uptown crowds, schools etc. I met him when someone i knew, a manager of a current big name artiste for whom i did a dub plate, said he would love for me & him to do a free style, he arranged it and we did, however it wasn't recorded. The only unique thing i remember about it is that he began throwing out random words to make it more interesting, during my prime then that wasn't a problem & the rhymes weren't basic rhyme along but punchy bars that seem like it was pre arranged, I don't think i could do that now, he held his own to my surprise cause freestyle was hip hop spitter thing & being a rapper, i didn't expect him being a dj to be able to keep up. My portmore music crew, honed our talents with freestyle ciphers like weekly or twice a week in the early days. This definitely bring back memories we didn't have cameras for ours only cassette, but i wish we had to document the camaraderie and the energy and mannerism
we would drop freesstyles at night time after school at the bottom of my grandmother's gap. one of my boys was half bajan and jamacian, he wouls spin the tracks and we would shadow box. freestyling against your self it was a technique to raise your bars bro.
Dancehall rappers or DJ’s are way more versatile than rappers! You can put dancehall rappers on any type beat and they still spit fire 🔥 Toasting/talking/rapping on the flip or B side of reggae records started before rapping started here in the USA. The street dance culture of Jamaica gave birth to hip hop movement in NYC see kool Herc. African Americans confused. Kool Herc brought that big speaker and and turn tables to the street. Then American rappers started toasting on B side or during breaks in the records. African Americans are 30 years behind Jamaicans as far the abolition of slavery so they were playing catch up to us. Marcus Garvey cane here on a ship in early 20 century to open the eyes of black America.
ever since '02 I always been coming back to where this video has traveled. this is a hidden gem. Regan and Bay-C were among my favorite moments in this, but everyone bodied the session 👍
After watching this easily over 100 times or even jus bumpin it over the last 8 years, its about time I dropped a comment. Such a classic to showcase real real dancehall styleeee. Kartel Is One of The Few Dancehall Artists Who Came Out The Gate As A Legend. He Didn’t Need Any Co-Signs or A Warm Up Period of Creating Subpar Music Before His Assent.
Kartel Is in my top five dancehall artist but he is a living example of what money fame and greed(the devil) does to a man smh we still get to hear your music but we miss your intellectual presence di boss
