I keep sharing links but, being a quiet person, newly speaking out, especially in a time when we're so isolated, more often feels like flailing. "Scared to do it wrong" hits hard and even more reason to keep going.

Conan handles serious topics SO WELL. Best host ever

They're damn right it's not just an American problem. There are alarming parallels here in Australia. Since 1980 there have been 500 Aboriginal deaths in police custody. The same bullshit arguments are used to rationalise the fact that there are rarely consequences beyond an internal investigation for the police officers involved. Aboriginal people are incarcerated at an even more disproportionate rate than Black Americans, and many aboriginal people live in third world conditions in a country that has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Until that shit is sorted out, I can't honestly say, as a white guy, that I'm truly proud to be Australian. By the way, if you're a white person looking for a good example of how to support Black Lives Matter and the civil rights movement in general (without unintentionally making it about you), I recommend checking out the documentary Salute (search for Salute the Movie). It tells the story of Peter Norman who shared the podium with Jon Carlos and Tommie Smith at the Mexico Olympics in 1968 when they made their now famous civil rights protest, holding their fists in the air in the Black panther salute. It tells the tale of how a small gesture of support can mean, what it cost all three men, and debunks the myth that such acts of solidarity aren't appreciated. It also taught me a lot about the Civil Rights movement in america at the time. The friendship those three great men forged that day is something I aspire to emulate. It's also very interesting to compare and contrast the different ways that the various white people in the film viewed the incident. I will stand with you because Black Lives Matter.

We're having real conversation now. Too bad it took what it took to happen.

Tbh, I am really enjoying these talks. Each new guest brings forth more points I hadn't yet considered.

I really like this idea of being more diverse selfishly, to create a more vibrant and interesting society. I also am thinking about my own inventory, and this idea that I should embrace that I'm going to make mistakes is a really, really important encouragement. This was powerful, and empowering (I'm not leaving feeling hopeless, but instead hopeful). Thank you Conan, and thank you W. Kameu Bell for sharing and educating, and helping drive reflection and tangible change.

Conan deserves a medal. This was a hard, hard interview. Those were some hard questions shot at him and I think he answered them with as much honesty as he could.

Making sure Black people are safe is an exercise we need to do every day until & after we're truly an equal society. BLACK LIVES WILL ALWAYS MATTER & I WILL DO EVERYTHING IN MY WILL TO LEARN & KEEP WORKING! W. Kamau Bell is one of my favorite people & Comedians.

I knew someone who lived in a house that had a cellar (that they have since sealed off because the door would not stay shut, NOT JK) that was part of the Underground Railroad. Not only was the house haunted, but when I would stand in the cellar, there was a true presence and emotion down there that one could feel. Or I and the family who lived there could feel at least. The first time I went down there I started weeping. Uncontrollably. It just overtook me. A wave of fear and sadness and heartache. The ghosts of the past are still with us. In many more ways than one. The struggle still lives and we should never forget the human atrocities and abuses of hate filled brutality that have occurred in the past. OR IN THE PRESENT. I write this as a 1/2 Jewish white girl-The past can never be forgotten. Lest we let another Hitler or George Wallace come to power. Wait, I meant to write “STAY IN POWER”. We must vote for lasting change to happen...

As a fellow product of Brookline public schools, I really appreciate hearing Conan talking about his upbringing there with candor. Up until a certain point in my life, I had a real belief that Racism was done, even in the late 90s - but then Brookline was the first place I experienced racism. A lot of towns and cities in the northeastern US have today this same kind of “good-intentions gumption” about how bigotry is a thing of the past.

I completely understand where he's coming from. when I was in the military, I noticed there was a lot of diversity. I never thought anything of it and I really never believed that diversity was important but, now I work in a company that has over 100 employees and almost 100% of them are white men there's literally 1 black dude and like 3 Hispanics, and that's it now I know for a fact you can't get numbers like that without discriminating. and it just feels wrong

This was amazing. I've always loved watching Conan, and the conversations need to be had just like this one. Where we can talk about the seriousness of the problem, we can find a common ground, find a solution to the problem that is racism, but also we can keep an open dialogue and also be able to laugh while making sure we keep pushing forward. I loved his point about doing the work. Just like the saying goes "faith without works, is dead" and it can be applied here, without doing the work to fix the system, it will never be changed.

Conan is using his intellect and platform in an amazing way. This is why i love this guy. He can act all stupid and goofy but also serious and eloquent when he it's necessary. I just love watching him and his contents. Conan is awesome.

I was encouraged to hear what Kamau said about participating for selfish reasons. When trump got elected it hit me how oppression of black people is holding back progress on every issue: health Care, education, income equality, the environment. White people still don't realize that our destinies are 100% tied up together.

Kamau hit the nail on the head with selfishness... Good selfishness, that's the only way real authentic change can occur... "get caught up in the humanity of it" wow!!!

After all that's happened, Kamau's shirt just broke me.

I really feel for the late night hosts as I believe they are all open, sensitive & accepting people, Especially Conan! They bring rawness to their interviews, an understanding & empathy. They are comedians & at a certain level they understand rejection etc. However, this would be a totally different area for them to try to relate to. I admire & thank them for their courage.

Agreed that the system isn't broken; it's designed to work this way.

I can tell this is real because you can see the discomfort in Conan. That is not a bad thing. Change is uncomfortable. The talk is uncomfortable. I think we are all going to have to be a little uncomfortable.

Neither here nor there but I'm glad Kamau mentioned Conan's thoughts on cynicism..those words have also stayed with me.

EVERYBODY READ THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X

IMO (in my opinion) at least 3 things need to be done immediately to “put out the fire” (as Kama says): 1. Get the court case DONE already, the officer has been charged, get it done and make sure justice works this time 2. All officers in ALL departments & states/territories - if they have an abusive history, as this officer did, FIRE THEM IMMEDIATELY. They have until July 15 to get this done and publicly show their work. No more chances for these corrupt cops, they’ve already shown they’re not effective in delivering justice according to the Constitution 3. Training for police - we all know there are a lot of law abiding cops. What they need to add is training to get rid of corrupt cops. For example, the other 3 officers should’ve pulled Derek Chauvin off of Floyd, or NOT EVEN ALLOW HIM TO STAY KNEELING on Floyd once he was considered “under control” (not sure if I’m using “politically correct” terminology here, just trying to get solutions out there as this needs to be dealt with immediately). This “blue shield/blue code/blue wall of silence”, whatever it’s called must be shut down immediately. It does NOT help the situation. NO OFFICER SHOULD BE MADE TO FEEL he’s a “bad cop/rat” for reporting the brutality (excessive use of force, as we all know force is needed when rightful arrest being resisted by a suspect) of a fellow officer against ANY suspect. I have no idea how this change could be effected. It’s Much more systemic. For example, It’s no different than the crash of 2007/08 and NONE OF THE CENTRAL BANKERS WHO CAUSED IT TO HAPPEN were convicted of their crimes. Yet hundreds of thousands of Americans are still living in their vehicles or in the streets - all races & colors. Central bank cartel’s crimes are still going unchecked today. Maybe they’re even financially supporting all this societal corruption & disruption.

For all the ppl of color reading this, ily. Over the past year I've been through a bit of a tough time. I'm half white half mexican, and where I live it's not blacks that get bullied, it's whites. But I live in the suburbs so the ways to scare off a bully are endless, but I've always felt bad for the ppl on the other side of things. I understand as a person who saw the George Floyd video that the racial injustice between whites and blacks are out of hand. This shouldn't be happening. It's hard to understand that a lot of ppl in this world believe that they're better than someone just cuz they were born a different race. I look more white than I do mexican, so I'm not gonna have to grow up scared of cops, I'm lucky. But just cuz I look the way I do doesn't mean I should have more opportunities than someone who looks different to me. When ur young ur protected from the real world, but even being 12 rn, I realize the world is complicated. Full of anger and hate. I have the most beautiful gf with the most beautiful heart, and she's asian. My ex was white and treated me like garbage. She broke up with me after two weeks. I've been with my gf now almost 10 months. I'm not saying all whites are privileged pricks, im just saying that u can't judge someone on their appearance. It's stupid if u think about. Rest in peace George Floyd, and be a lesson that this injustice needs to change. 💖🙏✌️

Thank you for this, it was very informative and educational as a person of colour. We need more history lessons on black issues to understand why we are where we are today. Don’t be afraid of the terminology. It’s ok to say black issues to describe specific black issues. It’s ok to say people of colour when it’s specific issues to all people of colour. I hope there will be a lasting positive change as we see more companies showing solidarity.

This is a system problem, The system is racist and we need to take on the work, the real work together and Hold how are we complicit. Time to get uncomfortable and burn this thing down from the inside out. I just joined a community today that is grouping white people together and POC together, we are reading "My Grandmother's Hands" and spending a year together to do a deep dive around the embodiment of racism. I am so willing to find more love in this world for each other, I'll burn and Hold and do my best to give up my comfort for the good of the whole. One breath at a time. discussons like this one is great. I love that conon now has a mentor in Kate and that we are learning to do our work. If we do it together, we can get though this and build real community, LIberation and Justice for all, a worthy struggle, Again, thanks for this. I took notes.

I've been asked "questions" at the workplace because I am south Asian - and one of the questions is..."but when do these demands for equality stop?" !!!!! :) :) i just go back to eating lunch as Kamau said. I am humble enough to know my place in this debate ( i will never appropriate "racism" for selfish gain) but i want to say that every day, every minute, every second, i am grateful for black people who fought for the freedoms i claim as my "own". i really appreciate the window this video gave me into the future of american history

I learned sooo much from this conversation! And it makes so much more sense to NOT identify any of these systems as "broken," which implies that they were working at one time. (Including but not limited to policing, healthcare, education, welfare, etc etc..)
