Ken Tanaka is back on the water. This time in New Jersey for the NJ Fly Fisherman of the Year. This event is a one fly event brought to you by New Jersey Trout Unlimited and Shannon's Fly and Tackle. One representative from each TU chapter competes in this fantastic one day event.
I decided to go with one of my original flies the Pink Power Ranger. The fly did well. Caught one fish in both beats. Unfortunately I was 2 points shy of advancing to the finals.

Unfortunately I don’t fish that stream enough to know that much about it. Although, I can tell you that the past two winners of the 1 fly at that time were using the Mop Fly.

Yeah... no doubt. It was a tough with the slow and low beats that I had. The luck of the draw or in this case the unluck of the draw. Shannon's hosted a great event and I hope to represent my TU chapter next year.

Great job ken. A friend of mine guides the one fly on the Snake river in Jackson hole and told me that what they do is pick a pattern that can be modified from floating to nymph if needed. And I finally did some video with my Sony on my trip to North Georgia. Got to use the Sony and my 7'6", 3 pc, 5wt bamboo rod I made. Which by the way passed with flying colors on several Trout between 18-26 inches. Water levels are very very low up there with a drought so sneaking up on these fish was tough.Hope to post it in the near future Buy the way what program do you use to edit your videos? And do talk overs. Thanks again Ken for all the advise on videoing fishing.

I might have to think about that next time if I'm able to compete. I mean even if you sank a Elk Hair Caddis I bet it would do well. Couple drops of Henry's Sinket and some Tungsten Putty. Modify the EHC with a little soft hackle. Didn't you say that you didn't use Facebook?

I use iMovie. I have Final Cut but don't have the need. For voiceovers I do one of two things. Either just use the audio only portion of the video and layer or voice over with a external mic. That can be done with iMovie.

The program makes zero difference. iMovie is a free program. It's all about footage and editing.

I know right!... that hopper was getting some serious looks and rises! If only I had the balls to put on a dry! Funny because we talked about that early in the morning before the first beat when we saw that fish rise!

great video, was the Loomis rod the NRX light? Hank Paterson for president! couldn't be any worse then our choices now. Luck of the draw is sometimes key in those kinda tournament's. it's all about the people you meet and the things you see along the way. Keep on fishing .

Hey ken, I've been fishing the youghiogheny over the last couple weeks, one day the fish were rising all over by the outflow and were hammering a big caddis when skittered and a twitching a hopper, but last Friday I only got a few hits and I have lost confidence, I feel lost, every rock is covered with midges, should I just try getting tiny midges down? Should I try egg pattern? Swinging wet flies ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, im going there tomorrow and it's suppose to be partly sunny and 75 degrees

There is a couple things you can try. Was the day that they were hitting your fly overcast vs bright sunny day? What size tippet were you using? Might wanna try to go down in tippet. I would also try smaller flies like the midge. Just because they were rising to your caddis one week and you might see caddis this week doesn't always mean they are rising to them. I don't think I will do a video on that subject but I will be more than happy to answer and questions you might have and give you some direct tips. With fish photos it's all about the camera angle. I'm only using my iPhone. Nothing special about it.

what is the rule on rods? I know there is only 1 fly but can you have multiple rods rigged with that one fly

I don't think there is any rules on that. That's funny because I thought about doing that. Having one rod Euro rigged and the other suspension rigged. Decided against it so I didn't bother looking into it.

Yeah... it was super slow. Which is why I went with suspension. Also jig style hooks were not allowed for some reason.

Have been a TU member for many years. Was part of the group that started the North Jersey Chapter in 1969. But TU has lost its way. Trout fishing is NOT a contest. Izaak Walton is rolling over in his grave!

richard tedesco - Haha! Relax, it's a friendly competition that is put together for fun. Actually he would probably think the exact opposite. That so many people are getting together every year and having a good time while all enjoying the sport they love. It's negative attitudes like yours that give the sport a bad name. Attend the event next year and see for yourself.
