Trying smoked shad for the first time with delicious results! Brine: I quart water, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup salt, 1/4 cup soy sauce. Set over night. Smoke 6-8 hours, to taste. 3-4 pans of chips! I was glad I left it in a little longer, it made the bones nice and chewy.

I know it's an old video, but I still want to comment. You can put smoked shad twice through meat grinder and mix it with cream cheese and make smoked fish pate. Delicious

Never had smoked shad. Mom used to cook it to death to soften the bones. I've learned to fillet the things and end up with long strips of meat. More fun to catch if you ask me.

Awesome video, Blake! Shad is not something I've fished for before. It's good to know they're tasty when smoked - I think I'll have to go find some!

Thanks! I really like them, they have a flakey texture, but are firmer than herring. They'd be a dream fish if not for all the teeny bones. Oh well, free calcium!

Great vids watched them all. Very educational,entertaining,and great editing/filming. Many other fishing channels should look towards what a real fishing channel looks like, congrats you really have something going! Glad i found your channel.

There is a filet technique that gets all the bones out, on YT but it is time consuming. There is also a technique of making a couple dozen little cuts on each side of the fish then pan frying or grilling slow and it lets the heat in and the bones disolve

nice vid! I haven't got a chance to get to the Columbia in a while but next time I do I'll try to catch some shad

right on! It was my first time and I had a blast... I might spend a couple of nights down there next year-- those shad were good eating and fighting!

Hey, what was the temperature that you used for your smoker? I was thinking of trying both this wet brine and also try a dry brine(5 cups brown sugar and 1 cup salt spread over the fish and sealed and refrigerated overnight) to compare tastes, I know that baking shad in the oven at 200 degrees for 4 hours dissolves the bone as does pressure cooking it. Thanks.

So now that you r not doing any fishing videos you should do a rod arsenal video with all your rods and some of your tackle.

Hey there! I live in Issaquah, next to lake samamish, and was wondering if you wanted to give fishing here a shot!? During the spring/summer me and my friends head out to an island and fish at the mouth of a creek (not issaquah creek, f. y. i) and catch all sorts of lake fish, but one you could make a new target for would be pikeminnow. Pikeminnow here would be cool, because its not like the columbia river, and you could teach to anyone who cant get to the columbia. I am willing to meet up and fish/or give info on what i have learned!
@WAFishQuest
@WAFishQuest 10 лет назад
that might work! I was pondering doing a pikeminnow episode in May or June (I would have done it at the Columbia after catching some shad). But Lake Sammamish would be great seeing as it's beautiful. Let me know when you start getting out there! I'll try to get up there and we can meet up!

You know, I've never tried it with trout. I just brined a couple of chum salmon with it though, and it came out really good!
