I'm back from baby hiatus! I love winter crabbing in Puget Sound (November-December). No crowds, beautiful scenery, plus you get to eat crab! Boston Harbor, Olympia, WA (December 2013)
Merry Christmas to me! A new episode of WA Fish Quest featuring one of my songs and my favorite spot on the planet, Boston Harbor. I used to live not far from there. I'll be back someday soon. Great work again Blake. Gonna watch this a few times.
hey blake i like the idea that you use chum salmon as bait. I also use chum salmon heads as bait . Im 11 years old now but when i was five i got my first sets of crab pots. I went out with my dad the next day and we got two 9" inch dungeness crabs! but i also got a dogfish in one of my pots ! All the crabs had eaten it by the time we pulled the crab pots back up but it was still cool! I hope you and your kid can go out and have awsome moments on the water like me and my dad :) god bless and tight lines -derrick
love your video seems like the only time I had some peace of mind no stress is when I with my interracial brothers all white family in aberdeen wa steamboat Island, no stress I didn't have to worry about anything but having to have open heart surgery,, so peaceful I love them and miss them, they go crabbing and fishing all the time
hey man i moved away from olympia upon joining the service, but i am moving back there this month! Its where i was born and raised, and lets just say i miss my home town (and the saltwater) I will be starting my outdoor channel there, and putting on a wetsuit and diving while holding my breath to get crabs :) I am excited to be back home, and your video made me miss home even more!
thank you! I have about 20 hours of video so sift through, and settling in is taking a toll financially, but once i get fully settled in, the outings will start and the videos will come!
Great vid dude. Rock crab make great crab cakes but i like dungeness the best. just wanted to point out that those clam necks that you said were geoducks are piddock clams. very close to the geoduck. I have dug&dived for geoduck here in Puget Sound for over 20yrs. and the geoduck has a very clear&smooth neck where the piddock clam is a little more hairy&rough.
Got a good tip for you. When they grab things with the claw. Just use your nail and lift the flap on the underside (belly). they dont like that and loosen there grip. The second thing is if you press on the shell under the claw shoulder, if you feel the shell is weak there its no or little meat in the crab. becouse of resently shell change. In Norway we eat all the meat in the crab. Claws, top shell and body.
Sweet a new episode! I am so happy your back. I am doing a Cascadia Big Fishing Year www.bigfishingyear.net this next year and your videos have been really helpful. I am headed up to the sound in January for blackmouth, flounder, and squid. Welcome back!
thanks Spilt Milt! Checked out the website (is there an extra s in the link above? I got here thru www.bigfishingyear.net/) That sounds like an AWESOME challenge! I'm really excited to see your adventure unfold! I was thinking of going after grayling this year-- if you don't have a hiking buddy let me know... I hear the trail to Upper Granite is pretty brutal!
Alright my bored time left in Iraq is going to be ok with a new Fish Quest!!!! 2 more weeks and 1 month vacation. hope to hit some good ice fishing with my son Theo for my vacation!!!! Nice looking Reds I missed the late season for sound crabbing, hopefully my vacation timing next summer will have me home for Aug 2014, I know the baby inbound, as our next one is due beginning of June. So not much fishing for my son and I in June. Keep up the great work and Im looking forward to seeing some good shows this year. Late Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Baghdad Iraq.
Happy 2014 Tom! I hope you have a great time with family and get some good fish tales out of your upcoming vacation! Congratulations on the new addition in June!
Thank you so much Marcel! Your comment made my day! We'll see about pike-- since they're not native and apex predators our fish department nets them out of the areas they reproduce well in. I think I'll try sometime, but likely won't succeed unless I go over to Idaho where they are considered top game fish.
Another great episode! Thanks for your work on RU-vid. I've learned quite a lot from your videos! Do you know any piers in the South Puget sound area good for bottom fishing and crabbing? :)
Thanks a ton for the kind words! Unfortunately no... The only pier I've seen people get crab at (mainly red rocks) is the Clyde Davidson Pier in Steilacoom. There might be more-- I just know that one because I squid there from time to time. Although you can't fish off of it I've heard you can catch sizable pile perch around the pier at Luhr's Landing (Nisqually). Only tried once myself-- didn't do any good.
Washington Fish Quest Thanks so much for the tips! I'll check out Clyde Davidson Pier. I usually aim for Red Rocks so that would be perfect. Keep up the good work on your videos and best of luck on fatherhood! Congratulations :)
You are really branching out with the music here (and I'm not talking about Amanda's rendition of the 90's X-Men theme). Can we expect more songs in 2014?
It's time for Washington (shell)fish quest! Hahaha your intro rules Blake! Having the most fun possible that's what you do and that's what fishing is about!
Hello! You cannot unfortunately. 1) they don't allow it and 2) MA13 is closed. The piers of Tacoma are probably your closest option when the season is open. (I usually head to Westport myself). Thank you for watching and the question!
Hi Colin! Great question. It depends on the area. In Puget Sound there is a summer and a winter season. The winter seasons are dependent on how many crabs are harvested in the summer season. If there is a decent quota available WDFW will re-open the crab fisher November-December. This winter the season was reopened everywhere but area 10 (Seattle) and 11 (Tacoma). You can crab for both Dungeness and red rock when the season is open.
I love your videos! Hope you don't get burned out on making them. Did you actually tie down your Gopro inside the trap? Also, it looks weird, but at 2:15 it looked like the trap landed on a bunch of exposed geoduck clams. Anyway, keep them coming!
Thanks a ton Corbfisher! I think as long as I allow myself short breaks I won't burn out. Yep, I just zip tied my camera in the pot and it did land on a bunch of geoducks!!
Thanks Greg! Hopefully you see this now that replying is difficult on youtube. I have not gotten a gopro yet. I got a little underwater camera. It's meant for snorkeling, but shoots pretty well 50 feet down!
you should for bait some cat food like the canned stuff, the smellier the better. Then, put it in pantyhose and tie it to the cage. youd be surprised by how good the pantyhose work as well as the cat food.
