Sorry about the quality of the audio. Some places the audio is pretty muddy. A portion of the tape was done by someone else, and some friends & I did the later portions, up to the end of the music radio era in 1982. It was recorded & edited on a home cassette recorder, because I didn't have access to a studio some 30 years ago when this was recorded & dubbed.

Radio was so cool back in these days. Brings back so many memories. And definitely remember the American Contemporary Network sounder so neat.

I Think WABC-AM 770 Should Have Stayed a Top-40 Rock And Roll Radio Station Until May-1990 And Maybe Have It Simulcast On 95.5-FM

Raymond Malcuit No. it was quickly dying, and by 1981 the ratings were in the toilet. At this point they were not as strong as their sister station WLS. The younger listeners had already abandoned the station. Going to talk was the right move. It allowed them to fill the talk void before someone else did. By 1988 they had made the talk format a success. Had they played music until 1990, they may have never been able to dig their way out of the ratings hole they were in. Simulcasting it on 95.5 May not have been a bad idea, but they did not want to give up the WPLJ money from playing Rock.

it Just That WPLJ 95.5 Had Become a Top-40 Radio Station In June-1983.

I Thought, Maybe If WABC Would Have Stayed a Top-40 Rock And Roll Radio Station And Have It Simulcast On 95.5-FM? They Would Have Done All Right, We Will Never Know, It Proves To Show That Life Sometimes Is Full Of Unanswered Questions.

Raymond Malcuit If you remember, WPLJ did go Top 40 1 year after WABC went away, but it had to compete with Z100. PLJ was always 2nd to Z100. If PLJ had made the switch 1 year earlier, 95.5 could have been the big top 40 station. Either way, had 77 stayed top 40, Z100 would have killed it in a year.

The "American Contemporary Radio" thing started on Jan.1,1968.First time I heard it, my dad was driving me to the airport to fly back to college about 7am in the morning on New Year`s Day 1968.Lack of sleep and a bad head did not help matters.LOL I liked WABC better prior to that. Even the news block from 6:15PM until 7PM wasn`t that bad.No more Don McNeil`s Breakfast Club at 10AM either. The play list was ridiculously small. Luckily Big Dan Ingram was still there.

The Ed Ames gimmick likely got Dan in the doghouse with the PD.

And that's what's wrong with radio. Don't do anything funny or entertaining. I was belly-laughing while he did it. It was hilarious.
