I remember seeing this commercial back around 1965, and begging my mother and father to get some Wackies because I liked this commercial (especially the gorilla saying "Noooooo")!! Then I tasted this banana-flavored cereal and man it was nasty!! But I was only like 9 years old, so I don't know?? I remember the box not getting finished (none of my 6 brothers would touch it), and my mother finally threw it out. I'd sure like to give this cereal another chance now that I'm older, but Wackies didn't seem like it was on the market very long at all?!? Guess that's what you get when you create odd-length 0:45 second commercials to promote your product??...

We had them in Boston, briefly. I was 3 or 4 and I liked em, then they were gone. I remember them as banana Lucky Charms. I'm 48 ad still eat Lucky Charms.

This was one of my favorite cereals. Purchased at King Kullen, Long Island, NY when I was about 5-6 years old. Runner up cereal was Post's Crispy Critters

I can remember seeing these on the A&P store shelf in ancient history when A&P was out here in the Pacific Northwest. Mom wouldn't let me get any Wackies, and never saw them after that... I was born in '60 so I must've been a half-pint then.

I never heard of Wackies cereal until viewing this video. If there were Wackies in the Los Angeles area, I never saw the commercial and mom never bought them.

...and, when General Mills, through their "DFS Program Exchange", syndicated their Hanna-Barbera produced "YOUNG SAMSON" ["SAMSON & GOLIATH", 1967-'68] in the '80s, they included "Go-Go Gophers" (from "THE UNDERDOG SHOW") as a middle segment. GM still controls the syndication rights to those series to this day...

That's correct, fromthesidelines!! I have a good amount of 0:15 second commercials (including about 4 or 5 for Wackies), but almost no 0:45 second commercials!!

Jay Ward produced all the characters for General Mills ceral in the 60s. He liked to draw pictures of himself in an old-time Navy uniform and it became the Captain Crunch concept. At one point characters such as Bullwinkle pushed Big G cereals.

@tonywallacess45 But Cap'n Crunch is a Quaker cereal. (So were Quisp and Quake.) I remember a General Mills "Big G" cereal called Frosty O's. Dudley DoRight was on the box. This was in the late 1970's.

Sometimes, 'weenie', General Mills would feature a 15 second plug for another of its cereals, after a 45 second spot like this one, to round out a full minute of ad time- possibly for Trix or Cocoa Puffs...
@fromthesidelines
@fromthesidelines 14 лет назад
Ward didn't produce ALL of "Big G"'s cereal commercials; some were created by the quartet behind Total Television- Joe Harris/Treadwell Covington/Buck Biggers/Chet Stover- because they, except for Covington, used to work for Dancer-Fitzgerald-Sample, the ad agency representing General Mills {Harris was an art director, Biggers & Stover were account executives}. The animation was sometimes handled by Gamma, the Mexican studio that also worked on Ward's shows and commercials...

yeah, it's really a shame that this cereal didn't catch on..i remember it was terrific!!.....and since Wackies went off the market, no cereal manufacturer that i know has tried to create a banana-flavored cereal.....what's with that??
@bobbybickert
@bobbybickert 3 месяца назад
@citizenterryk In the early 1980's there was Kelloggg's Banana Frosted Flakes. The flakes had little bits attached to them that I assume were dried bananas. The box was yellow instead of blue and Tony the Tiger was wearing a straw hat.

The "common link", 'tony', was General Mills. They OWNED the rights to all of those series (as well as being their primary sponsor), and were able to "mix and match" several of those segments; i.e. new episodes of "The King and Odie" and "The Hunter" were initially seen on "TENNESSEE TUXEDO & HIS TALES", and repeats of "Tooter & Mr. Wizard" and "The Hunter" were seen in earlier seasons of 'THE UNDERDOG SHOW" on NBC....and were also seen on ABC's "DUDLEY DO-RIGHT SHOW' in 1969-'70.....

And I remember re-releases in the 80's and 90's from the Program Exchange (at that time owned by Saatchi & Saatchi NY)

Actually, I recall a cereal called Moonies, and the prize which came with it was a small glow in the dark moon globe.

A banana marbit cereal would be a big seller today if they pushed it. In the 60s they only gave a cereal a few months to catch on then bubye!!!

Really, I actually ate some Wackies here in Washington DC. This would have been around 1964-1965!! I woulda been arounf 8 or 9 years old, and they tasted nasty to me back then!! I'd guess they wouldin't taste so bad if in production today (as I now like banana flavored things??) I think I have a "Mr. Waffle" comercial in my collection, somewhere...

Perhaps it was cause the banana-flavored marshmallows weren't "flavorful" enough for kids (I get the opinion, from those who remembered eating it, that it was one taste, and "bleecch!"). No one wants to eat a "nasty" tasting cereal- and THAT'S why Wackies disappeared from shelves after a year or so.

@fromthesidelines Man, you know your Total Television. I'm still confused as to how the Total and Ward cartoons are in mixed sydication packages so that Underdogs and Bullwinkles and Dudley Doorights are all mixed together. I guess the common link is Gamma productions whose cheap, minimalist style adds to the film's quality. I don't think Rocky would be as funny with quality art work.
