Are you an illustrator looking to get a drawing tablet? Choosing the right one can be difficult and overwhelming. I own both a Wacom Cintiq Pro 24 Creative Pen Display and an iPad Pro 12.9 and use them daily for my client work. Both are amazing machines but come with some very important pros and cons that might just sway your decision to get one over the other. So watch this review, see how I use both and decide for yourself which works best for you! Enjoy!
Wacom Cintiq Pro 24 Creative Pen Display - amzn.to/2IdYzMV
iPad Pro 12.9 - amzn.to/2X82oGZ
Accessories:
Parc Slope by Twelve South (wedge) - amzn.to/2CUJE8M
Matte Screen Protector for iPad Pro - amzn.to/2oMjGKO
Apple Pencil Cap Holder/Tether/Nip Protector (for 1st generation Apple Pencil) - amzn.to/2VAwjXU
Apple Pencil - amzn.to/2IeLDGM (I mentioned in the video that the Apple Pencil costs $99, but mine is the old version. You can still get that one and it is amazing. But this link is to the 2nd generation that is $129.)

I had a 10th gen iPad ru-vid.comUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.

A good way to compare these two machines is to say that the Cintiq is like a desktop program, and the iPad is a mobile app. The Cintiq is a purpose built machine for maximum productivity. The iPad is an extension of that productivity by allowing you to get some more work done while away from the shop. If you doing production level work and time matters, then something like the Cintiq is a must. If you're not working on the clock, then a tablet allows you to create wonderful art. The difference is about time and productivity. Not quality. Both can do amazing stuff.

...And psychology sometimes. I have a cintiq 13hd and work as digital artist, yet sometimes It takes lots of time to warm up and really gets things going. I realised I do things faster when I see my cintiq as if it's "paper and pencil" instead of a computer screen, but I bet it would be easier with an ipad, since it's lighter, easier to move and I'm close to its screen. The best thing to do is borrowing and testing before buying, so you get to see which one really works best specifically for you.
@KuttyJoe
@KuttyJoe 4 года назад
@@UmTois That's a very interesting observation, and I think that the iPad is probably going to be as close to pencil and paper as you can get. Apple really did raise the bar, and continued raising it with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.

@Sonic the Artist you pay for quality. If your an artist, 3-4 grand for something your going to make 10k plus on is a small investment. Plus now and again you can write things off as a business expense. I know people who spend 10s of thousands of dollars on their equipment, but they make that money back in 2-3 years easily. Take my headphones. I paid 200 for them. I could have bought a cheap 30 dollar pair but its night and day in quality. Plus I get a warranty and extra accessories.

It is great when I want to sit with the iPad on my lap in my recliner chair or when I want to sit on my bed and work. I can even use it on my desk. Great comparison, thanks for posting this. This is the kind of issue we as illustrators are confronted with nowadays, so super to have this outlined here. As a professional illustrator for more then 30 years I have used numerous Wacom tablets and Cintiqs - I remember buying the first screen/tablet hybrid ever that Wacom released (around 2001 I think), it was a miracle to start drawing on this 15 inch model…. exactly what I needed at the time. No sure if this was already called a Cintiq. In my view, Cintiqs became worse and worse over the years: image quality worsened because of the coating on top, really degrading the crisp view that the earlier models featured. And adding fans (that really sound bad and loud) degraded the experience even more for me. I started seeing them as bulky machines that took away any joy of using them. Nowadays, I use an iPad Pro when I need to sketch, draw or paint with pixels, and also for creating lines for my cartoon artwork (Affinity Designer for iPad is the most perfect tool for this, for me). All my other vector artwork is created on my iMac Pro, with just an Intuos 5 M. This combination works perfectly well and fast for me. But I realise that it is all up to personal preference.

Nice review! I have the same Cintiq Pro 24 with the touch features, though I should've saved my money as I always turn it off. I use the Wacom Ergo arm rather than the big stand. It's a couple hundred cheaper, frees up your desk, and gives you more versatility in screen placement. I'd easily recommend that before the giant stand. Also keep in mind, some of your lag may be due to your Macbook Pro struggling to keep up. I've hooked mine up to a custom built PC and it's smooth as glass on projects with hundreds of layers at hi-res in Photoshop CC 2019. NOTE: There is a LOW FAN SPEED OPTION in your Wacom Cintiq settings. Make sure you have the latest Firmware and driver upgrades on the screen. It makes a huge difference! I also bought an iPad Pro 11" to see how I'd like it. I returned it 3 days later as the workflow just doesn't work for me, as I tried getting into Procreate. There's too many sacrifices, plus I don't travel enough to justify it. The Apple Pen 2 is nice, but I still think Wacom's Pro Pen 2 is far superior, plus it doesn't use batteries. If I needed a mobile solution, I'd probably buy the Wacom Mobile Studio Pro so it's an identical workflow to the home studio setup. Again, nice review!
@BravetheWoods
@BravetheWoods 5 лет назад
Hey thanks so much for the thoughtful and thorough comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I should have definitely looked into the Wacom Ergo Arm. Now I want to sell my base and get the arm! Appreciate the heads up. I can't believe I didn't know about the low fan speed option! It has been driving me CRAZY being as loud as it has been. Sometimes I even turn it off to record videos haha. THANK YOU! Yeah, I have really embraced Procreate and spent a ton of time on it so it is really starting to feel more comfortable to me. But I totally get why you would still prefer the Cintiq. That Mobile Studio is intriguing as well! Thanks for all your help and support!

I think you make great points,people tend to forget you need a decent PC to use art software on large Cintiqs.So if you don’t already own fairly powerful hardware,the cintiq route is even more expensive.I find iPad Pro with Artstudio Pro with large canvas size and large blending textured brushes has less lag than my PC/Cintiq setup.Ipad Pro can be a very good option ,double tap with Apple Pencil 2 is awesome for workflow as well.

What a great setup. I think it is great that you invest in your tools the way you do, as many professionals are constantly hedging. I slept in cars, and used credit cards to start my businesses several decades ago, so that I had the tools and marketing budget to give the best chance for success. Some things are superfluous, but I'm sure I am speaking the obvious to you when I say that a top notch tablet for a serious graphics professional, that definitely isn't superfluous. i just got the 12.9 on amazon on sale -148$ so along with the pen and the case i basically payed for the tablet and got the pen and case for free if you think of it that way. cause after adding it together it was roughly the same price as if i were ONLY buying the tablet on apple. amazon ftw xD

It’s interesting how everybody works differently. I set up my Cintiq to where I don’t use the keyboard at all. I slide the keyboard under the screen, then pull the screen down completely covering the keyboard so it isn’t even visible. Then I use the EK Remote for almost everything. In addition to that, Wacom software allows you to create toolbars with icons/functions for anything. So I set up a couple of those toolbars and for some of my lesser used functions rather than having to dig into a menu. Between that and the EK Remote, I have access to everything without ever going back to the keyboard. I feel like it gives me the fastest workflow. I keep one hand on the EK Remote at all times and I can do most actions without having to look at it. I can do them by feel, like using the home keys on a keyboard. I also don’t use the touch screen model. I just work faster when I have physical controls. I also have an iPad Pro. My wife uses it exclusively because sitting at the desktop and using the Cintiqs hurts her back. So she sits on the couch, or on the floor and places the ipad Pro on the table. The workflow is a lot slower so if I’m at home, it’s always best to use the Cintiq in terms of speed. Especially with highly customizable programs like Clip Studio Paint. But the iPad Pro is very nice.

My only problem with the ipad was that it didn't have clip studio. I didn't want to abandon it for procreate. But now the app store does have clip studio paint and also going to release photoshop which is a game changer. Also, procreate has become really good

Great review, very insightful! I do a lot of CAD work as a fashion designer but I'd like to see if using a pen on a Wacom or the 2018 iPad pro would help make my CADing faster. The new Mac OS Catalina is supposed to be able to Airplay to the iPad Pro but will have a slight lag, they also said it can connect through USB-C which would lessen the lag. I'm curious if this would make it a better option for me since I travel a lot. If illustrator would come out with an iPad app it'd be a no brainer for me, but unfortunately still waiting for that.

Hey Brad. I use iKlip Studio adjustable desktop stand for my Surface tablet and a lapdesk. The stand has anti-slip rubber feet at the bottom, so it doesn't move around when I use it on the lapdesk. The stand itself is really sturdy and has many angles you can position that is similar to the Wacom Cintiq.

I love my iPad Pro- my simple solution for a stand to set it on when I draw is: I bought a 4 inch binder and stuck a piece of shelving material on the binder surface ( the kind you line kitchen shelves with to prevent dishes sliding around during an earthquake!) so the iPad doesn't slide around. The angle is very comfortable. I learned this tip in a botanical art class for detailed colored pencil drawing-

Nice review and comparison! Also, I am wondering if you have experience with the surface book line and if put it against iPad pro and Cintiq, where will you put it for drawing? I am considering the surface book line since I need a pc for my engineering work anyway. Should I go for an iPad pro with a regular PC laptop, or you believe a Surface book should be good enough for some painting and photo editing? I mean there is a 15-inch opinion, I consider that is a plus. Cintiq is possible but it is too pricy for me as a hobbyist in my opinion:)

Hey Brad, thanks for the video. Curious how you navigate file exports from the iPad back to your Mac and vice-versa. Would be extra helpful to see a demo of the whole iCloud / file exchange / back and fourth aspect. Essentially, files are never done until they are flattened and there are always "changes". That said, I have a Wacom 24 and find I can not work on it for long because my eyes start going blurry. Wondering if the iPad is easier on the eyes in the course of a day.

I love my iPad Pro, love the mobile aspect and Procreate. The only thing missing is a good animation app. Every app I've tried has major lacks.I know there are some good ones on the Mac, but it lacks portability if you can't just take your iPad and work anywhere, which is important to me as I'm only doing this on my own time.

I use the zugu stand and protective cover for my ipad pro. It provides the angle you have on that Park stand and several more angles. It uses magnets to form stable stand adjustments that stay put. I recommend it. Im on my second zugu, having wornout the first on after 3 years.

Great video man - you said you have your Cintiq hooked up to a MacBook Pro, I'm just wondering what kind of spec your MacBook is and if it works fluently with the Cintiq? I was using a Cintiq Pro 15 with a 2015 MacBook Pro and noticed a horrendous amount of lag (and flickering at times). I recently upgraded to a 2018 MacBook Pro with 32GB ram and i7 processor, just wondering if you have anything similar?

Thank you for that video. I personnaly also have an iPad Pro and a Cintiq 22HD (older model than yours). I've been enjoyig a lot my Cintiq, and I still use it a lot. But since I work on my iPad with the Apple Stylus, I have noticed a lot of pros for the iPad. The retina screen is so confortable, that by comparison, the pixels on my Cintiq are really very visible. The colors on my Cintiq are also less bright than on my iPad's screen. But what is really more important to me is the stylus. The Apple Pencil really looks like a pencil. It's quite a bit heavier than a real pen, but it's fine ; and, the tip of the Pencil is absolutely not moving from the base while on my Cintiq, the tip is slightly moving, I mean it's not a lot, but I feel the difference. So now, my preference goes to the iPad.

Kinda digged the slanted stand as it’s also functional for laptops. I do have an iPad Pro 11in though, the descriptions seems to be only for 12.9in, would it really be an issue? Would you happen to know if it would work alright? Thanks a lot for this video, thoroughly informative.

Hi, finally a review that compare those two devices. May I ask you: for someone that works basically at home, do you believe that the extra space justify the extra cost of a cintiq pro? I am used to draw on large sheets of paper (a3 and a2) and feel to cluttered on the ipad pro 12.9. Also, how do you compare the feeling of drawing with an iPad Pro+matte screen protector vs the edge glass on the cintiq pro?
@op-z
@op-z 4 года назад
I went with the Ipad and never looked back - in terms of workflow and feeling it's the best next thing to paper. I still draw on paper/scan/bring to Procreate occasionally, but ipad/Procreate/Dropbox make it a breeze

Well, you could try using a cover for the ipad pro that can make it stand if you want to draw more comfortably on your couch for example

That is definitely true! I do occasionally use the apple keyboard folio on my lap, but it seems to be better suited for just typing, rather than drawing. Thanks for the tip though! Maybe I'm crazy haha

Around 10:08 you've got a bit of dual audio going on and it's a bit distracting. Also around 9:12 it goes to a rear shot of the stand that isn't really explained, maybe that audio was meant for that shot? Hoping to be helpful for your future videos. Thanks for the breakdown!
