Great, informative video. I own 3 vintage Wade & Butcher straight razors and, while they each generally provide a smooth comfortable shave, they can take a bit of extra care and effort to hone. The ILR stone would be a godsend. I have managed to amass a very nice vintage straight razor collection through careful eBay shopping. But, at my income level, I cannot justify the expense of a collection of quality whetstones. I have a set of small Arkansas stones (soft, hard and black); a very small con vexed cuticle I purchased from Jarrod, an Chinese natural stone from "Whippeddog" and an assortment of unbranded Chinese synthetics. I manage to keep a decent edge on all of my razors, but, a higher quality finishing stone would do wonders.

Is it possible to get one side of the razor sharper than the other side? When I shave I feel one side of my face cuts better than the other side. Could that just be dominant hand vs non dominant hand shaving?
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 13 дней назад
@@jasonclapp5051 - the cutting edge is the product of BOTH sides converging to form a single apex so there’s only one edge regardless of what side of the razor is touching your face. You’re correct that it is most likely the difference in how each hand moves the razor across your face. The key is to keep the spine of the razor close to your face. Watch my first pass how the spine is nearly touching my face as I drag it down. That’s the difference between your right and left hand. 👊🏻🙌🏻
@ColinKnight
@ColinKnight 4 месяца назад
Dr. Matt, I've noticed on a few Wade and Butchers that they seem to lag in sharpness until about the 5k or 8k range. Then, they "catch up" and feel about like one would expect from any other razor. I don't know if this is just my technique, maybe I'm rushing that old Sheffield steel, or maybe it's something other people have noticed.
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 4 месяца назад
I've noticed that on some other razors as well. I think all that matters is the finished product. I hear guys on the forums saying if you can't shave with your razor after 1K, then you have work to do as the bevel is not yet set. Idiots!!!
@ColinKnight

Dr.Matt, great videos. I currently have a Naniwa 5k & 8k super stone. Been trying to decide on a stone to finish on. Would the ILR be a good choice to use after those stones? What are your thoughts?
@drmatt357
@drmatt357 4 месяца назад
It would be a good stone. I don’t know where you’re at in your sharpening journey but if you’re fairly new, I’d suggest a synthetic finisher and get good with that progression to where you can consistently get good edges on multiple razors… then move to some natural finishers. The synthetic finisher to have is the Naniwa 12K Super Stone.

Hello Sir! I just had to leave a comment to thank you for all the great instructional videos you have made. I got my first straight razor from an antique store earlier this month and a gold dollar that was supposed to come "shave ready" from razor emporium but had nicks in the blade visible to the naked eye(they did sort of make it up to me by sending me a ralf aust for 60 bucks and telling me to keep the Gold Dollar). After watching your videos i purchased three stones pre your recommendations a King delux 1k, Nortion two sided 4k and 8k, and a naniwa 12k. I followed all the steps you outlined, and I was able to get both razors shave ready and hanging hairs sharp. Both also passed the shave test with flying colors! Thanks again your the great instruction Dr Matt.
