My father served as a paratrooper from 1940 (aged 18) until 1945 (aged 22), from theatres in Norway, North Africa, Russia, France, Italy (Monte Cassino), and finally in Holland. He was wounded several times. His contemporary photographs never show him, and his comrades that optimistic, as these (propaganda) films suggest. The authentic photos show self-certain, but worn-out faces. He was prisoner of war until as late as 1948 in England. Then he became an dedicated detective police officer. But as long as he lived (until 2009), everyone knew him as a charming entertainer, an engaged instructor, and an nurturing father. That generation was anything but lost.

My Grandfather was "conscripted", (expected to join the party as a teacher, policeman, postal worker, etc), into the Waffen SS as a school teacher in a remote Freisian Island. He died on the retreat in a place called Stűlweissenberg, North of Lake Balaton. Now called Székesfehérvár. The whole regiment was wiped out as they had no tank support, supply lines or communications, (he was a Panzer Grenadier). My Mother only knew of his death fifteen years later..told by a surviving member of his regiment who feined death. She lived with this for all her life and killed herself, on her own, in Normandy, many, many years later. There was one other man who survived and was badly injured. Basically, anyone who was alive was bayonetted or hanged to save rounds. My Grandfather was, I believe, 44 years old and sent to the front. With 3 months training, he stood no chance. This was in the last few months of the European War, April '44, perhaps? His name was Jansen Eggers, from the Island of Sylt. I would love to have met him. There is always another side to any story. The victors always write the history books. Any information would be gladly appreciated about my Grandfather. Thank you!

@@stevecowham1017 Yeah its funny how everything changes but stays the same. My own Grandfather fought on the side of the allies in WW1, volunteered at 14 (lied about his age) and ended up in pioneer corp doing the very dangerous job if venturing out into no mans land to spy on the enemy. He was an orphan who lived in a boys home. He was taken prisoner in 17 and sent to work in a coal mine near what was then Stettin, which is known as something else and is in Poland I think. He survived and went on to have a very long army career, including service in WW2, training new recruits. My Great Grandfather was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, with the 36th Ulster Division, again WW1.

When I was working in the ER, about 15 years ago, I met a gentleman who was a member of the Fallschirmjäger. He made something like 14 combat jumps (his words), was injured on the last one and ended up recovering in Texas in a POW hospital. After the war, he went back to (West) Germany, actually worked on the German side of Kennedy's security detail during his trip to Berlin and was a German investigator for the US military police. He finally retired to my hometown, where I eventually got to meet this fascinating gentleman. Sadly, he passed away about seven years ago, and I only got to talk to him a few times. I would have loved to have sat down and listen to his life story.

Trevor N. Dupuy, a noted American military analyst, US Army Colonel, and author of numerous books and articles, studied the comparative performance of the soldiers of World War II. On average, he concluded, 100 German soldiers were the equivalent of 120 American, British or French soldiers, or 200 Soviet soldiers. “On a man for man basis,” Dupuy wrote, “German ground soldiers consistently inflicted casualties at about a 50 percent higher rate than they incurred from the opposing British and American troops under all circumstances [emphasis in original]. This was true when they were attacking and when they were defending, when they had a local numerical superiority and when, as was usually the case, they were outnumbered, when they had air superiority and when they did not, when they won and when they lost.” Other respected military historians, such as Martin van Creveld and John Keegan, have made comparable assessments. Max Boot draws a similar conclusion in his detailed book, War Made New. “Man for man,” writes this influential author and military historian, “the Wehrmacht was probably the most formidable fighting force in the world until at least 1943, if not later. German soldiers were even known for showing more initiative than the soldiers of democratic France, Britain, and the United States.
@toddeutsey387
@toddeutsey387 5 лет назад
Some of this is due to Germans fighting a defensive battle in depth. They knew the ground and they were formidable in their own right. They did not have the air power or supply the allies had in Europe. The Allies were green and most units only saw first action after D-Day. My opinion is the Germans were formidable foe though they had some advantages in the defense but they could never have hoped to win. They were doomed when they invaded Russia. The soldiers fought a good fight but they had no chance of winning or competing with USA in supply or manpower. The Brits were ok but they were not a challenge to Germans alone, they needed a big brother. If Brits would have invaded Normandy alone they would not have invaded. The U.S. entering war the key to victory, period. They relieved pressure on Russians and Brits. Rating each would break down something like: German tanks 7 plus, Russian 8 plus, USA 5, Brits 5. The infantry: German 8, Russian 4 or 5, Brits 6.5, USA 7. Air: German 6, Russian 3 then 7 later, USA 9. Support units German 5 (mainly horse drawn), Russian 7, Brits 8, USA 8 plus. resources German 4, Russian 5, Brits 7, USA 8. just my opinion whats yours? Thanks!

got their asses kicked on the east though lol. at Minsk the sky was filled with the smoke of burning german trucks, guns, and ammunition they were setting fire to, there were the bodies of tens of thousands of dead work horses, the Nazis couldn't rout any faster and still got encircled, the soviets had a hard time even following them by the trail of burning equipment they were leaving. The panicking Nazis were just wandering around the forests and fields east of minsk until they gave up. Thank god for the soviets. The Nazis would absolutely still be in power if it weren't for the sacrifices of the red army. The Germans had that unbelievable confidence which couldn't shook until it was obvious they weren't the superhumans they told themselves they were.
@TheGoodChap
@TheGoodChap 4 года назад
@Supreet Virk Truthful Sikh a lot of that has been debunked by researchers. At Stalingrad they had nowhere to go. Either stay in the warm houses and fight for them as best they could or retreat into the permafrost and dig trenches and set up camp. The Germans believes especially early on that Soviet slavs were subhuman. They didn't even allow BELGIAN hardcore Nazi volunteers (wallonia) to be incorporated into the ss because they weren't properly Aryan. If the Germans we're winning in 41 with German strength why would they give captured slavs the honor of fighting with them as equals? Maybe in 44 they would have, that's around when they let wallonia legion join ss and their arrogance was quickly fading

@@TheGoodChap It is historically incorrect to say that "the Germans" believed that. Hitler and Himmler did. Even the ultra-extreme NS ideologue Alfred Rosenberg was in favour of taking up Ukrainians et al. into the German forces in the East from the get-go. He rightly observed that the Soviet Union was made up of numerous peoples, many of whom had a million reasons to hate Stalin, and that the Germans were initially welcomed as liberators. His appeals were ignored by Hitler again and again. As one might imagine, this attitude was even more prevalent in the Wehrmacht. A certain Claus von Stauffenberg commented time and time again that the oppressed Soviet peoples should be well-treated, offered independent states and hope for the future, and taken up into the German fighting forces.

There's a RU-vid video of a lip reader transcribing silent film footage of British soldiers in WW1. The same thing could be done here with a German lipreader. Would be fascinating to know.

@Warfare Panzer It looks very very similar to a tank that the US developed towards the end of WWII. Looks almost exactly alike.

@@IM_MILKO then it's rather a rare model. Perhaps it's of inferior caliber used for anti-tank purpose, but then it's too high. I have to look up on google for the different versions of the US Army 105 howitzer.

My grandfather moved to poland from portugal in 1938, he was in western poland when the invasion began and was taken back to germany as a POW, he joined the waffen SS and was deployed to auschwitz in february of 1941, he was there until the soviets invaded and had to flee to iran, he then lived in the kurdistan region of iraq for many years and unfortunately passed away in northern iraq in 1975. all the same, I respect the man and the life he lived. I do believe the SS was one of the greatest military groups in the world

They're enjoying American cigarettes, which would have been sheer luxury compared to the end-war Wehrmacht cigarettes they would have been lucky to be issued. This was a huge deal even if they didn't do the damage. They would likely all be prisoners or dead within a few months from now.

He killed them because he had a schedule to keep. He didn't have the proper facilities. He had 2 options, let them go back to their lines and fight them again in a few days, ot get rid of them. Could it have been influenced by his SS training? Maybe. More than than likely he just made a quick decision.
