Waggler Fishing with a Short Piece of Elastic in the Rig

‪@MarkWintleFishing‬ One interesting variation on waggler fishing is to incorporate a short (4") piece of pole elastic (no. 4 to no. 6) in the rig to act as an extra shock absorber when fishing fine. This rig also incorporates a finer piece of line below the elastic to connect to the hook length. I read about this idea in Jim Baxter's excellent book, The Rising Antenna (calmproductions.com)
Jim's new book, Stick Float Wizardry, is now available

Loved the video, We have a small RU-vid channel in Thailand and been thinking about using braid on the cage feeder and incorporating a small piece of elastic into the rig to help preventing bumping the fish off in a similar style to this so got us thinking, awesome!!

I've often wondered about something on the lines of this " given me food for thought.

Mark Love you videos find them really really interesting, And many thanks for doing them, A modern-day Twist on the pole elastic is feeder gum and attaching the hook length as if you would put a rig onto a dacron connector, Have you watched this video Drennan Feeder Fishing for Dace ( Alan Scotthorne ) in it he shows you how he sets the rig up using feeder gun, Might be a lot tidier than the elastic and not so much stretch, Many Thanks Richie.

I think with feeder rigs then powergum is better but on this waggler rig pole elastic is perfect with it well away from the hook length. It's a method I need to try more in the summer with fish upp in the water.

I do this when fishing conventional feeders for bream at Ferry Meadows. Bream have soft mouths and I was losing 1 in 3 fish, but I wasn't having the same problem when fishing an elasticated method feeder, so I added a couple of inches of pole elastic before my hook-length. Problem solved.

Brill thanks for sharing Mark, I’ve been thinking about using lighter hooks to nylon on the bottom end but I am a bit heavy handed and this is just the thing, I’ll give it a go and let you know how I get on.

Interesting. Years ago I used a rig on the Stour at Chibbs Pool, Throop which was a link legering rig with a very light shotting and a 2lb hook link tied to a power gum link. It worked a treat for Chub that had seen everything in cold clear conditions. The buffer affect stopped the risk of breaking on the strike and if you were careful with a soft Avon rod you could land serious Chub doing it. A leger stop just above the hook with the cheese paste moulded around it with the hook clear hanging just below sorted out many of the Chub backing off with the bait held lightly in their mouths. I know this isn't what you're describing but thought you may find it interesting.

It is interesting. This video has thrown up a number of ideas regarding incorporating power gum or pole elastic into various float and leger rigs. On my long list of videos to do there is at least one on persuading chub to take a legered bait; quite when I'll do it I don't know but eventually!

@@MarkWintleFishing As you are interested, here's something else concerning hooking Chub on a leger rig. I have found that if you use a light bobbin ( I make my own) in conjunction with a quiver tip you can time the strike better. Typically I have about a 12 inch drop ( the balance against the flow is controlled with shot and fine tuning with AAA BB etc is possible) then watch the tip as usual. When you get a tap, watch the bobbin. Very often it dithers around as the Chub mouths the bait but eventually, many times you will get a good positive lift and hook the Chub. I use this a great deal on the Stour but obviously far less on the Avon where often a bolt rig is the only real way due to the flow and drifting rubbish ( not a nice ) way to fish. Many years ago I came across Terry Lampard at Cut Mill above Sturminster Newton using a bottle top but doing roughly the same ( about 1980) so it's hardly my idea but you don't see many people doing it. Try it. It works!

I've achieved a similar thing with a bow as well as holding some spare line in my left hand. Come th esummer I'll do a proper video on this.
@andrewjackson9603
@andrewjackson9603 Год назад
@@MarkWintleFishing Yes I've done that as well. The bobbin allows you to be a little more relaxed though. The other thing I do when not using a bobbin is to gently move the rod towards the fish when you get a knock essentially reducing the resistance. All these things work to some extent but the bobbin is best for my money.

Very interesting idea Mark. Do you think this maybe an idea for Grayling, which as everybody knows are masters at inextricably bumping the hook?
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing Год назад
I think the opposite approach may be better for grayling; I use a more powerful rod, small hooks (18 or 20) that are usually barbless (much easier top unhook on the bank) and strike hard and play the fish hard. I think the problem with grayling is that their mouths are very tough so the common approach of using realtive thick wire barbed hooks often means that the hook hasn't penetrated properly hence them coming adrift. With skimmers and roach the mouths are much softer so the hook is more likely to pull out which the use of elastic tries to address.
@johnsmith-px1sr
@johnsmith-px1sr Год назад
surely making it less direct to the hook may slow the strike down for a split second and therefore lead to more missed bites? maybe a microlite rather than a titan would be better...actually, thinking about it, using the softer rod is the same as putting the elastic splice in..
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing Год назад
Think of it as thought-provoking idea. I've now used it three times, When lots of very small fish (ones of an ounce or less) are about I tended to miss some bites but not when the fish were 3oz to a pound. I do have some very soft rods ie Microlites but playing the fish isn't quite the same. I suspect I won't use the elastic generally but may try it again in teh summer for up in the water tare fishing.

Hi Mark, Just received a copy of Ivan Marks on match fishing from Coch y Bonddu books. Opened it up and it’s signed by the man himself. Quite emotional.

interesting idea. how are you fixing your line to the loops in the elastic please - is it loop to loop or a knot. thanks
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing Год назад
I've just been using loop to loop but I can't see why using a knot (tucked blood knot or Grinner) wouldn't work just as well.

Does it causes any tangles on the cast ?
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing Год назад
I haven't had any tangles though I'd caution against casting into a facing wind. I feather the float down which tends to straighten out the rig.
@robertwren8878
@robertwren8878 Год назад
Ok so why is the elastic not above the float and use less shotting? Im also thinking fish safety whereby if the line broke above the elastic and fish getting caught up around snags or even wild fowl succumbing to it. Just saying! 👍
@MarkWintleFishing
@MarkWintleFishing Год назад
The main line to the elastic is 2lb Maxima which breaks at nearly 3lbs, then the elastic which breaks at 2lbs, then finer line to the hook length at 1.5lbs, then a 1lb hook length, so the line shouldn't break above the elastic. The elastic won't have the same effect above the float - it will cushion the strike against the float but not against the fish. It's not a rig I would use for big fish, or with heavy tackle or in snaggy situations.
