The difference in number of horses pulling wagons or stage coaches in these 50’s and 60’s films is there were B quality westerns.. 6 horses meant there was more in the budget.

That's funny - when he did that I threw my arms up and said "WTF, not again?". It seems like some kind of standard script direction but it's totally unrealistic. Nobody would do that.... and I went through a similar experience - not the extreme depicted but I was out of water and carried the canteen for half a day in 90+ degrees before hitting potable water. Besides, the last thing I thought about was tossing my canteen.
