Thank you for doing this video. It was a game changer for me getting my Trek Domane SL 5 up and running on the Kickr. It was hard to find such an informative video. It's all a bit overwhelming just starting out, being a newbie with all the different variables out there. Set up was a breeze and worked fine on my bike and trainer thanks to you. I also did have to contact Wahoo to get the adapter kit. Their customer service was awesome. I think I received the adapters in 4 days via UPS from the U.S. to me in Canada. Have fun everyone and ride on!
@@ariansafatian6293 Hi Arian. The thru axle that comes with the Kickr Core is not compatible with the Trek Domane SL5. You have to contact Wahoo and tell you you need the adapter and they will ship it to you for free. The Domane is one of few bikes that is not compatible with the through axle they send with the Kickr. I got my Kickr Core last year and that was the case when I bought it.
@@luvGod21 Thanks for your reply Brenda, much appreciated. Yes I reached out to Wahoo. I hope it will make a difference as some people seem to have been able to put their Cervelo/Trek bikes on the home trainer with the adapter that come with the Kickr Core although it wasn't ideal whereas I couldn't screw in the thru axle at all! Just hoping this will be sorted with the new adapter!
thank you alot ! i'm new to biking and purchased my first bike trainer this black friday. Had 0 knowledge beforehand and other video's weren't as clear as this video. It really helped me a lot, thank you !! :d
Hi, thanks for the great information video. I just purchased a Cervelo Aspero GRX RX815 DI2 and it didn’t fit right. This video was exactly what I’m looking for. I will order the kick to be compatible with my Wahoo Kickr. Thanks again.
Hi, thanks for this video. I own a 2022 Giant TCR and only had to change the drive and non drive side bits. I haven't done anything with the cassette and it seems to be working fine??
I am not sure what your question is here. If you are changing the Kickr with the new adapters you should follow the entire process, please refer to Wahoo’s site for compatibility and details.
Hey, awesome video, improved my situation a lot by changing the nut of the freehub. I still have issues to get my gravel bike chain running smoothly on my Shimano CS-R7000 11-speed cassette. I cant switch into the largest ring. Already tried finetuning chain but no chance. I have read some stuff about additional spacer even on 11-speed cassette, do you have any experience on it or tip?
I didn’t need a spacer. I am on a GRX drivetrain. I have to index for the trainer or it is slightly off for me for the highest gear. During the season I recognize this and just do, winter I index it, and come summer re-index for my wheels. Probably not helpful to your situation. If you are doing ERG training as long as you have it running smooth in a couple gears you will be good. Sorry I don’t have a better solution.
Greetings! Did you have to use a spacer with your cassette given you’re using the shimano HG800 11-34? I’m currently using the HG700 11-34 on my Cervelo Aspero and the low gears are vibrating a bit.
I don’t use anything, I am running the cassette that came with the trainer. That being said the lower gears are not perfectly indexed. That being said GRX has a 2.5mm offset compared to a normal chain line to accommodate for the larger tires. I index the shifting to the trainer for the winter, and tune the bike in the spring getting it ready for the road.
Thanks a lot for the video, very useful, unlike official Wahoo instructions. I somehow stuck at an existing axle nut removal step with a new KICKR 2020, it just won't budge. Is there a trick to unscrew it, or mine just came overtightened? Tried both wide and narrow cone wrenches, as well as an adjustable one.
Hey, thanks for the video. I am struggling to get the new spin cap adapter onto the cassette nut since due to the inside cogs of the lock it is to tight. I am using the 11 speed cassette which came with the kickr so I am a bit lost. Any idea? Thanks!
Not sure why that would be an issue. It should just simply slide on. The video shows the original cassette being used, so should just be a matter of placing in on the axle but after installing the cassette. I am on Twitter as ‘paininc’ if you send photos I might have a better idea.
Great video! I got a Kickr Core and I am wondering which axle I should use? The one on my bicycle or the one coming on the box. I have a Checkpoint SL6 carbon 12 cassette speed and I got the hub adapter and everything set up but wondering about the thru axle. Thank you!
The link has the full list of bikes that should be used with the new adapters should be used based on the year of your Kickr and your particular bike. 2021+ Trek Checkpoint Carbon is listed as needing the new adapters support.wahoofitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/4407140853650-KICKR-Compatibility
question, is this only necessary for carbon bikes or all of the 2021+ models? i have a 2021 trek emonda alr 5 and just bought the kickr. i didn’t know about the incompatibility before purchasing it lol
@@JDirom got it, i believe i kept seeing that the carbon ones would crack because of incompatibility so i assumed it was only carbon frames. lol i ended up hooking my emonda alr to it and seems to be working fine but i’m definitely gonna order the updated adapters, AND the tools necessary, just to be on the safe side. i don’t know what exactly i should be looking for to determine that it might not be properly installed. i’m super new to road bikes (cycling in general)
@@ovrxpsd the difference between the adapters in the shape of the end. I didn't notice anything when I rode my Cervelo with the original adapters, but it must have an impact on how the bike is seated in the trainer. Doesn't take long for the adapters to show up, Wahoo does a good job of taking care of its customers.
Thanks for the instructions! Does your kickr vibrate at all under power? I thought they were supposed to be silent but the humming and vibration is way louder than my bike. I'm on my third V5 now...
Mine does not vibrate, and is relatively quiet. Naturally there is some noise, but I hear my fan Moreno than the Kickr. Best of luck with your issue, it is very hard to tell, without hearing the noise.
@@JDirom Thanks for the feedback! Yep, that's what worries me. The vibrations actually travel through the crank and the bike. I can feel them through my legs and bum unfortunately.
No problem. If you can feel the vibrations through the bike something has to be off. I hope you find a solution, also I think contacting Wahoo and sharing some videos of the problem is a good idea. They have always in my experience had good customer service.
In Australia Wahoo doesn't supply the new Cervelo safe adapters for free. Cost is $60 plus $30 postage. Might be cheaper on Ebay. Spoke to Wahoo support about how unsatisfactory this is, got ignored.
For my wahoo KICKR V5 (bought 2020) I bought a gravel bike to run it on the KICKR. The bike has a 12 x 142 thru-axle in the rear. I'm desperate, unfortunately I can't find the original adapter for the 12 x 142 thru axle anymore. Can I use the new KICKR/CORE 142 Thru Axle Adapters for this? So do these adapters replace the old ones?
First of all, great video. One question I hope you can answer: does the new adapter set move the bike more towards the drive side? I have a problem with the chain being to close to the frame when in the smallest rear ring after installing my new bike with sram 12 speed. So if this set moves the bike just a mm or two towards the drive side I might help me get back on the trainer.
I don’t think moves bike position, so much as it sits better in the rear dropout. It might make a mm of difference, but it would be ever so slight. Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you.
Do you need to take the cassette off or can you just put the new adaptor on without changing the internal one? Also, with the new changes can a quick release bike be used on the turbo or do you have to keep changing the cassette thing?
@@JDirom Thanks - I have a new Wahoo - from 2022 Does this make a difference? I seem to be fine with the old adaptors on for my cube axial WS - i am very confused
@@hanbizful the new adapters are for specific bikes such as all Cervelo bikes (the list of bikes in in the description). If you are not on that list you do not need the new adapters as show in this video.
Hi, can jou tell me wich thru axel i have to use. These of my bike with brake discs(the dicker) of these from the kickr (skewer with brake pads, the smal ). Thx
Thanks for the video. Great info.. I’ll do my install tonight for my Domane SL5. You mentioned needing a 17mm cone wrench.. but didn’t see it used in the video.. or did I miss it?
Hey man nice video. I have an issue with a Ridley SLiC ultegra di2, newbie to bikes. When I go to change from the QR to thru axle I can’t attach the spacer given with the adapter kit. My kit doesn’t come with the silver part you have on the drive side. When it’s all attached the cassette rubs the frame still and no one seems to know how to solve the issue
The link I will provide in this comment will link to the unboxing video. There should be a drive side and non-drive side adapter to convert to what I am assuming is 142mm va the thru axle. There are only the two pieces. You won’t have to change the nut as shown in this video. Should be a matter of just sliding over. Hope this helps, if not I am also on Twitter (@paininc) where you can send photos and we can possibly get you sorted. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zaEmBc0ZPB4.html
@@JDirom Thanks. Maybe the issue is I have the kickr core not v5? I will take a look and check the adapter kit I purchased from wahoo (eu.wahoofitness.com/devices/indoor-cycling/parts-components/kickr-142-adapter-buy) I’m quite sure there is no drive side adapter with it. But thanks for the twitter, quite sure I will need to hit you up! 😂
Park Tool makes the lock ring tool. I used Park Tool FR-5.2, you should be able to find it at a local bike shop. It can also be found on Amazon here: amzn.to/34eNkzW
Wahoo indicated that these adapters were incompatible with SRAM. I would submit a ticket, and see what response that they give you. I would be curious to the answer as well.
@@JDirom it seems they have updated the adapters for SRAM which is good! they said: Thanks for reaching out! Your Cervelo Caledonia will work with the KICKR CORE but you will need a couple of things first. First, you will need an XDR/XD Freehub which can be purchased through this link: au.wahoofitness.com/devices/indoor-cycling/parts-components/xdr-xd-freehub-buy Secondly, all Thru-axle Cervelo models require our updated adapters which I'd be happy to send you. If you purchase the KICKR CORE, just let me know and include your preferred shipping address and I'll send the adapters out to you! Kind regards,
I'm preparing to make this change on my cervelo once the adapters arrive from Wahoo. Do I need cone wrenches or can I use something else? Thank you for your help! Without this video I would have thought I set my bike up just fine as the adapters the wahoo comes with do work (but apparently they're not good in the long term?).
Cone wrenches are the best tool for the job, and are generally inexpensive. That being said you can likely get away with a regular wrench if you are careful, but you do run the risk of rounding things off or having it slip. Hope that helps.
@@JDirom Okay, thank you! Another question...Once the new adapters are installed, do I use the skewer the wahoo came with (quick release) or my bike's skewer (thru axle skewer). This may be a dumb question, but it's been boggling me a bit. The way I have it currently set up is using the 142 adapter and my bike's thru axle. I've heard not to use the skewer that's on your bike because the trainer can chew it up. Thoughts? Thanks!
What do you mean by you have damage? If you mean you have damaged the frame, there is likely little that can be done at this point, other than take it to a carbon repair specialist to see if it is possible to repair it.
I'm looking at purchasing a Kickr for my 2018 Cervelo that I'm currently building. You mentioned that SRAM xdr won't work. Do you know of any work around for this?
The XDR Free hub body has a 1.8mm spacer, I don’t know how that compares to the replacement adapters, but likely it is that fraction too wide like the original adapters. I assume they will be adapting this to work at some point, but to my knowledge they haven’t as of yet. I will make a post/video if that changes.
@@JDirom I ended up purchasing a Kickr Core and there was fortunately no compatibility issues putting on a XDR freehub and then using my SRAM 12 speed cassette with cervelo frame.
Ok, I did not receive a drive side adapter. I have two chrome adapters (I think), neither of which have threads or notches for using a wrench for tightening. Secondly, I have no idea what version Kickr I have since there is no mention anywhere on the box or included documentation (purchased from REI). The QR code in the instruction manual tells me it has exceeded the allowable number of scans. I need something to go right...this is the second "smart" trainer I have tried to set up. Oh, and I have a 21 Ceverlo P series. Help!
You have to submit a support ticket directly to Wahoo to get the new adapters. I would just submit it, if you bought the trainer new recently. Worst case scenario is you have extras. How do your parts compare to those shown at 0:46?
@@JDirom the unit came with the old skewer type axle fittings and the additional parts were like the ones you removed. So you are correct I will have to order the additional parts. Stinks because I am on a triathlon training plan and need to get my workouts in. Great video by the way...otherwise I would still be scratching my head. Thanks a ton.
@@dalooch121 no problem. Wahoo was quick, when I put in a ticket for them they sent them via courier at no charge, and took less than a week (I live in Canada, and sent from the US). Hopefully you will be back on the trainer quick. Best of luck with your triathlon training plan, and have a great race season!
once the new adpaters are on to suit cervelo/domane etc, are the previsously compatible bikes still ok to be used with the updated adapters? I'm swapping mine out to suit my 2021 Domane disc, would for example my girlfriends Canyon still be compatible? or Would the old adapters need put on?
Good question. Would you be able to mount the bike? Yes, the Canyon should mount, but is it ultimately good for the frame is likely what you are asking. That would be something to ask Wahoo when you submit the support ticket to get the adapters sent to you. Sorry I don’t have a better answer, and please do let us know what Wahoo says on this matter. Cheers.
@@JDirom I have now swapped the adapters and have my bike fitted, your video was a big help so thanks again for the upload. I am going to follow up with another email to Wahoo to enquire. First impression it looks as though the new adapter is needed to stop the shoulder rubbing off the inside face of the chain stay and seat stay joint? So provided the recess is there to suit the O/D of the protruding shaft they should all fit.... best guess for now - (crude) video here if it helps anyone: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MF_t6I-vk0k.html I shall let you know what Wahoo reply with.
@@JDirom quite a prompt reply from Wahoo support - "Hi Robert Thanks for getting in touch and yes the old adapter will need to be fitted in order to use a previously compatible bike e.g Specialized, Canyon etc etc. Please do let me know if you have any other questions. Kind regards"
@@rob3rt891 thanks for sharing. That is unfortunate, makes it hard to share a trainer for people in similar situations as your own. But an important piece of information to users of the Wahoo. Thanks again for sharing this!
Good question, but unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. I imagine because the old versions are still used for other bikes like Canyon, Specialized, etc, they might not be sent with. Please do let us know if they do arrive with your Kickr Core, it will be valuable information for other. Enjoy the new trainer! Cheers.
