I rarely ever comment on videos, but I just had to on this one, especially since this is my hometown. I was born and raised in Waiʻanae, from Makaha to Nanakuli. We are kānaka ʻōiwi, (hundreds of years my family has lived in Waiʻanae) and as Native Hawaiians, we truly do aloha ALL races and over the years have mixed with ALL of them. I have to say that you did a really good job with the video, very respectful to our home and had some beautiful cinematic shots for sure. But if Iʻm being completely honest, this is making me really really sad, only because I personally have so many of my own ʻohana that originated from here that can no longer afford to live here and were forced to move away because of the rising cost of living, and having to compete for local jobs against people that donʻt even live here. Unless they were, like I was, fortunate enough to receive a Hawaiian Homestead Leasehold, most of us here struggle just to keep the lights on and food on the table. To receive a Homestead itʻs true that you "donʻt" own the land, but in the Hawaiian way of thinking, the land is NEVER ours to "own" in the first place. And this is the biggest issue with us kānaka and the way we view ʻoutsidersʻ buying up more of our land. We are only stewards of this land, tasked with the Kuleana (responsibility) to care for: the ʻāina (land) from mauna (mountain) to the kai (ocean), kānaka (people) and ʻakua (from where our divine power comes from). This is truly why Hawaiʻi is so beautiful and where the ALOHA spirit comes from... the "balance" between ʻāina, kānaka and ʻakua is what our ancestors have taught us, and very few of us still hold dear. People may see Hawaiʻi and think, "oh itʻs my dream to live in paradise, to surf the waves of Makaha, swim with dolphins and sea turtles, and watch the sunset every day from my back yard," but unless they understand kānaka ways, our ʻike kupuna, then the beauty of these islands WILL cease to exist. My hope is that, any person that desires to move and live here, will make it their FIRST priority to understand the ways of our people first, so that the true spirit of Aloha and Nā Poʻe Hawaiʻi never ever dies.

I could listen to this guy talk about Hawaii all day. Just seeing all the B-roll footage of everyday Hawaii is worth watching for.

Lived in Wai'anae from 2005 to 2012. Attended Ma'ili ES, Wai'anae IS, and Wai'anae HS graduating there. It wasn't as bad as people claimed it to be. Everyone was nice, yeah people broke balls every now and then but we all respected each other and got along at the end of the day. As a Micronesian, my people get a lot of stigma but Wai'anae was a welcoming place for me.

This is very humbling to see Waianae being talked about in a better way. I am born and raised from here and you even passed my house in sea country 😂 Its crazy to see my home town on youtube. I appreciate this so much, Mahalo Nui Loa 🙏

Lived in Makaha & Waianae since I was 10 ♡ My Tutu owns a house on Makaha Valley Rd. which is my childhood home. She owns another home in Waianae, since the one in Makaha is basically falling apart 😞. Because my mom remarried into military I now live in California, longer than I've lived in Hawaii now, but I will always call Oahu my home. My whole ohana, my heart resides there ♡ I get mixed feelings whenever I visit because the Hawaii I knew has changed, the once beautiful views are now blocked by looming skyscrapers, and the roads always gridlocked. Tourism is both a blessing & a curse.

I spent two years in the Makaha Valley in the 80's as my hub was stationed at Schofield Barracks. I miss the scent most of all...ocean and plumeria. And if you drive down Farrington at the right time of day the odor of Hulihuli chicken. Thank you for helping some of us revisit. It looks like the area has come upon hard times. I have only good memories of the locals. The people were very kind and inclusive.

Great memories, Waianae is a family friendly area, when you treat the people in that area with aloha, they will show you the aloha right back. It was funny that you were taking a drive on to orange street, I was born and raised in Makaha on orange street, up until 2001 when I turned 21, now 44 my parents decided I should move away to Alaska, so I did. I own my own house and have my own family, But lately been thinking about moving back home to Makaha when I retire. Much Mahalos again!! 🤙🤙🤙

Waianae has the highest population of Hawaiians - consists 85% statiscally speaking. It's always a good feeling taking a drive thru Waianae seeing our people being the majority. Unfortunately, we faced many downs than ups but we're still here. I remember back in the 90's Waianae was rough and the meth (aka Ice) epidemic was bad. Meth ruined a lot of our people who had great talents and genius minds. But it was short lived because of poor choices. A lot of the homes that are distressed or seem neglect are the effects of drug use. Other than that, Waianae is a beautul town just knowing the majority who reside there is our people. The "State of Hawaii" Governement should grant all of Waianae as Hawaiian homelands but keep drugs OUT!!! Just imagine Waianae being the ABSOLUTE stronghold for Hawaiians to create their own system - build Kamemeha schools. I mean I find it funny Government built Kam schools far from where the majority of our people reside making it inconvenient...??? Waianae should be bought or given to only Hawaiians (no offense to the Haole's - I love them too🤙)

I lived with my Tutu (great grandmother) in Waianae in a Quansit Hut metal house. My Tutu was born in 1906 and spoke to me in fluent Hawaiian. She never read Hawaiian she was old school and Olelo her history through talking story. My mom went to elementary junior high and high school in 50s & 60s in Waianae. My father is Caucasian and military so we moved to mainland and I had to grow up in CA. I have a big heart for my original hometown. Mahalo nui for sharing this 🤙🏼

Aloha brother! I was born and raised in Waianae Valley. Graduated from Waianae High School! Moved to Seattle in 1984. My mom still lives in Nanakuli on Farrington Hwy across Zubland. We moved back home for 10 years then back to Seattle. People use to say Waianae was the worst side of the island. I tell them my kids walked to school Nanaikapono! My kids was more safe there then here in the mainland. Thanks for sharing my beautiful side of the island. I miss it!

I'm from Makaha and "Pray for Sex Beach" got it's name because someone painted "Pray for Sets" on the rock by the tide pool. Eventually it became "pray for sex" cuz I think someone crossed out letter t and put x.... but you wouldn't know that unless you were in Makaha way back in the day. I was there when there was a Coronets market. By now I think that red paint must have faded in the sun completely

I was a Searider in the early '90's. I have a great love for Waianae

Waianae as well as the rest of the "West Side" is a beautiful coastal and mountainous region of Oahu. Having grown up in Hau'ula on the other side of the island, I never traveled much to the West Side except for sports, parties and fishing. As an adult, I worked for a short period in Nanakuli and got to work with some local boys from there and getting to know them, we shared identical experiences growing up. Working for QLCC for 10ish years I was able to spend numerous occasion's in the Waianae moku with the various programs and grew to love the place and the people. Otherwise thanks for the great effort you put into your videos. No one is recognizing the cultural nuances of each neighborhoods, as most video makers are not local or create buzz hype videos about top 10 lists

Subscribed! Great video! Once I clicked, I couldn't stop watching! My wife is born/from Honolulu! Hawaii is my favourite place on earth! I remember seeing people do U-turns in the middle of the road and no honking or rage, only shaka being thrown. I could be "dispatched" for the rest of my life in the North Shore with the food trucks, Pupukea motocross park, and surfing and be beyond happy! HAHA! One day... hopefully we'll be calling you, so I won't have any big heat bills anymore trying to keep her Hawaiian blood from turning to molasses here in Canada!

This is fascinating since I haven't been to Hawaii since 1967. I lived in Makaha from age 9 to 12 (1964 to 1967) while my father was stationed in Pearl Harbor. We lived in a little house on Makau Street (now just a vacant lot). It was an idyllic time and I have a lot of good memories of Hawaii. There was some resentment towards outsiders even back then, but it wasn't bad and I had many friends during my time there. The movie "Hawaii" based on James Michener's novel was filmed in part on the beach just past Makaha. It was in the summer and we kids would wait on the beach for the ship with the actors to pass by on its way to the set. We also got to watch them filming part of the movie at the beach. There was a Dole pineapple refinery there and the water fountains at the refinery had pineapple juice instead of water. My father was a diver and he and I would go shelling on the reefs at low tide, sometimes at night. I remember how beautiful Pokai Bay was at night when there was a full moon. Farrington Highway was just a two-lane road and I don't recall seeing any new construction or subdivisions in the area. It's too bad that the island seems to be overdeveloped in a lot of areas. It is a rare gem and should be kept in as pristine condition as possible.

I love how happy you get when you get a Shaka. I'm the same way, especially if I get a few in a day it really just makes me happy🤙🤙🏼🤙🏾

This brings back memories driving from Waipahu to my aunt and uncle's house in Waianae down Farrington Hwy. and then go further to watch the surfers in Makaha.

Wow. Visits to my old home area. Thanks. Poke at Tamura's. Teaching at several of those schools. BBQ at Rest Camp. Runs in Makaha Valley. Watching 14 waterfalls in the rainy season from my bedroom window. Collected lots of memories in those 9 years. One Christmas Day I walked from the Korean Buddhist Temple where I lived in Waianae down the 7-Eleven Road through Kaena Point to Haleiwa! No cap. It was HOT! hahaha. Took all day. Decided to take the buses through town to get back to Waianae. Great adventure. Thanks for the video and best wishes from Cambodia.

Born n raised Waianae Hawaii my mother owned the newspaper called the leeward coaster and my father was the press secretary to senator Daniel K Inouye and later to Mayor Frank Fasi. My brother and I graduated Waianae High School. I left 1995 and we try and go home from time to time and this video made me very home sick. I need to come home! We lived Waianae Valley Road on Kawaili place and then Iniki place.

Greetings from Russia! Buddy, I stumbled upon your video by chance while checking out if there was anything on RU-vid about Waianae. I found one of your videos and got hooked on your storytelling. My family and I once stayed in Waianae, Oahu, without knowing much about the area. It turned out to be a great experience. Despite us being white and from Russia, the locals were really friendly. At first, when we visited the beach, some locals approached us, asking who we were and what we were doing there. But as soon as they learned we were Russians and not Americans, they instantly warmed up to us, gifted us a cool T-shirt, and welcomed us to the area. It was a wonderful experience in a nice neighborhood with great people. Usually, people are wary of Russians, but here it was quite hospitable and safe, it seemed to me.

I've been surfing for 20 years and have visited Hawaii twice. I've never surfer either time because of the natural power of the Hawaiian waters. The reef, the currents, the locals, and the wildlife. There is so much to consider. Without local knowledge, I don’t paddle out. Hopefully, one day.

I just got back from there, I lived in Makaha for 2 years at the Makaha Valley Towers. And I worked at the secret squirrel place your talking about. lol I miss it down there and I was treated very well by the locals cause I respected them( Like I was taught to do with anybody) and they showed me love in return.

I'm from Kailua but been living Maili for 35yrs. Marks place @ the Comp center is great. Love his fish plates too. You can have functions up there. The 604 @ Pilila'au is great too.

Best beaches on the island. Be respectful and nothing but love out here. It’s going through a lot of gentrification right now. Grew up in Ewa now living in Pokia. Love it out here.

I worked in Honolulu in.the 90s....Haole from NYC. ...the Waianae painters tried to disguise wood putty as Le Hing Mui...Love and miss you antique bottle hunterz...Aloha Westsiders...I went home...you're welcome...lol Lahaina will haunt my Hawaiian heart forever.

I know this is at least the second time I've watched this vlog. Thanks for posting it. I miss Waianae. Lived there most of my 9 years in Hawai'i. It's been more than 13 years since I left. I miss the wonderful smells and the feel of the atmosphere there. Taught in schools there, ran there in Makaha Valley, created three bilingual Hawaiian-English books there. I miss the wonderful people I met there. Loved that ride (I used the bus so didn't notice much about the traffic) arriving back home to Makaha/ Waianae. It's a longing feeling now, but happy I had the experience of the Waianae side. Best wishes from Cambodia.

When my wife and I visited Oahu for our honeymoon last year, we stayed at Aulani and made a point to get out of all the “touristy” stuff and venture out to see more of the local places. Dunno if it counts but Countryside Cafe was some of the best food we had while out there. Everyone inside was staring at us when we entered since we stuck out like a sore thumb, but man that place was great. I miss Oahu!

When I visited Hawaii, I stayed at Wai’anae. It’s such a different vibe from the other parts of the island, it feels much more homey. Very beautiful and the people are super friendly. Traffic though is brutal haha

I was born and raise in Wai'anae, Ma'ili side. I went to Ma'ili Elementary, went to Wai'anae Intermediate. I've been away from Hawaii for about 5 years now for work. Seeing this video and the drive into Nanakuli and Wai'anae brought so much happy memories. I miss my island home. It's so weird seeing it on RU-vid, but I am so glad that I found this video. I was feeling home sick. I have the Kanaka Maoli Flag in my room. I couldn't get the State flag because they sold out and I didn't have time to locate one from the same store. Sadness.

Mahalo, I watched this one to see home, you zipped by, the Waianae apartments next door to the High School. I can remember in the 90’s and before you would never see tourists unless they were lost and even then they were leaving quick with there windows up and doors locked 😜. And the only grocery store was the Waianae Store (ask Bu), to get your poi 🤙🏼. Looks like progress came and ruined everything (sad). Guess it was just a matter of time 🥲. I lived in one of the low-income complexes there and my baby sister attended Ma'ili Elementary, the neighbors and people were very nice and I remember having to run to the bus stop to catch the 40 to Waipahu High school. Now I stay in Washington, been trying to find time to visit home again.

Back in the late 80s I had few work trips to Oahu at the Naval Air Station. I would drive to Makaha Valley to go play golf or hang with one of mechanics who was staying at the Makaha Beach Cabanas. It had a local vibe and was pretty quiet. So much development since then. Good times, mahalo.

Hi I was raised on Oahu my first 17 of my life. I'm a licensed contractor out of San Diego Ca and I am planning to move back to Oahu in which we will be in Waianae. My parents home is leasehold. My questions is does a leasehold home increase in value even though the land is not included? What I love about where my mother lives is that everybody in here area are real Hawaiian locals.

Good video I gave up on the North Shore 2001, moved to Vegas for 21 years, now I live in the Philippines.

I love this side of the island. It is a hidden gem on the island. There are some rough areas, but when there is hardships that’s how it is. I hope this area stays local and beautiful. I have friends that live back in there behind Kalo.

I really enjoyed this video. I used to live at the Mkaha Beach Cabanas 26 years ago. I also lived all over the Island, from Waikiki to Kailua to Aiea. But Waianae is my favorite for the beaches. I liked that you showed the Sea Country area. I never been over there. When I get back there I am definitely going to that cafe by the little hospital there. lol Thank you for this video.

Love your video. It brings back a lot of memories and is a great Tour of the west side. I lived on Schofield in the early 70's and learned to drive over Kole Kole pass. Spent a lot of time at Rest Camp army beach in the cabins. Learned how to surf, use a trow net, surf fish, night snorkled for Bugs (lobster) and even fished for eels from the bridge over the canal. Made a lot of local and Samoan friends who lived in town when they came to fish off the bridge. I always had a great time and really liked the people. Thanks for the great memories!

I used to live there from 1989 to 1999.... I attended HS in Waianae HS and attended also at Leeward Community College in Pearl City. 2 years in Makaha Valley Plantation and 8 years in Makaha Surfside Cond. Oh I love makaha and Waianae... I miss my friends there. Used to go to cornet, just to hang around because long time ago not much stores in makaha and wainae except longs drug, whoolworth, fun factory, etc. used to buy food at L&L and park at makaha beach. Hawaiians are friendly people I have no problems with them they treat me like a family there.... I have no bad memories in hawaii. all are good memories. I love people of hawaii.... you guys treated me so good over there. to all my friends in nanakuli,makaha, makakilo and kapolei... love you guys.

Loved your video, taught at WHS 16 yrs, had its challenges but great school staff and students laid back.

My dad left the plantation in the 30’s after his dad died. He worked on the plantation as a young boy to keep the house and support his siblings. My grand parents are buried in the Buddhist cemetery giving my family roots in Waianae.

Just found your channel. Have no plans to move to Hawaii but my hub and I drove thru this area for a photo session. It was beautiful and we did notice the high % of natives. I liked we were seeing the locals side of things. Loved Honolulu too but preferred the more local areas. We are from Pensacola too :)

worst traffic on Oahu, except for Honolulu that is 30 miles away but it takes you 1 1/2 hours to cover in the morning. from Waianae. Very local, they were there first and it's the only place they could afford back in the day, now it's pretty expensiive.
