Maharaja barbs (Waikhomia sahyadriensis) are one of the prettiest barbs from the Western Ghats. Compared to the other barbs, they have some unique behavior. Similar to some cichlids the males hold and defend their territories close to the banks of the stream and when bred in captivity, I have noticed that the fry do stay around the parents but there is no parental care as such shown.
Based on a recent paper, the erstwhile Puntius sahyadriensis was placed into a genus of its own (Waikhomia) with two species (sahyadriensis and hira).
