Thank you - I rarely see this aspect of dressmaking addressed. The waist stay absorbs the stress and tension of the wearer in a tight fitting garment, and prevents the seams from accidentally tearing open. Great explanation!

Thank you so much for this! I’m making my wedding reception dress and this was very informative. Is the waist stay only for the back and the sides or can it loop around the front of the bodice too?

Great question! I typically have only seen it done, in the way shown in the video, I presume the “cinching” effect would be more obvious if the front of the bodice pulled as well, it’s just easier to camouflage on the sides and back, if that makes sense.
